Woman run over by 'her own car' Cable Beach was trapped in swag

A Broome woman in a serious condition after she was run over by a car while sleeping in a swag on Cable Beach is reported to have been run over by her own vehicle.

Libby Gross, 39 had been camping with a group of friends at the popular tourist destination, and had turned in for the night.

She was then seriously injured after she was struck by a Toyota Landcruiser driving on the beach, and was rushed to Broome Hospital for treatment, then flown to Perth by the Royal Flying Doctors Service.

Her sister Pennie Gross told ABC news that she was trapped in her swag for half an hour before she was found.

She's in Royal Perth Hospital being treated for a broken hip.

ABC News reports Ms Gross' sister Penny said the landcruiser belonged to her sister, and that a person known to her had decided to take the vehicle for a spin at around 3:00am.

It's understood Ms Gross's swag had been tied to the Landcruiser's bullbar at the time of the incident.

A 56-year-old man is currently assisting police with their inquiries.

According to the Broome Shire motor vehicles and motorbikes are not permitted above the high water mark, in sand dunes and in lagoon areas, and the speed limit on all beach areas is 15km per hour.

Camping on the beach is also restricted to designated camping grounds, caravan parks and on private properties with permission from the owner.
