Varanasi (From Varuna Ghat to Assi Ghat, hence the name Varanasi) (Hindustani pronunciation: [ʋaːˈraːɳəsi]), also known as Benares,Banaras (Banāras [bəˈnaːrəs]), or Kashi (Kāśī [ˈkaːʃi]), is a North Indian city on the banks of the Ganges in Uttar Pradesh, India 320 kilometres (200 mi) south-east of the state capital, Lucknow and 121 kilometres (75 mi) east of Allahabad. Varanasi is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world. The spiritual capital of India, it is the holiest of the seven sacred cities (Sapta Puri) in Hinduism and Jainism, and played an important role in the development of Buddhism. Varanasi lies along National Highway 2, which connects it to Kolkata, Kanpur, Agra, and Delhi, and is served by Varanasi Junction and Lal Bahadur Shastri International Airport.
Manikarnika Ghat (Hindi: मणिकर्णिका घाट) is one of the ghats in Varansi and is most known for being a place of Hindu cremation.
Manikarnika Ghat is the primary cremation ghat in Varanasi.
It is one of the oldest ghats in Varanasi. It is revered in Hindu religion. When Mata Sati (Aadi shakti mata) sacrificed her life & set her body ablaze after Raja Daksh Prajapati (one of the sons of Lord Brahma) tried to humiliate Lord shiva in a Yagya practiced by Daksh. Lord Shiva took her burning body to the Himalaya. While going to the Himalaya Mata Sati's parts of body started falling on earth. Lord Shiva established Shakti Peeth wherever Sati's body had fallen. At Manikarnika ghat, Mata Sati's Ear's ornament had fallen.
The Manikarnika shrine is an important place of worship for Shaktism sect of Hinduism, It is near to the Kashi Vishwanath Temple. The mythology of Daksha yaga and Sati's self immolation is the mythology behind the origin of Shakti Peethas. The etymology of the place is due to this mythology. It is believed that Sati Devi's Ear Rings has fallen here. Manikarna in Sanskrit means Ear Rings.
Shiva (/ˈʃivə/; Sanskrit: Śiva, meaning "The Auspicious One", also known as Mahadeva ("Great God"), is one of the three major deities of Hinduism. Shiva is in the form of Vishnu and Brahma yet one with them. He is Anant, one who is neither found born nor found dead. He is the Parabrahman within Shaivism, one of the three most influential denominations in contemporary Hinduism. He is one of the five primary forms of God in the Smarta Tradition, and "the Transformer".
At the highest level, Shiva is regarded as limitless, transcendent, unchanging and formless. Shiva also has many benevolent and fearsome forms. In benevolent aspects, he is depicted as an omniscient Yogi who lives an ascetic life on Mount Kailash, as well as a householder with wife Parvati and his two children, Ganesha and Kartikeya, and in fierce aspects, he is often depicted slaying demons. Shiva is also regarded as the patron god of yoga and arts.
The main iconographical attributes of Shiva are the third eye on his forehead, the snake Vasuki around his neck, the adorning crescent moon, the holy river Ganga flowing from his matted hair, the trishula as his weapon and the damaru as his musical instrument. Shiva is usually worshiped in the aniconic form of Lingam. The worship of Shiva is a pan-Hindu tradition, practiced widely across all of India, Nepal and Sri Lanka.
As used in many parts of Northern South Asia, the term ghat refers to a series of steps leading down to a body of water, particularly a holy river. In Bengali-speaking regions, this set of stairs can lead down to something as small as a pond or as large as a major river.
Ghats are the areas in holy riverside cities like Varanasi and Haridwar where stairs exist to reach the Ganges. It is also used for mountainous regions like the Western and Eastern Ghats.
The word Ghat is explained by numerous Dravidian etymons such as Telugu katta and gattu (dam, embankment) Tamil kattu (side of a mountain, dam, ridge, causeway) and Kannada gatta (mountain range). This etymology was proposed by Burrow and endorsed by Mayrhofer and Asko Parpola.
Slavic languages have a word gat that means corduroy road, but it is not clear if it is related to ghat.
The numerous significant ghats along the Ganges are known generally as the 'Varanasi ghats' and the 'ghats of the Ganges'. In Madhya Pradesh in western India there are further significant ghats along the Narmada River. People who live on the steps are also called ghats.
Vishnu (Sanskrit pronunciation: [vɪʂɳu]; Sanskrit: विष्णु, Viṣṇu) is one of the most significant deities in Hinduism. He is the Supreme god Svayam Bhagavan of Vaishnavism (one of the principal denominations of Hinduism). He is also known as Narayana and Hari. As one of the five primary forms of God in the Smarta tradition, he is conceived as "the Preserver or the Protector"
In Hindu sacred texts, Vishnu is usually described as having dark complexion of water-filled clouds and having four arms. He is depicted as a pale blue being, as are his incarnations Rama and Krishna. He holds a padma (lotus flower) in his lower left hand, the Kaumodaki gada (mace) in his lower right hand, the Panchajanya shankha (conch) in his upper left hand and the discus weapon considered to be the most powerful weapon according to Hindu Religion Sudarshana Chakra in his upper right hand.
The traditional explanation of the name Vishnu involves the root viś, meaning "to settle" (cognate with Latin vicus, English -wich "village," Slavic: vas -ves), or also (in the Rigveda) "to enter into, to pervade," glossing the name as "the All-Pervading One".Yaska, an early commentator on the Vedas, in his Nirukta, (etymological interpretation), defines Vishnu as viṣṇur viṣvater vā vyaśnoter vā, "one who enters everywhere". He also writes, atha yad viṣito bhavati tad viṣnurbhavati, "that which is free from fetters and bondages is Vishnu".

Subah-e-Banaras is term commonly used for mornings in Varanasi. For me a tour of Varanasi means a feeling of being elated to see the ghats, which are always full of activity. Right from something like sunrise which can be a substitute for a good beginning to death which is suppose to be the end of it all, the ghats summarise an entire lifetime in front of your eyes. I have tried to explore ‘the sunrise’ in this film and shall leave death for later. Super stoked for this incoming video upload. Pramod Mishra is one of the few people behind Subah Banaras which is organised every morning, for about 2 years straight now on the Assi Ghat. He has been in Varanasi since birth and seen how this ancient city welcomes people not only from India but outside as well. Baba Shiva Das came to Varanasi f...

Filmi meets Classical: To me, this is one of the most haunting Hindi songs ever written. Serving as the transitional piece in L.C. Singh's "Banaras - A Mystic Love Story", the song bridges the gap between the protagonists' childhood and adulthood. Featuring the supple vocals of Shreya Ghoshal and backdropped by the Hindu holy city of Varanasi (Banaras) this song alone is worth the price of admission.

Several civilizations lived and faded away from the face of Earth, but not Banaras. It lives on, concealing something untold for centuries. Perhaps that's why, this puzzling expanse of spiritualism beholds itself as the most important halt in the journey of realization. Author Mark Twain once said, 'Banaras is older ...

Varanasi, located in North India, is one of the most sacred religious cities in all of India. It's a holy place, located next to the Ganges River. Dying in Varanasi is considered sacred, yet at the same time it's a city where people come to celebrate life and to splash in the water of the Ganges. In the Varanasi travel guide I'll go over some of the top things to do in Varanasi. Unlike other huge cities like Delhi (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=huipm50W2bw), which boast an enormous amount of attractions to see and things to do, Varanasi is more about just being there. You don't have to rush from place to place seeing the sights, but it's all about hanging out either along the Ganges River or within the narrow Varanasi lanes and exploring, observing, and just watching. Spending the time j...

Join us as we visit Varanasi city in this travel guide featuring the best things to do in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh, India. Varanasi (also known as Benares, Banaras and/or Kashi) is the spiritual capital of India. As the holiest of seven sacred cities in Hinduism and Jainism you find many people from all over India visiting as well as tourists. In terms of attractions in Varanasi it is a destination worth visiting for the experience rather than a checklist of places to visit. Coming to the various ghats by day and night reveals what Varanasi is all about. You can take a boat ride in the morning for sunrise or later in the evening for sunset but the rest of the time I'd recommend just walking along the ghats and getting lost in the maze of back alleys in the old part of the city. At night be ...

In Part Three of my India travel video guide, I travel to Varanasi, one of the holiest cities in the Hindu religion. In this video I visit the famous ghats, or steps, which lead into the Ganges River, the holy river where visitors and locals come every day to wash themselves and perform religious ceremonies. It is on the banks of the Ganges where thousands of bodies are burned every year. Having your body burned and its ashes spread here is considered to be one of the holiest places in the world to do so in the Hindu religion. After exploring the riverfront, I stop by a local music shop to play tabla with a local sitar player. Though I was a drummer in a past life, the tabla are a completely different style of playing than I was used to -- you've been warned. I finish up by taking a mo...

Traveling India: Varanasi. Known as India's Holy City, Varanasi is situated on the banks of the sacred Ganges river and is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world. During our stay here, we certainly experienced ups and downs. There were serene mornings spent sipping masala chai and gazing into beautiful sunrises over the ganges... combined with intermittent moments of me on the edge of freaking out from the intense noise, traffic and overcrowding. As anywhere in India, beware of getting caught in crowded narrow pathways with men, young boys or bulls, where groping and goring can occur. We found the best masala chai at the rooftop restaurant of Puja guest house, they also have the best 360 degree view of the ganges and city. However we found the rooms at Ganpati Gue...

While the choir sings, Ave Maria
I was singing with all my heart
And I sent a special prayer, up to heaven
That you´ll return to me before I fall apart
While the choir sings, hallelujah
I was singing with all my heart
Darling please come back never leave again
And this will be (this will be) the answer to my prayer
And I´ll wait, here for the answer
That you´ll come back, to me I pray
Oh if you stayed, away another hour
I don´t think I learn to love again
While the choir sing, hallelujah
I was singing with all my heart
Darling please, come back never leave me again
