A few miles outside Port-au-Prince is a government-established camp for displaced people — Camp Corail, the only "official" camp in Haiti. Rows and rows of neatly spaced tents provide shelter for thousands of people. But just past Corail, a more "organic" community has sprouted. Nearly 100,000 squatters have taken things into their own hands and taken to the hills.

I was asked to direct a charity video to help the earthquake victims in Haiti. I wanted to connect the artists with the actual people of Haiti, so I designed the clapping of their hands to simulate the white rubble in all the photos. Then it was a matter of actually going to Haiti for the people to return the claps. Close after the earthquake, I flew into the Dominican Republic on my own dime. Haiti was closed off to visitors, so I bribed my way through the border and crossed into the devastation. With two friends, I carried everything I needed including a Canon 7D on my back.
You have to understand that at this point I had no idea what I was going to shoot, or what I was going to see. It was a daunting task to drop yourself in the middle of nowhere and start shooting. But I felt it was important that the video was seen through my eyes - that an actual human being would be there meeting people and getting close. The shots are close proximity to the lens - not long, safe, and impersonal like news footage. If the cameraman is distanced, so is the viewer. When you watch, I want you there with me, meeting and seeing everyone and everything, inches away from the lens. I thought that by being there, experiencing it, I would interpret whatever I felt into something more pure and personal.
Unfortunately, when I finished my edit, the label decided to splice together news reel footage anyway, demolishing my intentions. In this case, the common goal of finding money for Haiti lessoned the blow, as the cause is obviously greater than a silly edit disagreement. But here is my director's cut for posterity.
Those couple days in Haiti were brutal and beautiful. It was dangerous in many ways, but it was a truly eye opening experience. The stories I experienced are way too much for this post, but the video ultimately speaks for itself. Everything I felt is in the video. And it is important to note Haiti still needs our help.

Haiti (
i/ˈheɪti/; French: Haïti [a.iti]; Haitian Creole: Ayiti [ajiti]), officially the Republic of Haiti (French: République d'Haïti; Haitian Creole: Repiblik Ayiti), is a country in the western hemisphere, and is located on the island of Hispaniola, in the Greater Antilles archipelago of the Caribbean. It occupies the western three-eighths of the island which it shares with the Dominican Republic. Haiti is 27,750 square kilometres (10,714 sq mi) in size and has an estimated 10.6 million people, making it the most populous country in the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) and the third-most populous country in the Caribbean as a whole.
Originally inhabited by the indigenous Taíno people, Europeans first became aware of the island on December 5, 1492 during the first voyage of Christopher Columbus across the Atlantic. When Columbus first landed in Haiti, he had thought he had found India or Asia. Deciding to establish the first settlement in the area, a contingent of men were left at an outpost christened La Navidad because of the wreck to their sunken flagship, the Santa Maria, that occurred at Christmas, north of what is now Limonade. The island was named Hispaniola and claimed by Spain, which ruled until the early 17th century. Competing claims and settlements by the French led to the western portion of the island being ceded to France, which named it Saint-Domingue. The development of sugarcane plantations, worked by slaves brought from Africa, led to the colony being among the most lucrative in the world.

We get asked to visit a lot of Countries and many times it can become overwhelming. Communicating with new leaders, learning about new projects, praying about how we can support the work happening in each country….We’re still a relatively small ministry with limited resources so not being able to run through every open door can often become discouraging as well. For a little over two years we had been talking with the leaders at Hands and Feet about coming and blessing their kids with some new boards and ramps. When the opportunity finally presented itself we knew it was time to jump on it. This was the first time anyone from our team had ever been to Haiti. We knew through the media that Haiti was still in shambles from the earthquake in 2010 but had no idea of its extent. Through our short time in Grand Goave, our group experienced the joy of children in the orphanages who knew the Love of Jesus amongst the darkness that controls the country. We experienced Christians fulfilling the mission to take care of the widows and orphans first hand. The door is open, the call is clear. Haiti is in desperate need for more Jesus. It is our prayer and hope that we can help send teams to partner with organizations like Hands and Feet who are spreading the good news of Salvation through our Savior Jesus Christ for many years to come. JEAN-RONEL NOEL My name is Jean Noel. I am the cofounder of ENERSA. My partner and I, Alex Georges, we started in my garage six, seven years ago, making small experiments with the solar panels. ALEX GEORGES This is the raw material. We work them to become actual street lights, solar street lights. JEAN-RONEL NOEL We wanted to be part of something special, and because both of us grew up in Haiti, so we know what the situation is. We have plenty of sunshine, so is there a way that you can harvest energy from the sun and to resolve the energy problem? So this is something that is completely different, and it was something completely new. At the beginning almost everybody thought, “Those guys are really crazy. They don’t have nothing to do? Spending their time making some experiment on solar panels and LED light bulbs?” And even now we come with the product and say, “This is Haitian-made product,” most people they don’t believe us. At the beginning, having $500 contract was great news, because we had money for next week. This is the way we started. Now we have like big contract and we have 62 employees right now, so we think we found the right track. Most of the employees we have come from shanty towns. Some from Cite Soleil, some from Maissade, Cite Castro, you know very populated area. We train them here. There is no social security network in Haiti, so for our workers, we are the social security network. If they were not working, probably some of them would be gang members. In fact, when we were starting ENERSA, the situation was really, really bad in Haiti, and some of the guys, they are trying to recruit them to be gang members. They offer you $500 and a gun, and you are an unemployed guy, you have no future, so you don’t see yourself a part of nothing, so it’s easy to accept this offer. The temptation is high. Some of the guys—at the beginning we were really smart and they were calling me and saying, “I have no money. I have nothing.” I would say, “Don’t go there. Don’t go there, because you have no future in the gang.” We have installed 200 lights in Cite Soleil. They know that ENERSA is hiring people from Cite Soleil, and brought the light to Cite Soleil. When you do something, you can see the impact on the population and you can say, “This is because of me.” FRANTZ DEROSIER Working for Enersa is great. It has played a significant role in my life. I’ve accomplished a great deal with this job, I’ve been able to pay my housing bills, that’s how I make my living, my child’s school tuition money comes from that, and everything. I’m happy to be a part of Enersa because I feel that this is where I belong. I have strong ties to this community. I’m very familiar with the people here. We’ve known each other for the past 28 years. We’ve spent a lot of time together. We all love each other. They’re all familiar with what I do. They approve of my work. They also love Enersa. I’ve told the director that my dream is to see my two children do even better than I’ve done in life myself. First, complete high school, then go to a university for their studies and I’ll be proud to see the fruits of my labor with Enersa knowing that I was able to take good care of my children, and happy to see them succeed in life.

Rows and rows of neatly spaced tents provide shelter for thousands of people. But just past Corail, a more "organic" community has sprouted. I was asked to direct a charity video to help the earthquake victims in Haiti. I wanted to connect the artists with the actual people of Haiti, so I designed the clapping of their hands to simulate the white rubble in all the photos. Then it was a matter of actually going to Haiti for the people to return the claps. Close after the earthquake, I flew into the Dominican Republic on my own dime. Haiti was closed off to visitors, so I bribed my way through the border and crossed into the devastation. With two friends, I carried everything I needed including a Canon 7D on my back. You have to understand that at this point I had no idea what I was going to shoot, or what I was going to see. It was a daunting task to drop yourself in the middle of nowhere and start shooting. Haiti Mission Trip
We get asked to visit a lot of Countries and many times it can become overwhelming. Communicating with new leaders, learning about new projects, praying about how we can support the work happening in each country….We’re still a relatively small ministry with limited resources so not being able to run through every open door can often become discouraging as well. For a little over two years we had been talking with the leaders at Hands and Feet about coming and blessing their kids with some new boards and ramps. When the opportunity finally presented itself we knew it was time to jump on it. This was the first time anyone from our team had ever been to Haiti. I was asked to direct a charity video to help the earthquake victims in Haiti. I wanted to connect the artists with the actual people of Haiti, so I designed the clapping of their hands to simulate the white rubble in all the photos. Then it was a matter of actually going to Haiti for the people to return the claps. Close after the earthquake, I flew into the Dominican Republic on my own dime. Haiti was closed off to visitors, so I bribed my way through the border and crossed into the devastation. With two friends, I carried everything I needed including a Canon 7D on my back.
You have to understand that at this point I had no idea what I was going to shoot, or what I was going to see. It was a daunting task to drop yourself in the middle of nowhere and start shooting. But I felt it was important that the video was seen through my eyes - that an actual human being would be there meeting people and getting close. The shots are close proximity to the lens - not long, safe, and impersonal like news footage. If the cameraman is distanced, so is the viewer. When you watch, I want you there with me, meeting and seeing everyone and everything, inches away from the lens. I thought that by being there, experiencing it, I would interpret whatever I felt into something more pure and personal.
Unfortunately, when I finished my edit, the label decided to splice together news reel footage anyway, demolishing my intentions. In this case, the common goal of finding money for Haiti lessoned the blow, as the cause is obviously greater than a silly edit disagreement. But here is my director's cut for posterity.
Those couple days in Haiti were brutal and beautiful. It was dangerous in many ways, but it was a truly eye opening experience. The stories I experienced are way too much for this post, but the video ultimately speaks for itself. Everything I felt is in the video. And it is important to note Haiti still needs our help.

Through our short time in Grand Goave, our group experienced the joy of children in the orphanages who knew the Love of Jesus amongst the darkness that controls the country. We experienced Christians fulfilling the mission to take care of the widows and orphans first hand. The door is open, the call is clear. Haiti is in desperate need for more Jesus. It is our prayer and hope that we can help send teams to partner with organizations like Hands and Feet who are spreading the good news of Salvation through our Savior Jesus Christ for many years to come. Spending their time making some experiment on solar panels and LED light bulbs?”
And even now we come with the product and say, “This is Haitian-made product,” most people they don’t believe us.
At the beginning, having $500 contract was great news, because we had money for next week. This is the way we started. Now we have like big contract and we have 62 employees right now, so we think we found the right track.
Most of the employees we have come from shanty towns. Some from Cite Soleil, some from Maissade, Cite Castro, you know very populated area. We train them here. There is no social security network in Haiti, so for our workers, we are the social security network. If they were not working, probably some of them would be gang members.

My name is Jean Noel. I am the cofounder of ENERSA. My partner and I, Alex Georges, we started in my garage six, seven years ago, making small experiments with the solar panels.

We wanted to be part of something special, and because both of us grew up in Haiti, so we know what the situation is. We have plenty of sunshine, so is there a way that you can harvest energy from the sun and to resolve the energy problem? So this is something that is completely different, and it was something completely new. At the beginning almost everybody thought, “Those guys are really crazy. They don’t have nothing to do? Spending their time making some experiment on solar panels and LED light bulbs?”
And even now we come with the product and say, “This is Haitian-made product,” most people they don’t believe us.
At the beginning, having $500 contract was great news, because we had money for next week. This is the way we started. Now we have like big contract and we have 62 employees right now, so we think we found the right track.
Most of the employees we have come from shanty towns. Some from Cite Soleil, some from Maissade, Cite Castro, you know very populated area. We train them here. There is no social security network in Haiti, so for our workers, we are the social security network. If they were not working, probably some of them would be gang members.

Around Haiti
A year ago, as I was in the middle of a new travelling-phase in my life, discovering a lot of magical places in the world, I realised that back home there were so many of them I didn't know. This summer'14 , with a few friends from college and some family members, we rented a car and discovered some of the beauties this Caribbean island holds. I discovered so many things not only about those magical places but also about the amazing people that live around them and this with other eyes, being surrounded by foreigners. This is a real Haiti adventure, we rode on the 4 person motorbikes, took pickup truck buses from Cap-Haitian to Gonaives where we got taken by the Ebenezer mission before continuing on to puert au prince. Haiti is great, the people are nice and a lot of fun, the Haitian beer "Prestige" was great. Haiti has been though a lot with the huge earthquake, hurricane sandy and the constant missmanagement of charity money. It needs more tourism and more money spent stimulating the local economy. After exploring gonaives we stayed in the nicest hotel in puerto prince which was playing hotel california as soon as we walked in. Haiti is the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere and more than 99% of Haitian are black people. Haiti has its heyday in the 18C during French colonial era. Due to the rapid expansion of sugar and coffee plantation, a lot of Africans were brought here to fulfil the labour need for farming. Then it was the richest colony in the New World. The harsh treatment to the slaves initiated a lot of resistance and revolution. Haiti is the only country succeed in black revolution and also the first black republic,which was formed in 1804, in the world. After the disastrous earthquake in 2010, Haiti is now on the way recovered from the damages and basic infrastructure is functioned. However Haiti still need to face the poverty problem as before and it was a long long way to go. Haiti is not an easy place to travel. The tourism infrastructure is underdeveloped and the living cost is comparatively high in this region.

The Citadelle Laferrière or, Citadelle Henry Christophe, or simply the Citadelle, is a large mountaintop fortress in northern Haiti, approximately 17 miles south of the city of Cap-Haïtien and five miles uphill from the town of Milot. - The massive stone structure was built by up to 20,000 workers between 1805 and 1820 as part of a system of fortifications designed to keep the newly independent nation of Haiti safe from French incursions. The Citadel was built several miles inland, and atop the 3,000 ft (910 m) Bonnet a L’Eveque mountain, to deter attacks and to provide a lookout into the nearby valleys. Cap-Haïtien and the adjoining Atlantic Ocean are visible from the roof of the fortress. Anecdotally, it is possible to sight the eastern coast of Cuba, some 90 miles (140 km) to the west, on clear days.
About the Pilot:
Nick Greece edits the United States Hang Gliding and Paragliding Association's magazine and is the President of the Cloudbase Foundation and director of the WheelsUp Program. He is the current US National Paragliding Champion, Paragliding World Cup America's Champion. He is an Ozone Team Pilot and a brand ambassador for KAVU, KEEN, and Pocketfuel Naturals.

A year ago, as I was in the middle of a new travelling-phase in my life, discovering a lot of magical places in the world, I realised that back home there were so many of them I didn't know. This summer'14 , with a few friends from college and some family members, we rented a car and discovered some of the beauties this Caribbean island holds. I discovered so many things not only about those magical places but also about the amazing people that live around them and this with other eyes, being surrounded by foreigners.
I hope that through this video of my friends and I, you will be able to get a glimpse of those magic sites in Haiti and in the Dominican Republic and I hope that it will drive you to want to know this island and discover its treasures just like we did.

On August, 17, 2016, Emmanuel Altenor made his first journey to Haiti. He took in as many images and experienced as much as he could, and the result of that is this travel doc, Diaspora Come Home. However, for those with patience and an open mind, Haiti reveals a rich culture that is unique among post-colonial nations. It is extremely helpful when traveling in Haiti to have a local contact, through a church, a hotel, or just through making friends with someone. Experiences like dining locally, riding on a tap-tap, or strolling through one of the insanely crowded outdoor markets are great fun and very worth doing but are much safer and easier if you have a trusted Haitian to go along as a guide and interpreter. The nice people at the ebenezer missions gave us some history and info about haiti and told us about the government gold situation and how they claim all gold found on private land. After exploring gonaives we stayed in the nicest hotel in puerto prince which was playing hotel california as soon as we walked in. Imagine soaring through desert and mountain terrain more than a thousand feet above the ground – and not in a plane or helicopter.
Instead of hiking or bike riding down trails, Bootleg Canyon Flightlines’ zip-line tour in Boulder City allows adventure seekers to “fly” and get a whole new perspective on the beautiful desert valley below.
“These unique aerial trails attract, educate and amaze people,” said Ian Green, co-founder of the GreenHeart Conservation Company. “[It] allows them to follow the path of a bird. You will not find a more exhilarating trail in the world.”
While Las Vegas provides several extreme outdoor adventures, Bootleg Canyon Flightlines proves to be one of a kind.
“This ride is aided by nature,” said Green. “The freedom of silent flight – unless you like to scream – is something that leaves you in awe.”
For those who aren’t familiar with zip-lines, passengers sit in their own paragliding harness that’s suspended from cable wires. On this tour, riders travel from one point to another by flying over the desert ecosystem from the top of Red Mountain. Some will soar at speeds up to 50 miles per hour..
“All of our riders to date left with the glow, [with] a smile of somebody who feels very much alive,” said Green.
After a brief safety orientation, your tour includes a quick drive up the canyon hill. From here, you'll hike uphill for about half an hour. Once you reach your destination, you'll coast through four runs, each presenting a different kind of experience. The final run grabs the most attention since it’s the fastest.
“People tend to get a wake-up call,” said Scott Stemmer, a tour guide for Bootleg Canyon Flightlines. “It’s fun watching their expressions.”
For those who are apprehensive about flying down the canyons, the tour guides help make everyone feel comfortable.
“Making fun of myself usually works pretty well,” Stemmer said. “It gets them to laugh and lighten up a bit.”
If you’re afraid of heights, then let this be the one adventure that helps you conquer your fear for good.
“We have had people come down who were afraid when they got to the top and they were just absolutely happy that they did it when they got to the bottom,” said tour guide Max Margolis.
From teens to senior citizens, people of all ages can enjoy this trip.
“We had an 84-year-old World War II vet actually come through,” Margolis said. “I really don’t think anyone has enjoyed it more than he did. He loved it.”
Bob Keill, a pilot who visited from Salt Lake City, heartily endorsed the zip-line tour.
“Take a chance!” he exclaimed. “I think everybody should get out and try it at least once.”
GreenHeart, Green’s eco-tourism company, is responsible for bringing Bootleg Canyon Flightlines to Boulder City. It also has establishments in countries such as Guyana, Haiti, Brazil, Panama, Ghana, Belize and Canada.
Bootleg Canyon Flightlines offers an exhilarating and unique ride through the desert canyon while contributing to conserving the environment.
“Flightlines is part of a sustainable park strategy,” explained Green. “With the help of our guests’ support, the revenue is directed back to ensure the activity has a positive impact on the land. This makes protecting nature a positive experience for all involved.”
The combination of desert mountain awareness and the chance to admire the splendor of the Southwest by bird’s-eye view make the drive out to Bootleg Canyon Flightlines worth the trip.
“This is green adrenaline and something that is not to be missed,” Green said.
