Al (Alec) Debbo (22 June 1924 -- 13 July 2011) was a South African comedian, singer and actor. As one of the most famous artists of his generation, he made an enormous contribution to Afrikaans music and culture.

Alec Debbo, the son of Lebanese parents, was born in Bloemfontein, South Africa. As a child he had to help out in his parents’ general merchandise store. His parents taught him Lebanese and English but he learned Afrikaans at an early age, because Afrikaans was the dominant language in Bloemfontein.[2]
In school concerts he displayed a knack for making people laugh but he did not see comedy as a viable career, so after he matriculated he qualified as a plumber. Singing and comedy remained his hobbies and he performed at functions and weddings. In 1947 everything changed after his friends dared him to participate in a countrywide talent competition, associated with the South African Industries Fair, which he won. As a result he landed his first film role in Die Kaskenades van Dokter Kwak. It lasted only three minutes but it was enough to generate national recognition.

South African slapstick comedy duo Al Debbo and his stocky sidekick Fred Burgers star in another madcap caper, the sequel to Dis Lekker Om Te Lewe. Forced to leave the army at the end of the previous film, Stoffie and Fanie enlist in the navy in Simon´s Town. The two down-on-their-luck performing artists can´t wait to go to sea, so when they are roped in as stewards on a ship headed for Angola, they tell everyone, including a crook who is trying to smuggle stolen diamonds out of the country. Before long, the dilly duo are trying to cope with life on board and life on shore, where they keep on bumping into a pretty girl who wants to divest Stoffie of his suitcase. This comedy culminates in a wonderfully amusing stage scene in which the comedians pretend to be ballerinas to evade a clutch of villains.

This slapstick comedy in Afrikaans hails from the black-and-white heyday of pop-eyed South African funny man Al Debbo. Its spirit is captured by the title, ‘Everything will turn out all right’. We are in the fictional town of Spoggenpoelville, where Mr. Spog and Mr. Poel (Debbo) rule supreme. Though not particularly bright, they run and own everything. To boot, they are the town’s mayor and deputy mayor. But one day two men from Johannesburg throw a spanner in the works. Mr. Brand and Mr. Borelli want to buy a piece of Spoggenpoelville, complete with mineral rights. Spog and Poel say no. To retaliate, the two speculators decide to run for mayor and deputy mayor. Suddenly Spog and Poel must learn how to become politicians, charm the ladies and outwit the villains, all the while trying to evade a clown-like figure who wants to sell them a goldmine.

As one of the most famous artists of his generation he made an enormous contribution to Afrikaner music and culture Alec Debbo, the son of Lebanese parents, was born in Bloemfontein, South Africa. As a child he had to help out in his parents’ general merchandise store. His parents taught him Lebanese and English but he learned Afrikaans at an early age, because Afrikaans was the dominant language in Bloemfontein.[2] In school concerts he displayed a knack for making people laugh but he did not see comedy as a viable career, so after he matriculated he qualified as a plumber. Singing and comedy remained his hobbies and he performed at functions and weddings. In 1947 everything changed after his friends dared him to participate in a countrywide talent competition, associated with the South African Industries Fair, which he won. As a result he landed his first film role in Die Kaskenades van Dokter Kwak. It lasted only three minutes but it was enough to generate national recognition.

Alec Debbo, the son of Lebanese parents, was born in Bloemfontein, South Africa. As a child he had to help out in his parents’ general merchandise store. His parents taught him Lebanese and English but he learned Afrikaans at an early age, because Afrikaans was the dominant language in Bloemfontein.[2]
In school concerts he displayed a knack for making people laugh but he did not see comedy as a viable career, so after he matriculated he qualified as a plumber. Singing and comedy remained his hobbies and he performed at functions and weddings. In 1947 everything changed after his friends dared him to participate in a countrywide talent competition, associated with the South African Industries Fair, which he won. As a result he landed his first film role in Die Kaskenades van Dokter Kwak. It lasted only three minutes but it was enough to generate national recognition.

South African slapstick comedy duo Al Debbo and his stocky sidekick Fred Burgers star in another madcap caper, the sequel to Dis Lekker Om Te Lewe. Forced to leave the army at the end of the previous film, Stoffie and Fanie enlist in the navy in Simon´s Town. The two down-on-their-luck performing artists can´t wait to go to sea, so when they are roped in as stewards on a ship headed for Angola, they tell everyone, including a crook who is trying to smuggle stolen diamonds out of the country. Before long, the dilly duo are trying to cope with life on board and life on shore, where they keep on bumping into a pretty girl who wants to divest Stoffie of his suitcase. This comedy culminates in a wonderfully amusing stage scene in which the comedians pretend to be ballerinas to evade a clutch of villains.

Mr. Brand and Mr. Borelli want to buy a piece of Spoggenpoelville, complete with mineral rights. Spog and Poel say no. To retaliate, the two speculators decide to run for mayor and deputy mayor. South African slapstick comedy duo Al Debbo and his stocky sidekick Fred Burgers star in another madcap caper, the sequel to Dis Lekker Om Te Lewe. Forced to leave the army at the end of the previous film, Stoffie and Fanie enlist in the navy in Simon´s Town. The two down-on-their-luck performing artists can´t wait to go to sea, so when they are roped in as stewards on a ship headed for Angola, they tell everyone, including a crook who is trying to smuggle stolen diamonds out of the country. Papa Francesco ha fatto questa mattina il segno della barba che si allunga nei momenti di noia per descrivere come un religioso può reagire talvolta alle richieste dei suoi superiori. Stava parlando della virtù dell’obbedienza ai partecipanti al Giubileo dei religiosi, nell’Aula Nervi ed ha esclamato: «Certe volte le cose che chiedono i superiori... Che barba!».
«A volte - ha scherzato - il mio linguaggio è povero: debbo usare il linguaggio dei sordomuti». Il Papa, disperato per il calo di vocazioni, ha indicato però come modello ai 4mila consacrati che lo ascoltavano la preghiera di Gesù nel Getsemani: «Padre per favore questo calice no, ma si faccia quello che tu vuoi».
«Siete chiamati a proclamare la realtà di Dio, anzitutto con la vostra vita prima ancora che con le parole». Papa Francesco lo sottolinea ai religiosi, sacerdoti e suore, ricevuti in udienza nell’aula Paolo VI in Vaticano per il Giubileo della vita consacrata, nel discorso consegnato per l’occasione al Cardinale Joao Braz de Aviz. «Se a volte Dio viene rifiutato o emarginato o ignorato, dobbiamo chiederci se forse non siamo stati abbastanza trasparenti, mostrando non il volto di Dio ma piuttosto il nostro», avverte il Pontefice predicando l’osservanza di tre elementi: profezia, prossimità, speranza.
