China Box Office: ‘Wolf Warriors II’ Wins Fourth Weekend, Extends Total to $769 Million

“Wolf Warriors II” narrowly won its fourth weekend at the top of the Chinese box office ahead of a chasing pack of new release titles. After 25 days in theaters it has grossed $769 million.
Data from local provider Ent Group, shows “Wolf Warriors II” briefly losing its top spot on Friday to “Paradox.” But on Saturday and and Sunday, the patriotic action sensation reclaimed its habitual position. Both films enjoyed some 70,000 screenings per day.
Every ticket sold pushes “Wolf Warriors II” further into the lead as the all time biggest movie ever released in China. Its total is now 50% bigger than previous claimant “The Mermaid.”
This was also another weekend in which the top Chinese film outpaced the top film at the North American box office. Stateside winner, “Hitman’s Bodyguard” earned $21.6 million.
Hong Kong-made crime actioner, “Paradox,” which opened the Hong Kong Summer International Film Festival, was released on Thursday and scored $31.4 million over the weekend. It »

Jerry Lewis, an actor and auteur who was one of the most influential forces in American comedy, died Sunday morning at his Las Vegas. He was 91.
"Legendary entertainer Jerry Lewis passed away peacefully today of natural causes at 91 at his home with family by his side," his family said in a statement to the Las Vegas Review-Journal writer John Katsilometes. No cause of death was announced.

Lionsgate and Summit's action-comedy The Hitman's Bodyguard finished ahead of pre-weekend expectations and took the #1 spot at the weekend box office while WB and New Line's Annabelle: Creation scored a second place finish over its sophomore frame. The weekend wasn't too kind, however, to Bleecker's Logan Lucky, which did manage to finish third, but was unable to crack double digits from over 3,000 locations. As for the weekend overall, the top twelve narrowly escaped becoming the worst weekend of 2017 by less than $1 million by combining for $81.5 million. As of right now, this means the month of August is currently pacing 34% behind August last year while the summer season is pacing 12.8% behind last year. With an estimated $21.6 million, Lionsgate's release of The Hitman's Bodyguard finished #1 at the box office. Haugesund, Norway — Norwegian director Erik Poppe’s historical epic, ”The King’s Choice” (”Kongens nei”), was the Amanda jury’s clear favorite at this year’s awards. Nominated for a record 13 Amandas — Norway’s national film prizes — it snagged eight on Saturday night at Haugesund’s Scandic Maritim Hall. The kudos ceremony unspooled one day before the opening of the 45th Norwegian Intl. Film Festival in Haugesund, which runs through Aug. 25.
Norwegian actress (and singer) Pia Tjelta, who earlier on the day was honored with a stone at Haugesund’s walk of fame – the Haraldsgate – hosted the show, which was televised by Norwegian commercial broadcaster TV. A majority of Amanda winners went on stage to receive their statuettes.

Jaime King, who starred on four seasons of Hart of Dixie, has joined the cast of Ice Cream in the Cupboard, an indie drama adapted from the book by Pat Moffett.
Drew Pollins is directing the project, which hails from Serenity Media Group and is shooting in Los Angeles.
The book tells of a couple’s fractured life when the wife is diagnosed with early-onset Alzheimer’s disease. Claudia Ferri (The Killing) and Dana Ashbrook (Twin Peaks) are playing the couple. King will play a neurologist who tries to help the duo.

‘Girls Trip’ Crosses $100 Million at Domestic Box Office

Universal Pictures’ “Girls Trip” has crossed the $100 million mark at the domestic box office after four weeks, to become the studio’s sixth film to reach that milestone this year.
“Girls Trip” has also taken in $9.9 million internationally as it starts its foreign rollout. Australia and Romania will release the film on Aug. 31, with additional markets launching the film through the end of the year.

It’s not as elaborate as the premiere, not as recognizable a template as the “Mad Max” or “Guardians of the Galaxy” diversions, nor is it iconic like “Pickle Rick.” But with “The Whirly Dirly Conspiracy,” “Rick and Morty” seems to have regained its guiding principles to deliver the best episode of Season 3 so far.
Cutting to the chase in a quick cold open (that finds Jerry doing even worse than we might have previously suspected), Rick drags Jerry from his dismal apartment and on a carefree trip to a planet where death is an impossibility. Protected by a shield of immortality, the two of them kick back with various colored beverages, assuming this consequence-free getaway is the recharge that Jerry needs.

Consider the penultimate episodes of previous “Game of Thrones” seasons’ devastating displays of scale and loss: “Battle of the Bastards,” last year’s signature showdown of houses; Season 3’s fateful Red Wedding gutpunch in “The Rains of Castamere”; even the opening season’s “Baelor” saw Ned meeting a shocking end.
Add to the list “Beyond the Wall,” an episode that didn’t have quite the notable body count that some of those other installments did, but is every bit the paradigm shift that its predecessors were. Opening up this world to a new kind of monster, “Beyond the Wall” might not be the best episode of the season, but it’s more assuredly the most important. By bringing the season-long promise of terror and triumph in rapid succession, the series turned this vital episode into a horror story to remember.

Oliver Stone, the ever controversial American-French director, has been named as president of the competition jury for the upcoming Busan International Film Festival. The Busan festival is no stranger to controversy.
Stone heads an impressive panel including Iranian director Bahman Ghobadi (“A Time for Drunken Horses”), French cinematographer Agnes Godard (“The Dreamlife of Angels”), Philippines director Lav Diaz (“From What is Before,” “The Woman Who Left”), and Korean director Jang Sun-woo (“Lies”). They will judge a selection of Asian films in the New Currents section that represents the festival’s cornerstone.
