A philosopher, in a wide sense, is someone who studies philosophy. The term "philosopher" comes from the Ancient Greek φιλόσοφος (philosophos), which means "lover of wisdom". The introduction of the terms "philosopher" and "philosophy" has been ascribed to the Greek thinker Pythagoras.
A philosopher, in the more narrow and common usage, is any intellectual who has made contributions in one or more current fields of philosophy, such as aesthetics, ethics, epistemology, logic, metaphysics, social theory, and political philosophy. A philosopher may also be one who worked in the humanities or other sciences which have since split from philosophy proper over the centuries, such as the arts, history, economics, sociology, psychology, linguistics, anthropology, theology, and politics. They may relate this knowledge to the discussion of philosophical problems.
In the classical sense, a philosopher is someone who lives according to a way of life, whose focus is upon resolving existential questions about the human condition, and not someone who discourses upon theories or comments upon authors. Typically, these particular brands of philosophy are Hellenistic ones and those who most arduously commit themselves to this lifestyle may be considered philosophers.

Daniel Clement Dennett III (born March 28, 1942) is an American philosopher, writer, and cognitive scientist whose research centers on the philosophy of mind, philosophy of science, and philosophy of biology, particularly as those fields related to evolutionary biology and cognitive science.
He is currently the co-director of the Center for Cognitive Studies, the Austin B. Fletcher Professor of Philosophy, and a University Professor at Tufts University. Dennett is an atheist and secularist, a member of the Secular Coalition for America advisory board, as well as an outspoken supporter of the Brights movement. Dennett is referred to as one of the "Four Horsemen of New Atheism", along with Richard Dawkins, Sam Harris, and the late Christopher Hitchens.
Dennett was born on March 28, 1942 in Boston, Massachusetts, the son of Ruth Marjorie (née Leck) and Daniel Clement Dennett, Jr. Dennett spent part of his childhood in Lebanon, where, during World War II, his father was a covert counter-intelligence agent with the Office of Strategic Services posing as a cultural attaché to the American Embassy in Beirut. When he was five, his mother took him back to Massachusetts after his father died in an unexplained plane crash. Dennett says that he was first introduced to the notion of philosophy while attending summer camp at age 11, when a camp counselor said to him, "You know what you are, Daniel? You're a philosopher."

Storming through Arizona's majestic desert landscape in route to California, Rip and his pack of fellow road warriors find themselves stranded when a clutch breaks down. The guarded hospitality of a rancher's wife and her nine-year-old daughter Becky are about to alter LeBeau's odyssey. Filled with a colorful cast of characters, Angel in Chains is an entertaining ride that shows the heart of a seasoned biker is no match for the wisdom of a little girl.

Daniel Dennett, one of the best-known living philosophers and a professor at Tufts University, feels it's time to unmask the philosopher's art and make thought experimentation accessible to a wider audience. How to Think Like a Philosopher, Dennett's six-part video workshop for Big Think Mentor (http://goo.gl/tI6eEV), is a journey into the labyrinth of mind games Dennett and his colleagues, past and present, like to play.

Frederick Copleston and Bryan Magee discuss the work of the 19th century German philosopher Arthur Schopenhauer. Schopenhauer is perhaps most famous for his extreme pessimism. Seeing the world as something horrific and bleak, he urged that we turn against it. As a follower of Immanuel Kant, he took space, time, and causality to be, not things-in-themselves, but categories of the mind through which we interpret and make sense of things. However, in contrast to Kant, Schopenhauer argued that reality must ultimately be one, which is essentially "Will". There are several remarkable things about him, including the fact that he was the only major Western philosopher to draw serious and interesting parallels between Western and Eastern thought, as well as being the first major philosopher to open...
Bertrand Russell (1872 -- 1970) was a British philosopher, logician, mathematician, historian, and social critic. At various points in his life he considered himself a liberal, a socialist, and a pacifist, but he also admitted that he had never been any of these in any profound sense. He was born in Monmouthshire, into one of the most prominent aristocratic families in Britain.

You can count from 1 to 2, from 2 to 3, and so on without end. You know that you're not going to run out of numbers to count, but how do you know? Are numbers mere mental constructs, something invented by us? If so, then why does mathematics work so well and appear to describe the world? On the other hand, if numbers are "out there" in some sense waiting to be discovered by us, then what is their status and how do we get knowledge of them? After all, you can't see or touch numbers. And unlike empirical truths, mathematical truths seem to be a priori, necessary, eternal, universal, and absolutely certain. After discussing a few different positions on the matter, James Franklin discusses his own view with host Alan Saunders in an episode of the Philosopher's Zone from a few years back: http:...

Revolutions are often initiated by idealists, carried out by fanatics and hijacked by scoundrels. These observations by philosopher Thomas Carlyle still ring true about many of the revolutions we've seen in recent years. To what extent can revolutionary goals be achieved through violence, and when is the cost of change too high? Oksana is joined by influential philosopher Slavoj Zizek to analyse these issues. I'm sitting here along the west side
I think of all the ways that I could fuck with you right now
But when I wrap my head around you
You couldn't be more trouble I don't need to lift a finger
Jump in a hole
I dig it for you
You're in a hole
I dig it for you
You live inside the space between life
Your crazy world is so small when you think about it
You can take your shit out on me
Look in the mirror then you see what I see
Jump in the hole
I dig it for you
Jump in the hole
I'll tell you my philosophy
Is new reality
I have gone to hell and back
We suffered through enough
Don't tell me your religion
The price to pay is freedom
I have gone to hell and back
Your ship was always sinking
You like to have your way to know it
What does love got to do when you think about it
Say it's time to stop pretending
Things they come and they go that's the way it is
You like you living
It's just beginning
I'm not the one to blame
I'm not the one
Jump in your hole
I dig it you for you
Jump in the hole
I dig it for you
I'll tell you my philosophy
Is new reality
I have gone to hell and back
We suffered through enough
Don't tell me your religion
The price to pay is freedom
I have gone to hell and back
Your ship was always sinking
You scream it out from the mountaintops
You throw us all under for what
Your action, they speak louder than words
Was it enough to drag us all down into your world
Jump in your hole
I dig it for you
Jump in the hole
I dig it for you
I'll tell you my philosophy
Is new reality
I have gone to hell and back
We suffered through enough
Don't tell me your religion
The price to pay is freedom
