Meiji Shrine (明治神宮, Meiji Jingū), located in Shibuya, Tokyo, is the Shinto shrine that is dedicated to the deified spirits of Emperor Meiji and his wife, Empress Shōken. The shrine does not contain the emperor's grave, which is located at Fushimi-momoyama south of Kyoto.
After the emperor's death in 1912, the Japanese Diet passed a resolution to commemorate his role in the Meiji Restoration. An iris garden in an area of Tokyo where Emperor Meiji and Empress Shōken had been known to visit was chosen as the building's location.
Construction began in 1915 under Itō Chūta, and the shrine was built in the traditional nagare-zukuri style, using primarily Japanese cypress and copper. The building of the shrine was a national project, mobilizing youth groups and other civic associations from throughout Japan, who contributed labor and funding. It was formally dedicated in 1920, completed in 1921, and its grounds officially finished by 1926. Until 1946, the Meiji Shrine was officially designated one of the Kanpei-taisha (官幣大社), meaning that it stood in the first rank of government supported shrines.
Tokyo (東京, Tōkyō, "Eastern Capital") (Japanese: [toːkjoː], English /ˈtoʊki.oʊ/), officially Tokyo Metropolis (東京都, Tōkyō-to), is one of the 47 prefectures of Japan, and is both the capital and largest city of Japan. The Greater Tokyo Area is the most populous metropolitan area in the world. It is the seat of the Emperor of Japan and the Japanese government. Tokyo is in the Kantō region on the southeastern side of the main island Honshu and includes the Izu Islands and Ogasawara Islands. Formerly known as Edo, it has been the de facto seat of government since 1603 when Shogun Tokugawa Ieyasu made the city his headquarters. It officially became the capital after Emperor Meiji moved his seat to the city from the old capital of Kyoto in 1868; at that time Edo was renamed Tokyo. Tokyo Metropolis was formed in 1943 from the merger of the former Tokyo Prefecture (東京府, Tōkyō-fu) and the city of Tokyo (東京市, Tōkyō-shi).
Yoyogi Park (代々木公園, Yoyogi kōen) is a large park in Tokyo, Japan, located adjacent to Harajuku Station and Meiji Shrine in Shibuya.
Yoyogi Park stands on the site from where the first successful powered aircraft flight in Japan took place by Captain Yoshitoshi Tokugawa on 19 December 1910. The area later became an army parade ground. From September 1945, the site housed the military barracks known as the "Washington Heights" for U.S. officers during the Allied occupation of Japan.
In 1964, the area was used for the Tokyo Olympics housing the main athletes village and the Yoyogi National Gymnasium. The distinctive building, which was designed by Kenzo Tange, hosted the swimming and diving, with an annex for the basketball.
In 1967 most of the area north of the gymnasium complex and south of Meiji Shrine was turned into Yoyogi Park.
The park is a popular Tokyo destination. On Sundays, it is especially busy when it is used as a gathering place for Japanese rock music fans, jugglers, comedians, martial arts clubs, cosplayers and other subculture and hobby groups. In spring, thousands of people visit the park to enjoy the cherry blossom during hanami. The landscaped park has picnic areas, bike paths, cycle rentals and public sport courts.

Explore the culture of Japanese shrine visits with me as I go on my first-ever Hatsumōde (初詣) - the first shrine visit of the new year, to Meiji Shrine in Tokyo. I learned how to wash my hands at the Temizuya (water basin area), how to pray (bowing, clapping), and all of the other things to do when visiting a shrine such as buying good luck charms and writing on the ema (wooden plaque for wish-making). ■ Additional info Check out the video where I talk about omikuji (fotune) http://youtu.be/MUD377RrMZs Check out what Meiji Shrine was like on January 1st of this year! http://youtu.be/L060VScwGNQ See how to properly wash your hands and pray (not the greatest quality, but you'll get it) http://youtu.be/pCJ7mfW3aTg ■ Follow me twitter: http://twitter.com/Japanagos vine: https://vine.co...

Learn about the Meiji Jingu, one of the city's most important Shinto shrines, in this travel video. Tip: When you enter or exit through the entrance gates, called torii, be sure to bow as a sign of respect. Shinto shrines hold a special importance in Japanese culture, and there are many of them in Tokyo. One of the most important Shinto shrines is Meiji Shrine. Having been built in 1920, this is not the oldest Shinto shrine in Japan. It does not derive its importance from age, but from the spirits it is dedicated to. Since it was too early to call it a day after coming back from Hakone, we proceeded to Tokyo Station after having settled down in Ikebukuro. The architectural design of Tokyo Station look stunning on the inside as well as on the outside. The next day, we started off to Harajuku. The first place we went to check out was Meiji Shrine, which the entrance was located next to the station. To see more of the 'Harajuku culture', Takeshita dori is a must visit place! The large intersection of Shibuya is the prominent landmark of the place, I had to cross the road several times to take different angle shots. At last, we went ahead to Ginza. An ideal place to shop for high end brands. Fujiya Bakery at the end of the street was worth a visit, it is a cute and petite bakery with Peko chan as its main...
