“SAN FRANCISCO — Google on Monday fired a software engineer who wrote an internal memo that questioned the company’s diversity efforts and argued that the low number of women in technical positions was a result of biological differences instead of discrimination.
The memo, called “Google’s Ideological Echo Chamber,” angered many in Silicon Valley because it relied on certain gender stereotypes — like the notion that women are less interested in high-stress jobs because they are more anxious — to rationalize the gender gap in the tech industry. The memo quickly spread outside the company, as other Google employees railed against many of its assumptions.
In a companywide email, Google’s chief executive, Sundar Pichai, said portions of the memo had violated the company’s code of conduct and crossed the line “by advancing harmful gender stereotypes in our workplace.”
The memo put the company in a bind. On one hand, Google has long promoted a culture of openness, with employees allowed to question senior executives and even mock its strategy in internal forums. However, Google, like many other technology firms, is dealing with criticism that it has not done enough to hire and promote women and minorities.”

A student was almost kicked out of a meeting after she violated a 'safe space' by raising her arm at Edinburgh University.
Imogen Wilson wanted to make a point at Thursday's student council session when she was told off by officials.
The vice-president for academic affairs at the university's Student Association was accused of failing disabled students by not responding to an open letter.
She immediately raised her arm to disagree but was made the subject of a 'ludicrous' complaint and told not to make the gesture again.
Imogen was also warned for shaking her head during the meeting as it again breached the 'safe space' which is part of the university's Student Association rules.
She told The Huffington Post: '...I raised my arms in disagreement, as we had contacted the writers of the letter and tried hard to organise a meeting. It was for that reason that a safe space complaint was made.'
Student Association policy says that council members should be respectful and considerate.
Section 6c of the safe space policy is defined as: 'Refraining from hand gestures which denote disagreement or in any other way indicating disagreement with a point or points being made. Disagreements should only be evident through the normal course of debate.'
A vote took place to decide whether Imogen should be removed from the meeting after she was accused of breaking the rules.
The vote was in her favour: with 18 people for removal and 33 supporting her staying.
Imogen added: 'I completely understand the importance of our safe space policy, and will defend it to the ground, but I did not think that was fair, and had it gone further I would have either left or argued against it.'
One student, a fourth-year, who wished to remain anonymous, said the complaint was 'ludicrous' and was an 'abuse of the entire intent of safe space'.
'We were having one of the most emotionally tense councils of the year, with the vote on the BDS [The Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions] movement and people speaking who live in Palestine or are Israeli on both sides of the issue.
'There was ample risk of there being an actual safe space issue taking place-an anti-semitic or Islamophobic comment for instance-but the whole debate was actually remarkably civil despite how emotional it was.'
First-year Edinburgh student Charlie Peters tweeted against the safe space policy and set up a petition against it. By yesterday afternoon it had 1,000 signatures.
'Safe spaces now censor "inappropriate hand gestures" - my university is becoming pathetic,' he told his Twitter followers.

These State Troopers violated this mans 4th Amendment rights! The Trooper reached in through the locked car door to steal a police decal. That is right, steal! The State Police have no right to force anyone to open their window or order someone out of the car for no reason. The driver held up the Fair DUI Flyer and showed his drivers licence to the trooper. In NY that is not grounds to pull someone out of the car. The troopers probably cause is the driver being "deceitful". That is what NY state police think of people exercising their rights. Good job to the driver for standing up for himself and being prepared. Know your rights and don't fear the police. Expose their corrupt ways! Always film the police, even if it is for someone else.

In today's constantly connected world, finding solitude has become a lost art. Constantly being on "on" mode doesn't give your brain a chance to rest and replenish itself. Being by yourself with no distractions gives you the chance to clear your mind, focus, and think more clearly. It's an opportunity to revitalize your mind and body at the same time.
Day to day responsibilities and commitments can make your to-do list seem as if it has no end. It's hard to think of effective solutions to problems when you're distracted by incoming information.By spending time with yourself and gaining a better understanding of who you are and what you desire in life, you're more likely to make better choices about who you want to be around. You also may come to appreciate your relationships more after you've spent some time alone.
It can be a challenge to find time alone in a world that seems to never sleep. Any time that you can spend alone with yourself to reboot, meditate, focus, relax, create, produce, and/or think deeply is better than no time.Train yourself consciously to go back to the school of solitude often.
For solitude to be beneficial, certain preconditions must be met. Kenneth Rubin, a developmental psychologist at the University of Maryland, calls them the “ifs.” Solitude can be productive only: if it is voluntary, if one can regulate one’s emotions “effectively,” if one can join a social group when desired, and if one can maintain positive relationships outside of it.We don’t know what the ideal amount is, for instance, or even if there is one. Most likely, such measures are different for everybody.
Some Ways to Solitude:
Seek Alone Time at Work:
When people go to a café to do focused work, they are often trying to inhibit the social distractions they face in their workplace.working in an environment with a moderate level of ambient background noise can enhance performance on creative tasks. Many people enjoy the hum of activity in cafés or airports, where they can work, read, or relax without disruption.
Purposeful Solitude:
Isolation is largely a matter of circumstance and state of mind: Your physical location, your habits, and your attitudes can all conspire to make you feel isolated from a group. But solitude is intentional; you make a conscious choice to separate from a group in order to concentrate, recharge, express emotion, or engage in personal activities. Some people may choose a closed space where they have visual and acoustical privacy if they need respite or to focus intently on a project. Others may choose to eat lunch in the farthest empty corner of a cafeteria. Stepping outside to sit in a quiet courtyard and taking a short walk are other ways people seek alone time.
Signaling:
People can also signal a desire for privacy by how they orient themselves in a room: Facing others encourages interaction; tucking behind a screen or a large plant says “I’m trying to be alone.”
Employees can find a host of props or devices to help them establish privacy boundaries with their coworkers. But even the most sophisticated gadget won’t work unless it’s backed up by a culture that respects the individual’s need for privacy. Leaders should make it clear that employees must respect privacy signals in open spaces and support individuals’ efforts to control their information and stimulation.
Intentional shielding:
People talk about feeling “violated” when they think they’re being watched or eavesdropped on. They use a variety of shielding tactics to protect themselves. We often see people go to an enclosed location to take a call, or walk in public areas where they are less likely to be overheard. Many people avoid working in spaces where they can’t see coworkers approaching

At a January 11, 2010 public meeting of the privately-funded, California state sponsored Marine Life Protection Act "Initiative," a journalist covering the meeting was told to stop unobtrusively recording the public policy meeting, in violation of California's Bagley-Keene Open Meetings laws.
Willful violation of these laws by facilitators of state meetings is a misdemeanor.
The MLPAI and its so-called "I-Team" repeatedly violated Bagley-Keene and other laws, which ultimately resulted in the unlawful arrest of a reporter at a MLPAI public meeting.
The MLPAI, it's privately funded facilitators, and the California Dept. of Fish and Game are currently facing litigation for CIvil Rights and Bagley-Keene Open Meetings Act violations.

Simon Storey wanted to buy an affordable home so he bought the smallest and cheapest thing on the market. It was just 350 square feet and Storey wanted to fit both his home and office there so he requested special planning permission to double the height.
He has now squeezed 960 square feet on his 780 square foot lot (garage included) and has one of Los Angeles' skinniest homes. Storey calls it the Eel's Nest in reference to the super narrow lots in Japan (between 5 and 15 feet).
Storey kept the design a simple stack of boxes that reach the property line on three sides. Inside, he left it as open as possible, using small tricks to maximize space, like a sunken kitchen (that helps to define spaces) and floating stairs (that double as a light well).
Most of the furniture was hand-crafted by Storey, including wooden speakers. He has plans to outfit his dining table with wheels so he can make space for dinner parties by wheeling it out to his small backyard deck.

Safe Space (South Park)
"Safe Space" is the fifth episode of the nineteenth season and the 262nd overall episode of the animated television series South Park, written and directed by series co-creator Trey Parker. The episode premiered on Comedy Central on October 21, 2015. It parodies the idea of safe spaces while also continuing the season-long lampoon on political correctness.
Plot
Cartman is in PC Principal's office crying after receiving negative comments for his appearance in a picture he posted online of himself wearing only underwear and lifting weights. Principal suggests having another student filter out negative comments on Cartman's social media accounts and printing out only the positive comments to Cartman. Cartman agrees and Principal asks Kyle, Wendy, and Butters to filter out the negative comments. Kyle and Wendy get two weeks of detention when they refuse, but Butters, fearful of being grounded by his parents, agrees.
Meanwhile, at Whole Foods Market, Randy is pressured by a cashier to give additional money for poor starving children while paying for groceries. The cashier continues increasingly pressuring him to make donations in his subsequent visits until he finally makes a donation, but is then embarrassed again by the cashier for only giving one dollar to charity.

Ana Kasparian
Anahit Misak Kasparian (Armenian: Անահիտ Միսաք Գասպարեան, pronounced [ɑnɑˈhid miˈsɑkʰ kʰɑsbɑˈɾjɑn]; born July 7 1986) is an American political pundit and the co-host and producer for the online news show The Young Turks. Kasparian began working as a fill-in producer for The Young Turks in 2007, and is now co-host of the main show and host of The Point on the TYT Network. She also appeared on the TV version of the show that aired on Current TV.
Biography
Born in Los Angeles, California, Kasparian is the daughter of Armenian immigrant parents and was raised in the Reseda community of the San Fernando Valley. Kasparian graduated from Valley Alternative Magnet High School of Van Nuys in 2004 and California State University, Northridge (CSUN) in 2007 with a Bachelor of Arts, Journalism (BAJ).
Kasparian was an assistant producer with CBS Radio news stations in Los Angeles, first with KFWB and then KNX. She has also worked with AOL News, YouTube, TidalTv and On Point. After becoming a fill-in host in April 2007, Kasparian became the producer and co-host with Cenk Uygur of the progressive talk radio on Sirius XM Satellite Radio and internet show/TV show The Young Turks. Kasparian says that young people are interested in news, but "they see network anchors as simply folks who read tele-prompters." She co-hosted TYT University, a show focused on issues faced by university students for some years, and now hosts another TYT Network show, The Point. Kasparian is an agnostic atheist.

Cenk Uygur
Cenk Kadir Uygur (/ˈdʒɛŋk ˈjuːɡər/, Turkish pronunciation: [ˈdʒɛɲc ˈujɡur]; born March 21, 1970) is an American columnist, political commentator and activist. Uygur is the main host and co-founder of the American liberal/progressive political and social internet commentary program, The Young Turks (TYT) and the co-founder of the associated TYT Network. He worked as an attorney in Washington, D.C. and New York before beginning his career as a political commentator. As a young man, Uygur espoused socially conservative views, criticizing feminism, abortion, and affirmative action. He is now a progressive.
In addition to hosting TYT, Uygur appeared on MSNBC as a political commentator in 2010, later hosting a weeknight commentary show on the channel for nearly six months until being replaced by Al Sharpton. Shortly after leaving MSNBC, Uygur secured a show on Current TV that aired from December 5, 2011 to August 15, 2013. Uygur was from 2012 to 2013 the chief news officer of Current TV, succeeding Keith Olbermann following his departure from the cable television network until Current was acquired by Al Jazeera Media Network.

The memo, called “Google’s Ideological Echo Chamber,” angered many in Silicon Valley because it relied on certain gender stereotypes — like the notion that women are less interested in high-stress jobs because they are more anxious — to rationalize the gender gap in the tech industry. The memo quickly spread outside the company, as other Google employees railed against many of its assumptions. In a companywide email, Google’s chief executive, Sundar Pichai, said portions of the memo had violated the company’s code of conduct and crossed the line “by advancing harmful gender stereotypes in our workplace.” The memo put the company in a bind. A student was almost kicked out of a meeting after she violated a 'safe space' by raising her arm at Edinburgh University. Imogen Wilson wanted to make a point at Thursday's student council session when she was told off by officials. The vice-president for academic affairs at the university's Student Association was accused of failing disabled students by not responding to an open letter. She immediately raised her arm to disagree but was made the subject of a 'ludicrous' complaint and told not to make the gesture again. Imogen was also warned for shaking her head during the meeting as it again breached the 'safe space' which is part of the university's Student Association rules. She told The Huffington Post: '...I raised my arms in disagreement, as we had contacted the writers of the letter and tried hard to organise a meeting. It was for that reason that a safe space complaint was made.' Student Association policy says that council members should be respectful and considerate. Section 6c of the safe space policy is defined as: 'Refraining from hand gestures which denote disagreement or in any other way indicating disagreement with a point or points being made. Disagreements should only be evident through the normal course of debate.' A vote took place to decide whether Imogen should be removed from the meeting after she was accused of breaking the rules. The vote was in her favour: with 18 people for removal and 33 supporting her staying. Imogen added: 'I completely understand the importance of our safe space policy, and will defend it to the ground, but I did not think that was fair, and had it gone further I would have either left or argued against it.' One student, a fourth-year, who wished to remain anonymous, said the complaint was 'ludicrous' and was an 'abuse of the entire intent of safe space'. 'We were having one of the most emotionally tense councils of the year, with the vote on the BDS [The Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions] movement and people speaking who live in Palestine or are Israeli on both sides of the issue. 'There was ample risk of there being an actual safe space issue taking place-an anti-semitic or Islamophobic comment for instance-but the whole debate was actually remarkably civil despite how emotional it was.' First-year Edinburgh student Charlie Peters tweeted against the safe space policy and set up a petition against it. By yesterday afternoon it had 1,000 signatures. 'Safe spaces now censor "inappropriate hand gestures" - my university is becoming pathetic,' he told his Twitter followers. -

Day to day responsibilities and commitments can make your to-do list seem as if it has no end. It's hard to think of effective solutions to problems when you're distracted by incoming information.By spending time with yourself and gaining a better understanding of who you are and what you desire in life, you're more likely to make better choices about who you want to be around. You also may come to appreciate your relationships more after you've spent some time alone. It can be a challenge to find time alone in a world that seems to never sleep. Any time that you can spend alone with yourself to reboot, meditate, focus, relax, create, produce, and/or think deeply is better than no time.Train yourself consciously to go back to the school of solitude often. For solitude to be beneficial, certain preconditions must be met. Kenneth Rubin, a developmental psychologist at the University of Maryland, calls them the “ifs.” Solitude can be productive only: if it is voluntary, if one can regulate one’s emotions “effectively,” if one can join a social group when desired, and if one can maintain positive relationships outside of it.We don’t know what the ideal amount is, for instance, or even if there is one. Most likely, such measures are different for everybody. Some Ways to Solitude: Seek Alone Time at Work: When people go to a café to do focused work, they are often trying to inhibit the social distractions they face in their workplace.working in an environment with a moderate level of ambient background noise can enhance performance on creative tasks. Many people enjoy the hum of activity in cafés or airports, where they can work, read, or relax without disruption. Purposeful Solitude: Isolation is largely a matter of circumstance and state of mind: Your physical location, your habits, and your attitudes can all conspire to make you feel isolated from a group. But solitude is intentional; you make a conscious choice to separate from a group in order to concentrate, recharge, express emotion, or engage in personal activities. Some people may choose a closed space where they have visual and acoustical privacy if they need respite or to focus intently on a project. Others may choose to eat lunch in the farthest empty corner of a cafeteria. Stepping outside to sit in a quiet courtyard and taking a short walk are other ways people seek alone time. Signaling: People can also signal a desire for privacy by how they orient themselves in a room: Facing others encourages interaction; tucking behind a screen or a large plant says “I’m trying to be alone.” Employees can find a host of props or devices to help them establish privacy boundaries with their coworkers. But even the most sophisticated gadget won’t work unless it’s backed up by a culture that respects the individual’s need for privacy. Leaders should make it clear that employees must respect privacy signals in open spaces and support individuals’ efforts to control their information and stimulation. Intentional shielding: People talk about feeling “violated” when they think they’re being watched or eavesdropped on. They use a variety of shielding tactics to protect themselves. We often see people go to an enclosed location to take a call, or walk in public areas where they are less likely to be overheard. Simon Storey wanted to buy an affordable home so he bought the smallest and cheapest thing on the market. It was just 350 square feet and Storey wanted to fit both his home and office there so he requested special planning permission to double the height. He has now squeezed 960 square feet on his 780 square foot lot (garage included) and has one of Los Angeles' skinniest homes. Storey calls it the Eel's Nest in reference to the super narrow lots in Japan (between 5 and 15 feet). Storey kept the design a simple stack of boxes that reach the property line on three sides. Inside, he left it as open as possible, using small tricks to maximize space, like a sunken kitchen (that helps to define spaces) and floating stairs (that double as a light well). Most of the furniture was hand-crafted by Storey, including wooden speakers. He has plans to outfit his dining table with wheels so he can make space for dinner parties by wheeling it out to his small backyard deck. CM Manohar Parrikar has said that the government has decided to ban alcohol consumption in public places. Its notification will be issued by next month. Along with this, a special campaign has been initiated by the police to prevent the consumption of alcohol in public places in May, under which some people who violated the rules were also arrested. CM Parrikar said that in order to check the use of alcohol in public places, the meeting will be held in the next 15 days with the administration officials. Alcohol drinkers will also be prohibited publicly around liquor shops and action will also be taken on liquor vendors who allow them to do so. check our BLOG on http://internationalworkshopmcnaga.wordpress.com/ ABSTRACT El Raval is situated to the west of the Gothic Quarter and was once a vital industrial zone with densely crammed blocks of buildings for the laborers. In the 19th century Barcelona expanded and El Raval lost its significance as an industrial center. This led the area to be neglected by the government, becoming a hub for petty crimes, prostitution and drugs. The socialist government in the 1970s strove to improve the social condition by demolishing old unexploited buildings and replacing the old urban fabric with small squares made of concrete, which provide the much needed open spaces yet are easy to maintain. In the 1980s, before the Olympic games, efforts were increased thus public spaces such as Plaçadels Angels and Rambla del Raval axis were developed. The new efforts generated tourism and new developments but also triggered a wave of immigrants to reside in the area, creating an agglomeration of informal settlements. With a population of approximately 37500, it is said that 47% of the inhabitants are immigrants. However the heterogeneity of the El Ravalis not manifested in the public spaces, different ethnic groups do not interact with one another since public spaces are "masculanized" with high rates of pick pocketing and violence that do not inspire children to engage in recreational activities. Furthermore, public spaces and streets become playgrounds for different gangs where passersby are violated. Considering the different social, physical and economic patterns that characterize El Raval, we strove to design an element that would motivate children from different ethnicities to interact and bond while at the same time provide a certain extent of safety for pedestrians during nighttime through the LED lighting and spread awareness of the significant number of children living in the streets. The swings are lit at night, through optical fibers that compose them. The swings will be hung in narrow streets between clustered informal settlements where the street may also act as a public space, where homeless children might normally dwell for a night, and where prostitution is also practiced. The swings are there as a constant reminder of the presence of the children. This targets adults to be conscience of the presence of children in neglected spaces who are constantly exposed to drugs and prostitution. The goal is to re-awaken the latent conscience and the responsibility of those adults who happen to be role models to the children. Our aim is to restore the social conscience. -

NMMC Chief Tukaram Mundhe has raised the red flag over the Maharashtra government’s proposed amnesty scheme for pre-December 2015 unauthorized structures across the state. Mundhe, in a letter addressed to the principal secretary (urban development department) on March 10, said that the scheme to regularize illegal structures could have disastrous consequences, especially in a planned township like Navi Mumbai. The Bombay high court on Thursday referred to the letter and Mundhe’s opposition to the scheme while hearing a PIL on authorized structures in Digha in Navi Mumbai. The state government has sought the court’s permission to implement the scheme that will protect unauthorized structures prior to December 31, 2015, and will allot them to apply for regularization of the buildings on pay ment of a penalty . The high court is likely to de cide on the sta te’s application on Friday. In the letter, In the letter, Mundhe has referred to the fact that a major chunk of illegal buildings have come up on land owned by the government, Cidco and MIDC violating rules for marginal open space, parking and floor space index norms. Even on gaothan lands, unauthorized structures have come up in a haphazard manner and the extent of violation is around 200%. “Such development has been carried out on very narrow streets that may lead to disaster in the event of any natural or manmade calamity.Even NMMC is presently unable to provide fire, health and ambulance services in these areas,“ wrote Mundhe. The civic chief also raised concerns over the safety of these buildings that have been constructed without any quality checks or under the supervision of a licensed architect or structural engineer. “Unauthorized construction on government land and plots reserved for public amenities such as gardens, playgrounds, open space, roads, schools, hospitals… If we regularise such unauthorised construction then this will lead to reduction in amenities area which is not acceptable,“ he added. -

I just attended a World Hinduism Conference in Goa, India and was shocked at the amount of atrocities happening against Hindus around the world. The war against spirituality and enlightenment in this Conscious Shift time period is stronger than ever and targeting Hinduism, as it is the forefront of conscious evolution and always has been. For thousands of years, Hinduism has existed peacefully and coexisted beautifully alongside diverse communities and other religions. Hinduism literally has no conversion and would never think in that mindset. It is based in the core principles of ahimsa (nonviolence) and advaitha (oneness). Hindu lifestyle is only working toward raising the consciousness of the planet and creating a completely nonviolent world. A huge shift has happened in the country with the integration of outside religions, who are not based in this same context. Violence against Hindus and Hinduism sadly has a long and aggressive history in India. The Islamic invasion did its best effort to destroy the ancient Vedic culture and lifestyle through murder, rape, and pillaging. Today it continues to inflict violence through intense conversion practices. Christianity also has a long and destructive history in India. From St. Thomas to de Gama, many nations have sent (and continue to send) missionaries who are truly parasites to the authentic culture and spiritual heritage of India. Hindus in other countries are also being exploited and ravaged. In places like Sri Lanka and Bangladesh, genocides and mass exoduses of Hindus are happening. Temples are being destroyed, Hindu families attacked in their own homes, and even being killed for their peaceful beliefs. From what I have learned and seen, so much of violence and religious conflict in India and abroad ties back to conversion. The very idea of religious conversion is innately violent and from the space of duality. It is violating peoples, an ancient culture, and a country itself. Conversion is exploiting the openness and/or vulnerability of Hindus worldwide. Thank you all for your listening and I hope this atrocities are as unacceptable to you as they are to me. Whether you are Hindu or not, this is intolerable. This is human rights being violated. PS. Ironically, while I was at this conference in Goa, multiple attacks happened at some of Swamiji's other ashrams in India. The swamis (monks) were brutally attacked and the properties destroyed. A student was almost kicked out of a meeting after she violated a 'safe space' by raising her arm at Edinburgh University. Imogen Wilson wanted to make a point at Thursday's student council session when she was told off by officials. The vice-president for academic affairs at the university's Student Association was accused of failing disabled students by not responding to an open letter. These State Troopers violated this mans 4th Amendment rights! The Trooper reached in through the locked car door to steal a police decal. That is right, steal! The State Police have no right to force anyone to open their window or order someone out of the car for no reason. The driver held up the Fair DUI Flyer and showed his drivers licence to the trooper. Skinny house in LA: affordable, minimal, modern home/office
Simon Storey wanted to buy an affordable home so he bought the smallest and cheapest thing on the market. It was just 350 square feet and Storey wanted to fit both his home and office there so he requested special planning permission to double the height. He has now squeezed 960 square feet on his 780 square foot lot (garage included) and has one of Los Angeles' skinniest homes. “SAN FRANCISCO — Google on Monday fired a software engineer who wrote an internal memo that questioned the company’s diversity efforts and argued that the low number of women in technical positions was a result of biological differences instead of discrimination.
The memo, called “Google’s Ideological Echo Chamber,” angered many in Silicon Valley because it relied on certain gender stereotypes — like the notion that women are less interested in high-stress jobs because they are more anxious — to rationalize the gender gap in the tech industry. The memo quickly spread outside the company, as other Google employees railed against many of its assumptions.
In a companywide email, Google’s chief executive, Sundar Pichai, said portions of the memo had violated the company’s code of conduct and crossed the line “by advancing harmful gender stereotypes in our workplace.”

A student was almost kicked out of a meeting after she violated a 'safe space' by raising her arm at Edinburgh University.
Imogen Wilson wanted to make a point at Thursday's student council session when she was told off by officials.
The vice-president for academic affairs at the university's Student Association was accused of failing disabled students by not responding to an open letter.
She immediately raised her arm to disagree but was made the subject of a 'ludicrous' complaint and told not to make the gesture again.
Imogen was also warned for shaking her head during the meeting as it again breached the 'safe space' which is part of the university's Student Association rules.
She told The Huffington Post: '...I raised my arms in disagreement, as we had contacted the writers of the letter and tried hard to organise a meeting. It was for that reason that a safe space complaint was made.'
Student Association policy says that council members should be respectful and considerate.
Section 6c of the safe space policy is defined as: 'Refraining from hand gestures which denote disagreement or in any other way indicating disagreement with a point or points being made. Disagreements should only be evident through the normal course of debate.'
A vote took place to decide whether Imogen should be removed from the meeting after she was accused of breaking the rules.
The vote was in her favour: with 18 people for removal and 33 supporting her staying.
Imogen added: 'I completely understand the importance of our safe space policy, and will defend it to the ground, but I did not think that was fair, and had it gone further I would have either left or argued against it.'
One student, a fourth-year, who wished to remain anonymous, said the complaint was 'ludicrous' and was an 'abuse of the entire intent of safe space'.
'We were having one of the most emotionally tense councils of the year, with the vote on the BDS [The Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions] movement and people speaking who live in Palestine or are Israeli on both sides of the issue.
'There was ample risk of there being an actual safe space issue taking place-an anti-semitic or Islamophobic comment for instance-but the whole debate was actually remarkably civil despite how emotional it was.'
First-year Edinburgh student Charlie Peters tweeted against the safe space policy and set up a petition against it. By yesterday afternoon it had 1,000 signatures.
'Safe spaces now censor "inappropriate hand gestures" - my university is becoming pathetic,' he told his Twitter followers.

In NY that is not grounds to pull someone out of the car. The troopers probably cause is the driver being "deceitful". That is what NY state police think of people exercising their rights. Good job to the driver for standing up for himself and being prepared. Know your rights and don't fear the police. Expose their corrupt ways! Always film the police, even if it is for someone else.

In today's constantly connected world, finding solitude has become a lost art. Constantly being on "on" mode doesn't give your brain a chance to rest and replenish itself. Being by yourself with no distractions gives you the chance to clear your mind, focus, and think more clearly. It's an opportunity to revitalize your mind and body at the same time.
Day to day responsibilities and commitments can make your to-do list seem as if it has no end. It's hard to think of effective solutions to problems when you're distracted by incoming information.By spending time with yourself and gaining a better understanding of who you are and what you desire in life, you're more likely to make better choices about who you want to be around. You also may come to appreciate your relationships more after you've spent some time alone.
It can be a challenge to find time alone in a world that seems to never sleep. Any time that you can spend alone with yourself to reboot, meditate, focus, relax, create, produce, and/or think deeply is better than no time.Train yourself consciously to go back to the school of solitude often.
For solitude to be beneficial, certain preconditions must be met. Kenneth Rubin, a developmental psychologist at the University of Maryland, calls them the “ifs.” Solitude can be productive only: if it is voluntary, if one can regulate one’s emotions “effectively,” if one can join a social group when desired, and if one can maintain positive relationships outside of it.We don’t know what the ideal amount is, for instance, or even if there is one. Most likely, such measures are different for everybody.
Some Ways to Solitude:
Seek Alone Time at Work:
When people go to a café to do focused work, they are often trying to inhibit the social distractions they face in their workplace.working in an environment with a moderate level of ambient background noise can enhance performance on creative tasks. Many people enjoy the hum of activity in cafés or airports, where they can work, read, or relax without disruption.
Purposeful Solitude:
Isolation is largely a matter of circumstance and state of mind: Your physical location, your habits, and your attitudes can all conspire to make you feel isolated from a group. But solitude is intentional; you make a conscious choice to separate from a group in order to concentrate, recharge, express emotion, or engage in personal activities. Some people may choose a closed space where they have visual and acoustical privacy if they need respite or to focus intently on a project. Others may choose to eat lunch in the farthest empty corner of a cafeteria. Stepping outside to sit in a quiet courtyard and taking a short walk are other ways people seek alone time.
Signaling:
People can also signal a desire for privacy by how they orient themselves in a room: Facing others encourages interaction; tucking behind a screen or a large plant says “I’m trying to be alone.”
Employees can find a host of props or devices to help them establish privacy boundaries with their coworkers. But even the most sophisticated gadget won’t work unless it’s backed up by a culture that respects the individual’s need for privacy. Leaders should make it clear that employees must respect privacy signals in open spaces and support individuals’ efforts to control their information and stimulation.

Simon Storey wanted to buy an affordable home so he bought the smallest and cheapest thing on the market. It was just 350 square feet and Storey wanted to fit both his home and office there so he requested special planning permission to double the height.
He has now squeezed 960 square feet on his 780 square foot lot (garage included) and has one of Los Angeles' skinniest homes. Storey calls it the Eel's Nest in reference to the super narrow lots in Japan (between 5 and 15 feet).
Storey kept the design a simple stack of boxes that reach the property line on three sides. Inside, he left it as open as possible, using small tricks to maximize space, like a sunken kitchen (that helps to define spaces) and floating stairs (that double as a light well).
Most of the furniture was hand-crafted by Storey, including wooden speakers. He has plans to outfit his dining table with wheels so he can make space for dinner parties by wheeling it out to his small backyard deck.

They are rules of conduct built out of a mix of beliefs, opinions, attitudes, past experiences and social learning. Personal boundaries operate in two directions, affecting both the incoming and outgoing interactions between people. Personal boundaries help to define an individual by outlining likes and dislikes and what is right for them personally or wrong for them personally. Defining these things helps us to know how we will and wont allow ourselves to be treated by others.
The biggest issue isn't that other people violate our boundaries, it's that we violate our own boundaries. By letting someone violate our boundaries, we violate our own boundaries. This is self-betrayal. Your boundaries are defined by your feelings. Your feelings will always tell you whether a boundary of yours has been violated, no matter what kind of boundary it is. In this episode, Teal explains how boundaries are not a contradiction to oneness and teaches us how to develop healthy boundaries.

In Goa, there is a ban on drinking alcohol in public places soon. CM Manohar Parrikar has said that the government has decided to ban alcohol consumption in public places. Its notification will be issued by next month. Today even though Goa is talking about ban on drinking alcohol, but Goa's identity was due to the hippies coming here and their open-ended Rev Parties. Mastmaula, stroller and unfriendly hippie tourists were quite open.
Let us state that the Goa government amended the Excise Duty Act, 1964. Under this, some places in the state were made 'No alcohol consumption' zone. There was a provision to impose penalties on alcohol consumption at these places marked by the government as 'No alcohol consumption zone'. Along with this, a special campaign has been initiated by the police to prevent the consumption of alcohol in public places in May, under which some people who violated the rules were also arrested. CM Parrikar said that in order to check the use of alcohol in public places, the meeting will be held in the next 15 days with the administration officials. Alcohol drinkers will also be prohibited publicly around liquor shops and action will also be taken on liquor vendors who allow them to do so. Parrikar also said that it has been seen that people drink alcohol on the side of the road and break their bottles there, due to which the common people have trouble.

But… is it? Is the internet a public place? I imagine, and talk about, the internet as a set of locations traveled between. Heck you kinda have to: the thing at the top of your browser is called a LOCATION BAR, you put in ADDRESSES, you go to SITES. But, if the internet is a place it exhibits a PLACEHOOD unlike physical places. “Going” to those internet places is unlike “going” to physical ones–we can be in more than one internet place at once, move between them effortlessly and attach or detach a persistent identity. So even if the internet FEELS like a public place, is it really? And should we expect the same free speech privileges on the internet as we do in real life public spaces? ABSTRACT
El Raval is situated to the west of the Gothic Quarter and was once a vital industrial zone with densely crammed blocks of buildings for the laborers. In the 19th century Barcelona expanded and El Raval lost its significance as an industrial center. This led the area to be neglected by the government, becoming a hub for petty crimes, prostitution and drugs. The socialist government in the 1970s strove to improve the social condition by demolishing old unexploited buildings and replacing the old urban fabric with small squares made of concrete, which provide the much needed open spaces yet are easy to maintain. In the 1980s, before the Olympic games, efforts were increased thus public spaces such as Plaçadels Angels and Rambla del Raval axis were developed. The new efforts generated tourism and new developments but also triggered a wave of immigrants to reside in the area, creating an agglomeration of informal settlements. With a population of approximately 37500, it is said that 47% of the inhabitants are immigrants. ABSTRACT
El Raval is situated to the west of the Gothic Quarter and was once a vital industrial zone with densely crammed blocks of buildings for the laborers. In the 19th century Barcelona expanded and El Raval lost its significance as an industrial center. This led the area to be neglected by the government, becoming a hub for petty crimes, prostitution and drugs. The socialist government in the 1970s strove to improve the social condition by demolishing old unexploited buildings and replacing the old urban fabric with small squares made of concrete, which provide the much needed open spaces yet are easy to maintain. In the 1980s, before the Olympic games, efforts were increased thus public spaces such as Plaçadels Angels and Rambla del Raval axis were developed. The new efforts generated tourism and new developments but also triggered a wave of immigrants to reside in the area, creating an agglomeration of informal settlements. With a population of approximately 37500, it is said that 47% of the inhabitants are immigrants. NMMC Chief Tukaram Mundhe has raised the red flag over the Maharashtra government’s proposed amnesty scheme for pre-December 2015 unauthorized structures across the state.
Mundhe, in a letter addressed to the principal secretary (urban development department) on March 10, said that the scheme to regularize illegal structures could have disastrous consequences, especially in a planned township like Navi Mumbai. The Bombay high court on Thursday referred to the letter and Mundhe’s opposition to the scheme while hearing a PIL on authorized structures in Digha in Navi Mumbai. The state government has sought the court’s permission to implement the scheme that will protect unauthorized structures prior to December 31, 2015, and will allot them to apply for regularization of the buildings on pay ment of a penalty . The high court is likely to de cide on the sta te’s application on Friday.
In the letter, In the letter, Mundhe has referred to the fact that a major chunk of illegal buildings have come up on land owned by the government, Cidco and MIDC violating rules for marginal open space, parking and floor space index norms. Even on gaothan lands, unauthorized structures have come up in a haphazard manner and the extent of violation is around 200%. “Such development has been carried out on very narrow streets that may lead to disaster in the event of any natural or manmade calamity.Even NMMC is presently unable to provide fire, health and ambulance services in these areas,“ wrote Mundhe.
The civic chief also raised concerns over the safety of these buildings that have been constructed without any quality checks or under the supervision of a licensed architect or structural engineer. “Unauthorized construction on government land and plots reserved for public amenities such as gardens, playgrounds, open space, roads, schools, hospitals… If we regularise such unauthorised construction then this will lead to reduction in amenities area which is not acceptable,“ he added.

I just attended a World Hinduism Conference in Goa, India and was shocked at the amount of atrocities happening against Hindus around the world. The war against spirituality and enlightenment in this Conscious Shift time period is stronger than ever and targeting Hinduism, as it is the forefront of conscious evolution and always has been.
For thousands of years, Hinduism has existed peacefully and coexisted beautifully alongside diverse communities and other religions. Hinduism literally has no conversion and would never think in that mindset. It is based in the core principles of ahimsa (nonviolence) and advaitha (oneness). Hindu lifestyle is only working toward raising the consciousness of the planet and creating a completely nonviolent world. A huge shift has happened in the country with the integration of outside religions, who are not based in this same context.
Violence against Hindus and Hinduism sadly has a long and aggressive history in India. The Islamic invasion did its best effort to destroy the ancient Vedic culture and lifestyle through murder, rape, and pillaging. Today it continues to inflict violence through intense conversion practices.
Christianity also has a long and destructive history in India. From St. Thomas to de Gama, many nations have sent (and continue to send) missionaries who are truly parasites to the authentic culture and spiritual heritage of India.
Hindus in other countries are also being exploited and ravaged. In places like Sri Lanka and Bangladesh, genocides and mass exoduses of Hindus are happening. Temples are being destroyed, Hindu families attacked in their own homes, and even being killed for their peaceful beliefs.
From what I have learned and seen, so much of violence and religious conflict in India and abroad ties back to conversion. The very idea of religious conversion is innately violent and from the space of duality. It is violating peoples, an ancient culture, and a country itself. Conversion is exploiting the openness and/or vulnerability of Hindus worldwide.
Thank you all for your listening and I hope this atrocities are as unacceptable to you as they are to me. Whether you are Hindu or not, this is intolerable. This is human rights being violated.
PS. Ironically, while I was at this conference in Goa, multiple attacks happened at some of Swamiji's other ashrams in India. The swamis (monks) were brutally attacked and the properties destroyed. It is heartbreaking and sickening to see how real this anti-Hindu hatred is. See here:

Boundaries are guidelines for how someone relates the self to the rest of the world. They are rules of conduct built out of a mix of beliefs, opinions, attitudes, past experiences and social learning. Personal boundaries operate in two directions, affecting both the incoming and outgoing interactions between people. Personal boundaries help to define an individual by outlining likes and dislikes and what is right for them personally or wrong for them personally. Defining these things helps us to know how we will and wont allow ourselves to be treated by others.
The biggest issue isn't that other people violate our boundaries, it's that we violate our own boundaries. By letting someone violate our boundaries, we violate our own boundaries. This is self-betrayal. Your boundaries are defined by your feelings. Your feelings will always tell you whether a boundary of yours has been violated, no matter what kind of boundary it is. In this episode, Teal explains how boundaries are not a contradiction to oneness and teaches us how to develop healthy boundaries.

Iza tog kapitala međutim stoje biznismeni iz Srbije, koji su svoj prvi milion stekli u vreme Slobodana Miloševića.

What can fashionable ideas, blind faith, or pure fantasy possibly have to do with the scientific quest to understand the universe? Surely, theoretical physicists are immune to mere trends, dogmatic beliefs, or flights of fancy? In fact, acclaimed physicist and bestselling author Roger Penrose argues that researchers working at the extreme frontiers of physics are just as susceptible to these forces as anyone else. In this provocative book, he argues that fashion, faith, and fantasy, while sometimes productive and even essential in physics, may be leading today's researchers astray in three of the field's most important areas—string theory, quantum mechanics, and cosmology.
Arguing that string theory has veered away from physical reality by positing six extra hidden dimensions, Penrose cautions that the fashionable nature of a theory can cloud our judgment of its plausibility. In the case of quantum mechanics, its stunning success in explaining the atomic universe has led to an uncritical faith that it must also apply to reasonably massive objects, and Penrose responds by suggesting possible changes in quantum theory. Turning to cosmology, he argues that most of the current fantastical ideas about the origins of the universe cannot be true, but that an even wilder reality may lie behind them. Surely, theoretical physicists are immune to mere trends, dogmatic beliefs, or flights of fancy? In fact, acclaimed physicist and bestselling author Roger Penrose argues that researchers working at the extreme frontiers of physics are just as susceptible to these forces as anyone else. In this provocative book, he argues that fashion, faith, and fantasy, while sometimes productive and even essential in physics, may be leading today's researchers astray in three of the field's most important areas—string theory, quantum mechanics, and cosmology.
Arguing that string theory has veered away from physical reality by positing six extra hidden dimensions, Penrose cautions that the fashionable nature of a theory can cloud our judgment of its plausibility. In the case of quantum mechanics, its stunning success in explaining the atomic universe has led to an uncritical faith that it must also apply to reasonably massive objects, and Penrose responds by suggesting possible changes in quantum theory. Turning to cosmology, he argues that most of the current fantastical ideas about the origins of the universe cannot be true, but that an even wilder reality may lie behind them. It is a rare situation where we need to cast aside elementary assumptions that underpin our theories in order to advance them further. To be an advance two things are required: (1) any discarded assumption must be accounted for as a consequence of something deeper, and (2) the deeper cause must have consequences (predictions) that show it is necessary.
Dr. Vaccaro suspects that advancing our understanding of the nature of time, and dynamics in particular, is a situation of this kind. Dynamics is conventionally assumed to be an elemental part of nature. It is incorporated axiomatically in physical theories through conservation laws and compliant equations of motion. If, however, the conservation laws and equations of motion were found to be due to deeper causes, the conventional view of dynamics being elemental would need reworking. She will show how a violation of time reversal symmetry (T violation) of the kind observed in K and B meson decay might be such a cause.
Dr. Vaccaro uses a new quantum formalism based on the principle of superposition of multiple paths that treats time and space equally. The states of matter and fields are represented by paths over space and time. If there is no T violation, the formalism allows an object to be localized in both space and time, i.e. it would exist only in some small region of space and in some small interval of time. As the object would not exist before or after the time interval, there is no equation of motion and no conservation laws. The elementary assumption of dynamics has been clearly discarded here.
However, the same formalism with T violation is dramatically different. The T violation induces destructive interference between paths over time which makes it impossible for matter to remain localized at any one position. An equation of motion (the Schrodinger equation) emerges and conservation laws are obeyed. The discarded assumption is replaced with the emergence of dynamics as a consequence of T violation. Requirement 1 is satisfied.
Moreover, local variations in T violation induce corresponding variations in local clock time (like a quantum version of time dilation). I will briefly discuss how this might lead to physical evidence of the necessity of the new formalism and how it might fulfil requirement 2.

Earning your living from a trade of your choice. Being free to occupy spaces conducive to trading. These are basic human rights. However, in Stellenbosch informal traders do not have this most basic right.
On 16 January this year Stellenbosch Municipality evicted informal traders from a site (near the Rhenisch Church) - trading on this site had been going on for the past 17 years and it was well supported by tourists.
The Church -- to its everlasting shame -- had complained that the traders were defecating and urinating on and damaging church property, and making a noise with drums during church services, and threatened legal action against the Municipality if they did not remove the traders. The Council, however, is rudderless and leaderless on this issue. There are differences within the municipality and the council about how to respond. Municipal management and political leaders passed the buck to
their legal department, who advised to evict. The traders, at considerable cost to themselves, challenged the eviction in the High Court, which has to still rule on this.
As a sop the council said the traders should go and trade in the informal market near the taxi rank, but their tourist market does not shop there.
The traders have suffered great economic losses. Their families are suffering too as a result. Enterprising, hard working people have had their basic human rights violated.
The Municipality doesn't care. The Church doesn't care. And Stellenbosch Tourism -- which 'sells' Stellenbosch as an international tourism destination - doesn't care.
However we care about the plight of people who are denied their rights by an unjust system. We care about the lack of transparency in the Stellenbosch Municipality where everybody is passing the buck on this issue. We care about the marketing of Stellenbosch as a sustainable and better future for all"stakeholders" when the reality is different.

Think about the new tools that are taking over the Javascript ecosystem: Babel, Typescript, Rollup, ESLint, and smarter IDEs. What do they all have in common: they all take Javascript source code as input, and some emit Javascript code as output. This talk will be a deep dive into the basic building block all these tools share: Transforming your code into a JS Abstract Syntax Tree (AST). You'll learn to read, traverse, and manipulate the AST so you can extend Babel by writing your own plugins, or by writing custom ESLint rules to enforce your team's code conventions. You'll also learn how to create super powerful "code-mods" to automatically convert thousands of legacy ES5 scripts to ES6 in seconds.
