Injury wrap: Key players out to prove fitness ahead of round 22

Adelaide captain Taylor Walker and star onballer Rory Sloane will aim to prove their fitness on Wednesday ahead of Friday's AFL blockbuster against Sydney.

The scenario facing Jack Viney should also become clearer, after the Melbourne co-captain was seen on crutches this week at AAMI Park.

Walker is in doubt for the Adelaide Oval clash with the Swans due to a jarred toe, which he suffered in last Saturday's win over Essendon.

Sloane also aggravated an existing knee injury in the same match, but returned to the match and should be available.

There is some doubt about Walker, Adelaide's leading goalkicker this season and fifth in the Coleman Medal with 48.

Swan Josh Kennedy is set to return from two games out because of a hamstring problem.

Young defender Nic Newman hyperextended a knee last weekend in the big win over Fremantle and the Swans are unsure whether he will recover in time for the Crows match.

While Adelaide are top of the ladder, Sydney are the league's form team.

The Swans have won 12 of their past 14 matches and are fifth with two rounds left.

They are breathing down the necks of fourth-placed Richmond and after a dreadful start to the season, are now seen as premiership contenders.

Melbourne will start strong favourites in Sunday's home game against Brisbane at the MCG and a win would confirm their first finals appearance since 2006.

But the sight of Viney on crutches would have Demons fans uneasy.

He needed foot surgery last month to fix a plantar fascia injury and returned earlier than expected.

The tough midfielder has played in Melbourne's past four matches.

An injury report on the club website said it was not uncommon for players to be put in moon boots or crutches the day after a game to remove load on their legs.

Geelong's bid for a top-two spot received a boost when round 22 opponents Collingwood lost emerging midfielder Jordan De Goey to a hip flexor injury.

De Goey is set for surgery after sustaining the injury late in last weekend's loss to Port Adelaide and will miss the rest of the season.

Third-placed Geelong sit two points behind Greater Western Sydney ahead of the team's final-round meeting next week.
