The iconic Australian book Possum Magic by Mem Fox has delighted and entertained children and adults alike since 1983. In a master stroke of multi-generational appeal, Woolworths has just released the first of a set of three Possum Magic-themed $2 coins, and they're set to become the next collecting craze just in time for Book Week.
The first coin in the set was emptied into tills on Tuesday, to be given in people's change, but the full set with five extra themed coins can be snagged for $15. It's astoundingly good value for such a beautifully-produced collector's set. Author Mem Fox says she's honoured for her work to be commemorated.
"No one can imagine the level of my excitement at the real magic that's happened, thanks to the Royal Australian Mint and Woolworths. Nothing could be more magical than turning Possum Magic from a book into a collection of coins. I'm dizzy with amazement, and honestly, overcome with gratitude that my beloved story is being immortalised in this way," she said.
The coins feature the artwork of original Possum Magic artist Julie Vivas, who has depicted the book's main character Hush in charming vignettes from the story.
