A man's leg has been severed and he may lose the other after an accident at a north Queensland airport.
The 56-year-old, a member of the Royal Australian Air Force, was working on the runway at Townsville Airport when he was reportedly hit by a piece of machinery that fell off a truck about 10.40pm on Wednesday.
The Australian Defence Force confirmed in a statement a member of the RAAF was injured in a workplace incident.
"A Royal Australian Air Force member was injured while on duty at RAAF Base Townsville on the evening of Wednesday 16 August 2017," the ADF said.
"The Air Force member's colleagues provided immediate first aid.
"The Queensland Police Service and Queensland Ambulance Service attended the site and the member was transported to hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries."
The man was taken to Townsville Hospital in a serious condition, where it was understood doctors were working to save his other leg.
The ADF said the man was being provided with support.
"Air Force is providing support to the member, their family and colleagues.
"Defence will work with Comcare to investigate the incident.
"For privacy reasons, Defence will not release any further details relating to the member's personal or service history."
