A man was found with a suspected gunshot wound. Paramedics tried to revive the victim but he died at the scene.

Narre Warren resident Tamara Sykes,18, who lives directly behind the house where the shooting occurred, was inside her home when she heard a series of loud bangs.

She said she and her boyfriend ran into their backyard.

"We thought it might have been random fireworks, but we looked up and didn't seen any fireworks... then we heard another three shots fired," she said. "That's when we knew it wasn't fireworks."

The couple then fled back inside and told her boyfriend's family before they piled into a car and drove to the end of the street.

"We wanted to make sure nothing bad had happened, but by that time the police had already arrived and the road had been blocked off," she said. "There were cops everywhere."

Ms Sykes said the family had been left "shaken up" by the shooting and had been bunkered inside the house.

"Things like this don't usually occur in this estate," she said. "I mean, we see it in movies and on the news and stuff, but it's not a reality until it happens near where you live.

"My boyfriend's brother is only 11 years old and goes to the school within metres of the incident and we have had to not tell him what has happened because he'll be too scared to go outside in fear that something like this would happen to him."

Homicide Squad detectives are at the scene and have urged any witnesses to come forward.

Anyone with information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
