The iconic Australian book Possum Magic by Mem Fox has delighted and entertained children and adults alike since 1983. In a master stroke of multi-generational appeal, Woolworths has just released the first of a set of three Possum Magic-themed $2 coins, and they're set to become the next collecting craze just in time for Book Week.

The first coin in the set was emptied into tills on Tuesday, to be given in people's change, but the full set with five extra themed coins can be snagged for $15. It's astoundingly good value for such a beautifully-produced collector's set. Author Mem Fox says she's honoured for her work to be commemorated.

"No one can imagine the level of my excitement at the real magic that's happened, thanks to the Royal Australian Mint and Woolworths. Nothing could be more magical than turning Possum Magic from a book into a collection of coins. I'm dizzy with amazement, and honestly, overcome with gratitude that my beloved story is being immortalised in this way," she said.

The coins feature the artwork of original Possum Magic artist Julie Vivas, who has depicted the book's main character Hush in charming vignettes from the story.

The first coin, Sad and invisible Hush can already be found at registers, so you might find one in your hand with the rest of the change. August 22 sees the release of the second coin, Hush can see her tail, and the third coin, Happy Hush is visible again will be released the following week on August 29.

You can savour the suspense at the checkout, to see if you'll get one in your change, or if you don't like hedging your bets on that, simply buy the set at the service desk. For $15 you get a custom coin folder with eight possum-themed coins.

Royal Australian Mint CEO Mr Ross MacDiarmid said; "For 34 years, Australians have read this wonderful story of Hush and Grandma Poss and their whimsical adventures around the country. We are thrilled to be able to immortalise the story for generations to come through this collector coin series."

He also says that waiting to get the coins in your change is the perfect introduction to a classic hobby. "Finding and keeping these coins will give you a taste of coin collecting, one of the oldest and most popular hobbies in the world."

While they're not available online from Woolworths, you can buy the set from Downies.

Well we're sold, and so is the rest of Australia. The coins have already started popping up on Instagram.
