In January 2011 we had a very nice houseboat experience in the Kerala Backwaters at Vembanadu Lake in Kerala, India.
Since we never have been there before, we booked the boat simply via Internet, and found luckily this specific one. The crew Sajeev (Captain), Eldhose (Asst. Captain) and Tomey (Cook) did their very best to prepare a fantastique journey for us during the 22 hours on board.

Mit dem Wohnmobil die Welt erkunden ist schön. Und irgendwie dachte ich, mit dem Hausboot ist das wohl ähnlich. Ist aber doch völlig anders ... ;-)
Wir dachten schon lange dran, mal eine Backwaters-Tour in Kerala zu machen, kamen aber irgendwie nie dazu - bis jetzt. Schön blöd - das hätten wir nämlich schon viel öfter machen können, und sollen ... ;-)
Wir haben im Internet recherchiert und dann - praktisch ins Blaue hinein - was gebucht. Und, Dusel muss sein, einen Volltreffer gelandet: die Tour war schlicht genial. Das Boot war super in Schuss, die Mannschaft wirklich ausgesprochen angenehm, und die Route hat genau unseren Vorstellungen entsprochen. Als Tüpfelchen auf dem i gab es dann auch noch Vollmond dazu - also einfach alles perfekt!
Klar, man kann sowas über Youtube nicht richtig rüberbringen, die Fülle der Eindrücke lässt sich nicht einfach so per Video kommunizieren - so eine Tour muss man einfach selbst erleben. Aber wenigstens ein paar Eindrücke unserer Hausbootreise sollte das Video hier schon vermitteln - und wer mehr auf Technik und so steht, kann sich ja auch das andere Video reinziehen, das mit den vielen Hausbooten, die wir sonst noch gesehen haben (selbstverständlich habe ich nicht alle aufgenommen, die wir gesehen haben, aber bestimmt die Hälfte oder so ...).

Kumarakom
Kumarakom is a popular tourism destination located near the city of Kottayam (16 kilometres (10 mi)), in Kerala, India, famous for its backwater tourism. It is set in the backdrop of the Vembanad Lake, the largest freshwater lake in the state of Kerala.
History
Kumarakom was within the jurisdiction of Thekkumcore King during those period and it was also usual to have fighting and competitions among local Kings. Chundan Vallom and Veppu Vallom was widely used among the local kings for their lightning attacks and fighting in the central Travancore. During those days Vembanad Lake was a dangerous Zone, therefore the Thekkumcore King kept enough soldiers in Kumarakom and also he constructed a Fort on the entrance of Kottathodu in Kumarakom.
Soldiers were kept in certain areas of Kumarakom for the protection of enemy attacks and those places are still called as Padakkalam, Padanilam etc., in Kumarakom. We can still see the remains of the wall of Six feet breadth of the above said fort, near the village office of Kumarakom.

Kerala
Kerala (/ˈkɛrələ/), historically known as Keralam, is a state in South India on the Malabar coast. It was formed on 1 November 1956 following the States Reorganisation Act by combining Malayalam-speaking regions. Spread over 38,863 km2 (15,005 sq mi), it is bordered by Karnataka to the north and northeast, Tamil Nadu to the east and south, and the Lakshadweep Sea to the west. With 33,387,677 inhabitants as per the 2011 Census, Kerala is the thirteenth largest state by population and is divided into 14 districts with the capital being Thiruvananthapuram. Malayalam is the most widely spoken and the official language of the state.
The region was a prominent spice exporter since 3000 BCE. The Chera Dynasty was the first prominent kingdom based in Kerala, though it frequently struggled against attacks by the neighbouring Cholas and Pandyas. In the 15th century, the spice trade attracted Portuguese traders to Kerala, and paved the way for the European colonisation of India. After independence, Travancore and Cochin joined the Republic of India and Travancore-Cochin was given the status of a state in 1949. In 1956, Kerala state was formed by merging Malabar district, Travancore-Cochin (excluding four southern taluks), and the taluk of Kasargod, South Kanara.

In January 2011 we had a very nice houseboat experience in the Kerala Backwaters at Vembanadu Lake in Kerala, India. Mit dem Wohnmobil die Welt erkunden ist schön. Und irgendwie dachte ich, mit dem Hausboot ist das wohl ähnlich. Ist aber doch völlig anders ... ;-)
Wir dachten schon lange dran, mal eine Backwaters-Tour in Kerala zu machen, kamen aber irgendwie nie dazu - bis jetzt. Schön blöd - das hätten wir nämlich schon viel öfter machen können, und sollen ... ;-)
Wir haben im Internet recherchiert und dann - praktisch ins Blaue hinein - was gebucht. Und, Dusel muss sein, einen Volltreffer gelandet: die Tour war schlicht genial. Das Boot war super in Schuss, die Mannschaft wirklich ausgesprochen angenehm, und die Route hat genau unseren Vorstellungen entsprochen. Als Tüpfelchen auf dem i gab es dann auch noch Vollmond dazu - also einfach alles perfekt!
Klar, man kann sowas über Youtube nicht richtig rüberbringen, die Fülle der Eindrücke lässt sich nicht einfach so per Video kommunizieren - so eine Tour muss man einfach selbst erleben. Aber wenigstens ein paar Eindrücke unserer Hausbootreise sollte das Video hier schon vermitteln - und wer mehr auf Technik und so steht, kann sich ja auch das andere Video reinziehen, das mit den vielen Hausbooten, die wir sonst noch gesehen haben (selbstverständlich habe ich nicht alle aufgenommen, die wir gesehen haben, aber bestimmt die Hälfte oder so ...).

Kumarakom Houseboat Trip - Kerala Backwaters
In January 2011 we had a very nice houseboat experience in the Kerala Backwaters at Vembanadu Lake in Kerala, India. Since we never have been there before, we booked the boat simply via Internet, and found luckily this specific one. The crew Sajeev (Captain), Eldhose (Asst. Captain) and Tomey (Cook) did their very best to prepare a fantastique journey for us during the 22 hours on board. Enjoy our impressions there! Houseboat Cruise in Kumarakom, Kerala (day trip during monsoon & rains)
Here is a video of our recent day trip in a house boat in Kumarakom. We hired a boat for day cruise from a houseboat service provider called "Kerala Houseboat retreat". It was our first houseboat experience in the heavy rains of monsoons. According to the operators, houseboats are usually safe even during heavy rains even though water gets in all open areas. We all enjoyed our cruise in the rains,which was a different experience altogether. Even though rains are not a big threat for the cruises, heavy wind may become dangerous. When the wind started, our boat staff pulled the boat to safe canals, which is the normal practice. Das Boot war super in Schuss, die Mannschaft wirklich ausgesprochen angenehm, und die Route hat genau unseren Vorstellungen entsprochen. Als Tüpfelchen auf dem i gab es dann auch noch Vollmond dazu - also einfach alles perfekt!
Klar, man kann sowas über Youtube nicht richtig rüberbringen, die Fülle der Eindrücke lässt sich nicht einfach so per Video kommunizieren - so eine Tour muss man einfach selbst erleben. Aber wenigstens ein paar Eindrücke unserer Hausbootreise sollte das Video hier schon vermitteln - und wer mehr auf Technik und so steht, kann sich ja auch das andere Video reinziehen, das mit den vielen Hausbooten, die wir sonst noch gesehen haben (selbstverständlich habe ich nicht alle aufgenommen, die wir gesehen haben, aber bestimmt die Hälfte oder so ...).

In January 2011 we had a very nice houseboat experience in the Kerala Backwaters at Vembanadu Lake in Kerala, India.
Since we never have been there before, we booked the boat simply via Internet, and found luckily this specific one. The crew Sajeev (Captain), Eldhose (Asst. Captain) and Tomey (Cook) did their very best to prepare a fantastique journey for us during the 22 hours on board.

Mit dem Wohnmobil die Welt erkunden ist schön. Und irgendwie dachte ich, mit dem Hausboot ist das wohl ähnlich. Ist aber doch völlig anders ... ;-)
Wir dachten schon lange dran, mal eine Backwaters-Tour in Kerala zu machen, kamen aber irgendwie nie dazu - bis jetzt. Schön blöd - das hätten wir nämlich schon viel öfter machen können, und sollen ... ;-)
Wir haben im Internet recherchiert und dann - praktisch ins Blaue hinein - was gebucht. Und, Dusel muss sein, einen Volltreffer gelandet: die Tour war schlicht genial. Here is a video of our recent day trip in a house boat in Kumarakom. We hired a boat for day cruise from a houseboat service provider called "Kerala Houseboat retreat". It was our first houseboat experience in the heavy rains of monsoons. According to the operators, houseboats are usually safe even during heavy rains even though water gets in all open areas. We all enjoyed our cruise in the rains,which was a different experience altogether.
Even though rains are not a big threat for the cruises, heavy wind may become dangerous. When the wind started, our boat staff pulled the boat to safe canals, which is the normal practice.
