The park is home to cultural institutions such as the Auditorio Nacional and the Museum of Anthropology, as well as the popular Chapultepec Zoo. Pay your respects to the Niños Heroes, a monument which honors the six boy soldiers who gave their lives defending Castillo de Chapultepec. Today, the castle serves as the National Museum of History. Visit The Blue House, the birthplace of Frieda Kahlo, and the Museo Casa Estudio Diego Rivera y Frida Kahlo, where these two giants of Mexican art worked, lived and loved. Just to the south are the incredible murals and buildings of Ciudad Universitaria, which, when constructed in the 1950s, was the city’s largest single building project since the time of the Aztecs. The spirit of bohemia continues amid the sophisticated hues and beauty of districts such as Roma and Condesa. At Xochimilco, simply float away on a riot of color on the last of the city’s Aztec canals. In Mexico City there is color everywhere, and once you experience it, your memories will never fade.

Summary: Two young cowboys (Jack and Ennis) meet while working one summer herding sheep up on Brokeback Mountain. Alone in the woods, the two of them experiment together during one drunk night. The rest of the summer, they continue their affair and the two increasingly give in to their attraction to one another. At the end of the summer, the two separate and return to their “everyday” lives: one in Wyoming, and one in Texas. They take wives, have children, and otherwise follow the expectations society sets out for them. Four years after that summer, Jack writes to Ennis asking to meet up. From this point on, they continue with their “everyday” lives, but meet up every so often and take a trip out to the woods to be together. Ennis’s wife gets suspicious and eventually leaves him; upon hearing about the divorce, Jack shows up in Wyoming hoping to now be able to live a ranch life with Ennis, as a couple. The latter worries for both of their safeties: if the locals were to suspect “queer” activity, they would be killed. Brokeback Mountain follows the arc of their turbulent relationship and the struggle to be together. Analysis: Within this movie there are a few major themes that I wanted to highlight. In a parallel to the forces of nature, the forces of desire guide the action taken by Jack and Ennis, even when it goes against social norms or their judgment. Their relationship is emotional, passionate, and irrational, yet it completely overwhelms them and neither one can fully “quit” the other. This comparison to nature suggests that love is persistent and inescapable, even when faced with threat from their communities. This perspective on their relationship also implies that the two men had little control over this attraction, forced to surrender to love as a natural force. As the stark opposition to the forces of desire, home and culture work against the relationship between the two men. Ennis and Jack talk in length about their childhoods and upbringing; for Ennis, the memory of his homophobic father keeps him trapped, and he frequently references being unable to get away from his past. Jack represents the other side of the dyad. He has a desire to escape “home” and the conventions associated with it that keep him from being able to start a life with Ennis. For both, home is representative of social restrictions, and Brokeback Mountain (or travel in any capacity, for example, Mexico) represents freedom and escape from convention. Brokeback Mountain is their idealized life, and will be used in conversation by the two men as synonymous to their relationship. The wild expanse of the mountain is a stark contrast to their simple, confining homes in the city. Just like the personalities of the two young men are juxtaposed against one another, the themes of love and loneliness are paired and contrasted throughout the film. While both men live “full” lives by societal standards— jobs, families, etc. — they were still haunted by an emptiness that stemmed from their separation. Jack and Ennis are estranged from their communities: first physically, through their isolation on Brokeback Mountain, and then emotionally, as their communities reject their attraction for one another and force them to live in fear and denial. It is important to keep in mind that this film reached a very broad audience, with the directors attempting to appeal to many demographics. While overall it may have helped bring issues of homophobia into the public eye, the film almost seems to want to counteract typical “sissy” stereotypes of gay men by over-masculinizing the characters of Jake and Ennis, making it an even harsher juxtaposition against their desire for one another. This relates directly to topics of visibility, and how media (especially media that has reached such a peak popularity) colors perceptions on issues of gender and sexuality. As Hilton-Morrow said, the good comes with the bad: exposure is given, but certain ideas about queerness are reinforced. However, it would be a mistake to call Brokeback Mountain a simple gay love story. More accurately, it is a tragedy about the repression of homosexual identity and the “closet” phenomenon. The consequences of social intolerance become very clear when the character that is more open about his sexual identity is punished for it. This ending opens up a discussion about loss (on one’s self and of love) and socially imposed repression.
