The Black Keys

I didn’t get around to do any best of 2010 lists yet… even without work it’s been a busy week. Videos of the year is always one of my favorites to pull together, so I’m pretty sure I’ll do that and a best of the year muxtape mix, at the very least. 2010 was a really good year for music… much better than 2009, I think. It was also, as the long hiatuses and lack of posts on this site might hint at, a really good year for me personally, filled with a lot of changes for the better.

December Mix

I had the mix up on time this month but I never got around to a writeup. It feels so late at this point that it almost loses its purpose, so I’ll just point out that I think this Barbara Brown (aka Barbara & The Browns) track is superb, and only partially because it got sampled for last year’s Diamond District album. Other than the Syl Johnson box set, the Kent collection of her 1966-1972 recordings is probably one of the better albums I’ve picked up this year, so why not end the year with it.

Stik Figa

Really loving this track “From The Top” by Topeka, Kansas’ Stik Figa, produced by my favorite beatsmith of late, Oddisee. The track kicks off Mello Music‘s Helpless Dreamer compilation, but also is to be included on an EP of the same name that drops Thursday 2 December. The beat is heavenly and his lyrics are touching, inspirational, and relevant in a “Can It Be All So Simple”/“Where Wuz Heaven” way.
