The politics of Austria take place in a framework of a federal parliamentary representative democratic republic, with a Federal Chancellor as the head of government, and a Federal President as head of state. Governments, both local and federal, exercise executive power. Federal legislative power is vested both in the government and in the two chambers of parliament, the National Council and the Federal Council. Since 1949 the conservative Austrian People's Party (ÖVP) and the center-left Social Democratic Party of Austria (SPÖ) have largely dominated the party-political landscape of Austria.
The judiciary is independent of the executive and the legislature, and exclusively federal in nature: there are no state courts.
The ethnically and culturally heterogeneous nation state of Austria is one of the many remnant states of Austria-Hungary, a vast multinational empire that ceased to exist in 1918. The Austrian Republic was preceded by a constitutional monarchy, whose legislative body was elected by, as The New York Times put it, "quasi-universal (male) suffrage" for the first time in 1897.
The following outline is provided as an overview of and topical guide to politics and political science:
Politics – the exercise of power; process by which groups of people make collective decisions. Politics is the art or science of running governmental or state affairs (including behavior within civil governments), institutions, fields, and special interest groups such as the corporate, academic, and religious segments of society.
Political science – the field concerning the theory and practice of politics and the description and analysis of political systems and political behavior.

Austria (i/ˈɒstriə, ˈɔː-/;German: Österreich [ˈøːstɐˌʁaɪç]), officially the Republic of Austria (German: Republik Österreich,
listen ), is a federal republic and a landlocked country of over 8.66 million people in Central Europe. It is bordered by the Czech Republic and Germany to the north, Hungary and Slovakia to the east, Slovenia and Italy to the south, and Switzerland and Liechtenstein to the west. The territory of Austria covers 83,879 square kilometres (32,386 sq mi). Austria's terrain is highly mountainous, lying within the Alps; only 32% of the country is below 500 metres (1,640 ft), and its highest point is 3,798 metres (12,461 ft). The majority of the population speak local Bavarian dialects of German as their native language, and Austrian German in its standard form is the country's official language. Other local official languages are Hungarian, Burgenland Croatian, and Slovene.
Freedom Party may refer to:
A Foreign Minister or Minister of Foreign Affairs is generally a cabinet minister in charge of a state's foreign policy and relations.
In some nations, such as India, the Foreign Minister is referred to as the Minister for External Affairs or, as in the case of Brazil and of the former Soviet Union, as the Minister of External Relations. In the United States the equivalent to the foreign ministry is called the Department of State, and the equivalent position is known as the Secretary of State. Other common titles may include minister of foreign relations. In many Spanish and Portuguese speaking countries in Latin America, the foreign minister is colloquially called canciller (chancellor).
A foreign minister's powers can vary from government to government. In a classic parliamentary system, a foreign minister can potentially exert significant influence in forming foreign policy but when the government is dominated by a strong prime minister the foreign minister may be limited to playing a more marginal or subsidiary role in determining policy. Similarly, the political powers invested in the foreign minister are often more limited in presidential governments with a strong executive. Since the end of World War II, it has been common for both the foreign minister and defense minister to be part of an inner cabinet (commonly known as a national security council) in order to coordinate defense and diplomatic policy. Although the 19th and early 20th centuries saw many heads of government assume the foreign ministry, this practice has since become uncommon in most developed nations.

This is the first in a series to clarify key populist parties around the continent, who are rapidly gaining ground and popularity. These are exciting times. In the next big election for Europe, Norbert Hofer of the FPO takes on Van Der Bellen, a Green independent for Austrian presidency. Regardless of the result, this is a huge landmark for Austria, as both establishment parties - the SPO and OVP - have been eliminated. For more from Quadriga, go to http://www.dw.com/en/program/quadriga/s-7296-9798 In Austria, Sunday could see a right-wing populist elected to the position of president. The FPÖ'S Norbert Hofer, whose xenophobic slogans have struck a chord with voters, aims to tap into the constitution's potential for authoritarian power. Norbert Hofer could take the reins of government by emergency decree if he wins Sunday's elections. The current state of play augurs well for him. In the first round of voting, the traditionally popular Social Democrats, the SPÖ, and the Conservatives, the ÖVP, got a taste of the electorate's wrath. Chancellor Werner Faymann of the SPÖ resigned. It seems the Alpine republic is lurching to the right as its voters follow a pattern that has emerged throughout Europe. Is ...

I sat down with a young Austrian man to find out what's up in Austria. And we got to talk about pretty much anything - free speech, the refugee crisis, anti-Nazi laws, student politics, student activism, family law, feminism, Eurovision, educational politics, Austrian presidential elections, and so on. The interview was slightly longer (around 100 minutes) - but I cut the uhs and uhms as well as the portions when the interviewee was looking for words he couldn't remember in English and also as he was looking the description of the Feminist Geography class. This is what made it after editing. Enjoy. Support this channel! WIEN, AUSTRIA: Is Europe's most underestimated capital. Sure the city is famous but who wouldn't rather go to Paris, London, Madrid or St. Petersburg given the choice between the five? That would be a mistake. Kunsthistorische Museum in the museumsquartier can take on the St. Petersburg's State Hermitage museum any day of the week. Vienna's many royal palaces also rival those of Europe's other capitals. For a weekend of art and architecture, Wien is second to none.
