Bolivia (i/bəˈlɪviə/; Spanish: [boˈliβja]; Quechua: Buliwya [bʊlɪwja]; Aymara: Wuliwya [wʊlɪwja]; Guarani: Volívia [ʋoˈliʋja]), officially known as the Plurinational State of Bolivia (Spanish: Estado Plurinacional de Bolivia), is a landlocked country located in western-central South America. It is bordered to the north and east by Brazil, to the southeast by Paraguay, to the south by Argentina, to the southwest by Chile, and to the northwest by Peru. One-third of the country is the Andean mountain range, with its largest city and principal economic centers located in the Altiplano.
Before Spanish colonization, the Andean region of Bolivia was part of the Inca Empire, while the northern and eastern lowlands were inhabited by independent tribes. Spanish conquistadors arriving from Cuzco and Asunción took control of the region in the 16th century. During most of the Spanish colonial period, Bolivia was known as Upper Peru and administered by the Royal Court of Charcas. Spain built its empire in great part upon the silver that was extracted from Bolivia's mines.

Subscribe to VICE News here: http://bit.ly/Subscribe-to-VICE-News The United Nations announced in 2013 that Peru has overtaken Colombia as the world’s top producer of coca, the raw plant material used to manufacture cocaine. For the past two decades, Colombia has been virtually synonymous with cocaine. Now that Peru has become the global epicenter of cocaine production, the Andean nation runs the risk of becoming the world’s next great narco state. The Peruvian government is trying to crack down on the problem by ramping up eradication of coca plants, and devoting military and police resources to interdiction efforts. Despite the response — and a hefty amount of foreign aid devoted to combatting cocaine production — Peruvian coke is being consumed in the nightclubs of Lima and in cities ...

Officials say smuggling generates unemployment because businesses, who pay taxes, cannot match the cost of smuggled goods. In a country where 70 percent of economic activity happens on an informal level, smuggling, money laundering and black marketeering have replaced most of accountable trade.

Why a safe and healthy workplace is important: If a workplace is safe and healthy, everyone can get on with their work effectively and efficiently. In contrast, if a workplace is disorganized and full of hazards, process breakdowns injuries and sickness absences are inevitable. The pain and direct loss of earnings suffered by workers in these circumstances is often matched by reduced productivity at the enterprise. This animation created by the SCORE team in Bolivia illustrates 'SCORE Training Module 5: Safety and Health at Work: A platform for productivity.' This module aims to provide SME participants (both employees and managers) with the knowledge and understanding they need to create and benefit from a safety and health system tailored to the realities in the enterprise.

English/Nat An international human rights group Wednesday released a scathing report on Bolivia's anti-drugs operations. Human Rights Watch accuses the South American special forces of systematically violating the rights of coca leaf growers in the country. But the report also blames the U-S, who pumps more anti-drugs resources into Bolivia than into any other country in the world, for the dismal Bolivian human rights record. Bolivian anti-drug forces have been accused of violating the rights of coca growers. Soldiers, backed by police have gone into scores of small villages in the coca growing regions to harshly enforce a government eradication programme. The annual plan for the eradication of illegal coca plantations was initiated by the Bolivian government in the area of Villa Tunari, Tuesday. 5,000 hectares of irregular crops were eradicated both at the Villa Tunari site and another site in La Asuncion, La Paz state. SOT, Leon de la Torre Krais, Ambassador of the European Union to Bolivia (Spanish): "We are seeing how, according to the figures of the United Nations, the area of cultivation has been reducing over the last years, and we will continue to collaborate with the authorities to endure this trend. As you well know, drugs are a problem not only in Bolivia, as over-supply coca is turned into cocaine and reaches in many cases Europe as well." SOT, Felipe Caceres, Bolivian Deputy Minister of Social Defence (Spanish): "Today is t...
(22 Jun 2012) STORYLINE: A mutiny by rank-and-file Bolivian police demanding wage increases has spread across the nation, with about 4,000 officers occupying barracks. Protesters sacked and set fire to furniture and documents in one police office in La Paz on Friday but the protest otherwise appeared peaceful. It began on Thursday when about 30 police and their wives seized an elite unit's barracks just 100 meters (328 feet) from the presidential palace. President Evo Morales was in the palace on Friday, protected by military police with assault rifles. He has not yet commented on the mutiny. Morales is closer to the military than to the police. Police commanders were not participating in the mutiny. Bolivia's rank-and-file police officers earn an average of 194 US dollars a month,...
If mercenaries (in Bolivia) or right wing military coup leaders terrorize social movements or young democracies by violence, what kind of lives do they lead? This in-class project was shot during an LACC class, Cinema 7. This project was completed within two weeks from winning a class pitch contest to editing and soundtrack. This is the "ROUGH CUT" edition.
Bolivia, a landlocked South American country, holds the promise of discovery for adventurous souls. While pretty Sucre, “La Ciudad Blanca,” is Bolivia’s judicial capital, La Paz is its political capital and also its main tourist hub. On the Mirador at Laikacota, you get a feel for how incredibly high up in the Andes this city sits. Deep in the valley below lies the central Plaza Murillo, home to the most precious buildings: the Presidential Palace, National Congress and Metropolitan Cathedral. Most visitors stay near the Plaza San Francisco, because of its proximity to hidden gems, such as the curious Witches’ Market, the Musical Instrument Museum and the Coca Museum. Around La Paz, you can ride down “El Camino de la Muerte," hike through the lunar landscape of Valle de la Luna and great...

We had privilege of visiting Lake Titicaca from both the Peru and Bolivia. The question we're often asked is which side is better? The easy answer is that it is really worth visiting both side of lago titicaca. The following is a travel guide for our extended stays on both sides of Lake Titicaca. On the Peruvian side we started our journey off in Puno where we boarded a boat heading out to Uros Island where we met people still living on the floating reed islands. We then went further onward for a home stay. On the Bolivian journey we visited Isla del Sol from Copacabana as a day trip hiking all over the island before heading back to Copacabana to visit markets. Bolivias burning down tonight
Down by the cove its the way you called them over the cliff
Step from the fort we'll be there
Down by the tollway you tried to call me away when I've seen what it means to them
You can say you warned them to stay down tonight
But I can't wait
Are you down for the ride or will you crawl back before they die
Sympathy is tied to the ground
Cause sympathy now is not what they need
Whether rise or fall
Remain
