Novosibirsk (Russian: Новосиби́рск; IPA: [nəvəsʲɪˈbʲirsk]) is the third most populous city in Russia after Moscow and St. Petersburg and the most populous city in Asian Russia, with a population of 1,473,754 as of the 2010 Census. It is the administrative center of Novosibirsk Oblast as well as of the Siberian Federal District. The city is located in the southwestern part of Siberia on the banks of the Ob River adjacent to the Ob River Valley, near the large water reservoir formed by the dam of the Novosibirsk Hydro Power Plant, and occupies an area of 502.1 square kilometers (193.9 sq mi).
Novosibirsk, founded in 1893 at the future site of a Trans-Siberian Railway bridge crossing the great Siberian river of Ob, first received the name Novonikolayevsk (Новониколаевск), in honor both of Saint Nicholas and of the reigning Tsar Nicholas II in place of Krivoshchekovskaya village, which was founded in 1696. The bridge was completed in the spring of 1897, making the new settlement the regional transport hub. The importance of the city further increased with the completion of the Turkestan-Siberia Railway in the early 20th century. The new railway connected Novosibirsk to Central Asia and the Caspian Sea.
You know, cities are just like people: their backgrounds are different, their prospects are not the same, and in the course of time they change so much, you can barely recognize any traits from their early days when they reach a ripe old age. So, one has to be very perceptive and observant to discover a city's true character. Let us take a closer look at some of the historical facts that might give you a clearer picture of the city of Novosibirsk and its people. Firstly, Novosibirsk must be the only city in Russia that has been renamed so many times. The first settlement, which was established by railway workers in 1893, was called Krivoshekovo. This is a combination of two Russian words: "krivoy" (uneven) and "sheky" (cheeks), and the choice of this name suggests that the founders had a p...

Convenience stores in Russia are pretty much the same as they are in the USA. We walked to one near the hotel to get some water and a couple other items. Then back to the hotel. Recorded with Pivothead DVR eyewwear.

After a long ride on the rails, we arrive to Tomsk. There we pay tribute to the Anton Chekov statue that was created in memory of his visit years ago. After a day of exploring the city, we then proceed to Novosibirsk during a celebration at the main square for the Children's games. Siberia in Russia is huge! The distances are so insane you really have no idea before you try to move from one city to the next. Doing so by train often takes at least one night. After a week or so on rail it was time to hit the road. The cities of Novosibirsk and Altai are 11 hours apart by car. That didn't stop me and a friend from attempting the drive on a whim with zero planing. As mentioned, in this part of Russia the distances are huge but the scenery is quite picturesque. The nature and wildlife is beautiful. Siberia was a very enjoyable part of the country and I would like to visit again. Preferably during the winter when the temperature goes down to -50 celsius!
This is a time-lapse through the city of Novosibirsk in western Siberia, Russia.

Four hundred miles west of Moscow is St. Petersburg, Russia. A striking city resting on the banks of the Neva River, St. Petersburg has long been a draw for lovers of architecture, as St. Petersburg tours often begin with the city's legendary structures. Enter a world of towering cathedrals, palaces, and gardens, many of them set down by the order of Peter the Great in the 18th century. As the decades passed, later members of Russian royalty added to the city's opulence by constructing additional marvels. Walk through the Palace Square, located in the heart of St. Petersburg and home of the Winter Palace, the sprawling home of Catherine the Great. Next, pay a visit to St. Isaac's Cathedral and its gold-plated dome, which glitters in the sunshine. If you walk to the top of its dome, you wi...

■ PODCAST: https://www.patreon.com/haraldbaldr Kiev, Ukraine's capital, has seen more hardship over the past 100 years than any other city in Europe. Yet the city still stands proud on both sides of the banks of the river Dnipro. For the past 45 days I've been studying Russian here. This film shows are some of the amazing people I've met and things I've seen over that period. From hardworking normal citizens to great tourist attractions. From the sublime beaches along the river Dnipro to fantastic church art. These clips hopefully serves to give people and impression of what Kiev is truly like. Kiev is paradise on earth during both summer and winter in terms of the open green spaces scattered all over the city. Towards the end of this film I go through some of the tragic history Kiev ...
