Anthony Rex Hunter (born 23 August 1943) is a British-American biologist who is a Professor of Biology at the Salk Institute for Biological Studies and the University of California, San Diego. His research publications list his name as Tony Hunter.
Anthony R. Hunter was born in 1943 in the United Kingdom and educated at Felsted, prior to Christ's College at Cambridge University.
He received a Ph.D. from the University of Cambridge, in Cambridge, England and held a fellowship at Christ's College in Cambridge (1968–1971) and (1973–1975). From 1971 to 1973, he was a research associate of the Salk Institute for Biological Studies in La Jolla, California. He was then assistant professor 1975–78, associate professor 1978–82, professor 1982 onwards and since 2008 director of the Salk Institute Cancer Center. He also sits on the Selection Committee for Life Science and Medicine which chooses winners of the Shaw Prize.
Dr. Hunter is one of the foremost recognized leaders in the field of cell growth control, growth factor receptors and their signal transduction pathways.
The Salk Institute for Biological Studies is an independent, non-profit, scientific research institute located in La Jolla, California. It was founded in 1960 by Jonas Salk, the developer of the polio vaccine; among the founding consultants were Jacob Bronowski and Francis Crick. Building did not start until spring of 1962. The institute consistently ranks among the top institutions in the US in terms of research output and quality in the life sciences. In 2004, the Times Higher Education Supplement ranked Salk as the world's top biomedicine research institute, and in 2009 it was ranked number one globally by ScienceWatch in the neuroscience and behavior areas.
The institute employs 850 researchers in 60 research groups and focuses its research in three areas: molecular biology and genetics; neurosciences; and plant biology. Research topics include cancer, diabetes, birth defects, Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, AIDS, and the neurobiology of American Sign Language. The March of Dimes provided the initial funding and continues to support the institute. Current research is funded by a variety of organizations, such as the NIH, the HHMI and private organizations such as Paris-based Ipsen and the Waitt Family Foundation. In addition, the internally administered Innovation Grants Program encourages cutting-edge high-risk research. The institute appointed genome biologist Eric Lander and stem cell biologist Irving Weissman as non-resident fellows in November 2009.
Tony is a short form of Anthony or Antonio. It may refer to:
People known by the single name, Tony:
A noun (from Latin nōmen, literally meaning "name") is a word that functions as the name of some specific thing or set of things, such as living creatures, objects, places, actions, qualities, states of existence, or ideas.Linguistically, a noun is a member of a large, open part of speech whose members can occur as the main word in the subject of a clause, the object of a verb, or the object of a preposition.
Lexical categories (parts of speech) are defined in terms of the ways in which their members combine with other kinds of expressions. The syntactic rules for nouns differ from language to language. In English, nouns are those words which can occur with articles and attributive adjectives and can function as the head of a noun phrase.
Word classes (parts of speech) were described by Sanskrit grammarians from at least the 5th century BC. In Yāska's Nirukta, the noun (nāma) is one of the four main categories of words defined.
The Ancient Greek equivalent was ónoma (ὄνομα), referred to by Plato in the Cratylus dialog, and later listed as one of the eight parts of speech in The Art of Grammar, attributed to Dionysius Thrax (2nd century BC). The term used in Latin grammar was nōmen. All of these terms for "noun" were also words meaning "name". The English word noun is derived from the Latin term, through the Anglo-Norman noun.

Plot: Three girl friends, residents in the peaceful community of Crystaldale, get together on Halloween night to watch the latest episode of their favorite series: Chosen Ones. In this tribute to film within film, the thin line between reality and fiction becomes thinner and thinner until reaching undreamed-of limits, culminating in a disquieting nightmare, a nightmare that waking up from, doesn't always mean it's over.

Plot: Tony Hunter, a famous singer/dancer movie star, is feeling washed up and old hat (old top hat, tie and tails to be exact). The reporters are out for Ava Gardner, not him. But his old friends Lily and Les Martin have an idea for a funny little Broadway show and he agrees to do it. But things begin to get out of hand, when bigshot "artistic" director/producer/star Jeffrey Cordova joins the production, proclaims it's a modernistic Faust and insists on hiring a prima ballerina, Gabrielle Gerard, to star opposite Tony, and it's hate at first sight. And her jealous choreographer isn't helping to ease the tension. The show is doomed by pretentiousness. But romance, a "let's put on a show" epiphany, and a triumphant opening are waiting in the wings. After all, this is a musical comedy!

His lab has made significant contributions in the area of signal transduction, how signals that stimulate or rein in growth are routed within a cell. In 1979, his lab discovered that phosphate can be attached to tyrosine residues in proteins. This seminal discovery opened the door to the study of tyrosine kinases and their role in signal transduction, and in cell growth and development, as well as to their role in cancer and other human diseases. This knowledge already has resulted in a new approach to cancer...

Tony Hunter of the Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service tells us at the FSS Congress 2015 about a safer way to fight fires. He says: “We expect everyone who works for Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service to strive to make not only the public of Greater Manchester safer, but also make those firefighters who risk their lives everyday safer” Changing risks and demands on firefighters ask for better gear to fight fires, such as a Ultra High Pressure Cold Cutting System. Tony will tell us more about this and other innovative extinguishing systems. The 8th annual congress Fire Safety & Science (FSS) will be organized by the IFV together with Underwriters Laboratories (UL) from the United States. beneath the waters... the village capel celyn. this village in wales was submerged, against much protest and struggle by its inhabitants, in order to accomodate a resevoir. this is a lament for the loss of capel celyn, memories now held beneath the water.
