A man has been charged over a wild brawl at a junior football game in Hoppers Crossing that left an umpire injured and forced players to take cover inside their changerooms.

The aftermath of the brawl was broadcast live on Facebook, with adults scuffling and hurling abuse.

Witnesses reported seeing the umpire "run for his life" as angry parents threw punches and chased him off the ground.

Police arrested and charged a 40-year-old Truganina man with affray and two counts of assault on Thursday.

Police allege the man ran onto the Hogans Road grounds and assaulted an umpire.

He has been bailed to appear at the Werribee Magistrates' Court on February 5.

Paramedics were called to the ground to treat the umpire, a man aged in his 30s, about 4.30pm on Sunday.

He had minor injuries to his upper body, but was not taken to hospital, an ambulance spokesman said.

The aftermath of the brawl was broadcast live on Facebook, with a 20-minute video showing adults scuffling and hurling abuse outside the changerooms.

The incident compelled Victoria's Police Chief Commissioner Graham Ashton to issue a stern warn to parents not get involved in what happens on the football field.

This year has been rife with spectator violence, particularly at junior football matches.

In one weekend in June, there were at least three instances of spectators behaving badly at junior football games.

Former North Melbourne player Glenn Archer was charged after one of the incidents, following reports a runner was assaulted by a spectator, but Archer has denied he assaulted anyone.
