2017 Honda CR-V VTi-LX new car review
What is it?
The top-of-the-range model in Honda’s new CR-V range. The Japanese brand has given the family-friendly SUV a major overhaul as it bids to turnaround disappointing sales in recent years.
Underneath the fresh exterior and interior styling is a new 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine, borrowed from the new Civic small car.
How much does it cost and what do you get?
While the new range begins at $30,690 (plus on-road costs) for the front-wheel drive VTi model, this flagship all-wheel drive VTi-LX is priced from $44,290.
For that money you get larger 18-inch alloy wheels, keyless entry and ignition, power tailgate, front and rear parking sensors, leather upholstery, panoramic sunroof, 7.0-inch infotainment touchscreen, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, navigation, Bluetooth and DAB+ digital radio plus a comprehensive suite of safety features that aren't available in other models.
What’s under the bonnet?
The old model’s 2.0- and 2.4-litre four-cylinder engines have been dumped in favour of the new 1.5-litre four-cylinder turbocharged unit.
It produces a 140kW of power and 240Nm of torque and is paired exclusively to a Continuously Variable Transmission in all models.
It’s a healthy amount of performance but it does come with some turbo lag and the CVT’s natural dullness off the mark can make the CR-V feel a little sluggish at times. But once it’s on the move the engine does a good job of motivating the CR-V.
However, a small engine in such a big SUV does have an impact on fuel economy. The claimed combined city-country cycle is 7.0-litres per 100km but during our urban test driving the trip computer read 11.2L/100km.
What’s it like to drive?
The CR-V has never been the most dynamic SUV in its class, instead preferring to be more comfort biased. This new generation model has improved its dynamic credentials, the steering is nicely weighted and linear and the chassis is more responsive than before.
But it’s still one of the more comfortable offerings with soft, compliant suspension that gives way to body lean if you corner too eagerly.
What’s it like inside?
The CR-V has always been one of the most accommodating mid-size SUVs and this new model is no different.
The engineers and designers have extended the cabin space from what was already one of the most spacious interiors. While room in the front is still good it’s the generous real estate in the back seat that will appeal to families. There’s plenty of legroom to accommodate even tall teenagers and adults, although the sunroof does eat into headroom and restricts anyone over 185cm tall.
There’s also plenty of small item storage space up front, with a deep centre console box that has a sliding lid that doubles as a shelf.
The design of the cabin may not appeal to everyone though, with its ‘90s style dashboard graphics and edgy, angular design. But there’s no faulting its practically.
Is it safe?
The VTi-LX is currently the only CR-V to come with Honda’s active safety suite. It includes autonomous emergency braking, forward collision warning, lane departure warning and adaptive cruise control.
Honda’s Lane Watch system is in every model though, and uses a camera mounted in the passenger side wing mirror to display a wide angle view of your blind spot on the infotainment screen whenever you indicate to the left.
Would I buy it?
Because you want the room of large SUV in a compact body. You also value the extra safety features exclusive to the VTi-LX. The CR-V is a strong entrant in the highly-competitive mid-size SUV segment and deserves to be on your short-list if you’re in the market for a new, high-grade model.
What else should I consider?
That short-list should also include the Volkswagen Tiguan 132TSI (from $41,490), Mazda CX-5 GT (from $44,390), Hyundai Tucson Highlander (from $45,450) and Kia Sportage GT-Line (from $43,490) to name a few.
