Private I.D. - A Little Fun 7" (1981)

Private I.D. was a new wave/ska band from Aberdeen, Scotland who only released two singles (as far as I know). This is their first one and both songs are ska-influenced.

A - A Little Fun
B - Stay Back

The vocalist was Jacqui Copland who was a back-up vocalist for some well-known acts including Duran Duran. Read about her HERE.

The second single isn't ska at all but I can't find any trace of it ever being online so I included the 12" version of it in the download.

A - Cold Cold Sweat
B1 - Cold Cold Sweat (instrumental)
B2 - Perfect Lady

Beeside - What You Call Love 7'' (1981)

This is an extremely rare record that took me years and years to find. The a-side is female-fronted punk reggae. The b-side is a rockin' song with an early new wave influence. Both sides are good.

I don't know anything about the band but I'm pretty sure they were from the US. I have no idea if they ever released anything else.
As rare as it is there is currently a copy available on Discogs for $45.00 which I think is reasonable (no, I'm not the one selling it and I don't know the person who is selling it.)

Jil Thorp and the Beat Boys

Jil Thorp and the Beat Boys (also spelled Jil Thorp & the Beat Boys) were from Louisville, Kentucky. They were a five-piece new wave/rock/ska band that sometimes went a little psychedelic. They played everything and Jil Thorp sometimes sounded like Patti Smith. The reason you may know them is because the song "Central Intelligence" from this album was on the Jump Up Records compilation "Death of an American Skathic

1 Father Knows Best
2 Music for Easy Girls
3 Play with Fire
4 Slippin' Away Boys
5 Tourists
6 Greasy but Fast
7 Central Intelligence
8 Moisture
9 Black Jeans
10 Tumours of Love
11 (Got to) Get Rid of Them
12 Mission Complete

This download also includes their 7" even though it doesn't have any ska on it. My record is in pretty rough shape so I apologize for the sound quality but since it's hard to find and usually sells for about $60.00 I'm in no hurry to replace it.
A - The Young and the Breastless
B1 - Stranded
B2 - Love Young

Splitters [California] - Don't Stop 7" (1982)

When I posted the RAM 7" I said that I considered that record to be in the top three of the rarest California ska records. I mentioned that I did not have the other two of the top three, but now I have them and I will be posting them here shortly.
The one I consider the absolute rarest (based on my own mission to find these gems) is by a band called The Corvairs. I have since acquired two singles by the Corvairs and, although I said in the RAM post that the rarest is not as good as good as the other two, I rescind that statement. Both of their singles are excellent.
The one I considered 'the third rarest' is a 4 song 7" by a band called Dutty Rass. I just got that one yesterday and I haven't actually listened to it yet.

The reason I'm saying all of this in this particular post is because this would be #4 on the list. I know nothing about this band except that the lead singer Dilithium Cristil (whose real name is Celena Allen) was invited to pose in Playboy in 1985 in an issue that featured 'The Women of Rock'.

Aside from that I can't find any information about the band or any individual members. I don't know if they ever recorded anything else but I know this record is extremely difficult to track down and both songs are great. Neither track is straightforward ska but quintessential new wave with the B-side showing a 2 Tone influence.

A - Don't Stop

B - Go Home

Etch-A-Sketch [Ann Arbor Michigan]

The band Etch-A-Sketch from Ann Arbor Michigan made an impact in the American ska scene of the early 90s but, sadly, they never released anything aside from their very few appearances on compilations. They released two songs on the "Ska Takes the Great Lakes" compilation as well as the song "Too Late" on the "Death of an American Skathic" comp.

As far as I know they only got around to recording six songs in a studio. This download includes all six of those songs.

1  Hit the Ground
2 Inhibitions
3 (Spirit of) Leslie Kong
4 Too Late
5 Escape
6 Killer Bees

Zatopek

Zatopek was a jazz-punk band from Berlin, Germany who named themselves after a Czechoslovak long-distance runner.

They are not a ska band! If you like The Mystic Knights of the Oingo Boingo you might like them. The only reason that I'm posting this record is because it is always sold online as a ska record.

1 Italo
2 Maxi on Bahamas
3 Strangers in the Night
4 Ach Wie Gut (das Ich Nich Beichten Geh')

Ex-Hole - Private Boyscout 7" (1980)

A - Private Boyscout

B - Flying Thing

Ex-Hole was a Belgian new wave band who released a few singles between 1978 and 1982 and one album called Only for the Fun in 1981. I don't know if this is their only ska-inspired song because I have never heard the album yet. Everything I have heard by them I have liked so I intend to collect all of their stuff but I think this is a great record so I had to post it without having much more to go on.

Liz & Lizards - P.A. Ska (1980)

Female fronted band from Finland that released 2 singles before changing their name to The Lizards and releasing a full-length and 2 more singles.

This is their first release and really their only ska song but the song Kujan Kuningas - the title track from their second single -  had a ska influence and so did the song Bodybuilding from the LP. For whatever reason they re-recorded Bodybuilding without the ska sound before they released it as a single.

I was just going to post the P.A. Ska single but all of this music is hard to find so this download includes the LP and all 4 singles.

Dee Sign - Dee Sign LP (1981) [RE-UPLOADED MAY 30th, 2016]

This is one of those things that you always see for sale in the ska section but it really isn't ska at all. It's punk with only the slightest reggae influence. For fans of the Slits, Mo-Dettes, or Liliput.

Dee Sign were an all-female band from Denmark and this is probably the only thing they released. It is not hard to find a copy, but it's a pretty decent punk album that is often overlooked. Lead singer Annie Larsen later changed her name to Annie Panic and played with the band Public Panic before releasing an eponymous demo cassette in 1990.

 1 Sensation

3 Worlds
4 Une Bonne Idée

8 Women

Cyndi Lauper - Ska EP

Cyndi Lauper never did a ska EP but, if she did, it would be this.

This was supposed to be my SOTD but there were a couple to choose from. These songs were intended to be used in my next podcast but I couldn't pick which one I thought represented Cyndi Lauper properly.

She released her first album She's so Unusual in 1984 when she was 31 years old - although she did release a record with her band Blue Angel. (When she was 24 she damaged her vocal chords and was told by a doctor that she would never sing again).

She's so Unusual featured the song "Witness" which was overlooked but remained a favorite of Cyndi's.
It was the B-side to several of her singles off that album starting with "She Bop" (a song about masturbation - using the 'self-service' pumps), I'll Kiss You, and All Through the Night which was intended to be a reggae song but was changed by her producers before it was recorded. When she performed All Through the Night live she performed it in a reggae style as it was intended:

...then, again in 1986 Witness was the B-side to the Change of Heart single from her second album True Colors.

After that she didn't delve much into the ska/reggae sound until 10 years later with her 1996 album Sisters of Avalon when she recorded the song Brimstone and Fire

Then, 10 years after that, she recorded a live version of All Through the Night with Shaggy. (Don't ask my opinion about this version - I will not say good things)

1 Witness
2 All Through the Night (featuring Shaggy)
3 Brimstone and Fire
4 Witness (live at The Summit 1984)
