South Jersey comprises the southern portions of the U.S. state of New Jersey between the lower Delaware River and the Atlantic Ocean. The designation is a colloquial one, reflecting not only geographical but perceived cultural differences from the northern part of the state, with no official definition.
New Jersey is sandwiched between the two large cities of New York in the northeast and Philadelphia in the southwest; Benjamin Franklin called the state "a barrel tapped at both ends".South Jersey may be defined geographically as the area below Interstate 195, in particular the "lower eight counties of New Jersey", whereas North Jersey is the area above "Central Jersey". Culturally, South Jersey is defined as the area in New Jersey within the influence of the Philadelphia metropolitan area (also known as the Delaware Valley), in contrast to the rest of New Jersey, located within the New York metropolitan area.
Burlington, Camden and Gloucester counties have several older streetcar towns, and many residents commute to Philadelphia. The Courier-Post daily newspaper, which refers to itself as "South Jersey's Newspaper" is based in Camden County. It covers all of South Jersey, but focuses primarily on these three counties. The Gloucester County Times based in the city of Woodbury, however, is the principal newspaper for that county. Salem County and to lesser extents lower Gloucester County and upper Cumberland County serve as residential communities for the industries (mainly petro-chemical) in New Castle County, Delaware. The Atlantic shore areas, in particular Atlantic City in Atlantic County, New Jersey and Cape May have a distinct economy centered on tourism. Cape May has the distinction of being geographically as far south as Washington, D.C., thus giving another sense to the name South Jersey.
Jersey (/ˈdʒɜːrzi/, French: [ʒɛʁzɛ]; Jèrriais: Jèrri [ʒɛri]), officially the Bailiwick of Jersey (French: Bailliage de Jersey; Jèrriais: Bailliage dé Jèrri), is a Crown dependency of the United Kingdom, a possession of the Crown in right of Jersey, off the coast of Normandy, France. The bailiwick consists of the island of Jersey, along with surrounding uninhabited islands and rocks collectively named Les Dirouilles, Les Écréhous, Les Minquiers, Les Pierres de Lecq, and other reefs. Jersey was part of the Duchy of Normandy, whose dukes went on to become kings of England from 1066. After Normandy was lost by the kings of England in the thirteenth century, and the ducal title surrendered to France, Jersey and the other Channel Islands remained attached to the English crown.
Jersey is a self-governing parliamentary democracy under a constitutional monarchy, with its own financial, legal and judicial systems, and the power of self-determination.
The island of Jersey is the largest of the Channel Islands. Although the Bailiwicks of Jersey and Guernsey are often referred to collectively as the Channel Islands, the "Channel Islands" are not a constitutional or political unit. Jersey has a separate relationship to its Crown from the other Crown dependencies of Guernsey and the Isle of Man, although all three Crowns are held by the monarch of the United Kingdom. It is not part of the United Kingdom, and has an international identity separate from that of the UK, but the United Kingdom is constitutionally responsible for the defence of Jersey. The Commission have confirmed in a written reply to the European Parliament in 2003 that Jersey is within the Union as a European Territory for whose external relationships the United Kingdom is responsible. Jersey is not fully part of the European Union but has a special relationship with it, notably being treated as within the European Community for the purposes of free trade in goods.
New Jersey is a state in the Northeastern and Middle Atlantic regions of the United States. It is bordered on the north and east by New York, on the southeast and south by the Atlantic Ocean, on the west by Pennsylvania, and on the southwest by Delaware. New Jersey is the fourth-smallest state, but the 11th-most populous and the most densely populated of the 50 United States. New Jersey lies entirely within the combined statistical areas of New York City and Philadelphia and is the second-wealthiest U.S. state by median household income as of 2014.
New Jersey was inhabited by Native Americans for more than 2,800 years, with historical tribes such as the Lenape along the coast. In the early 17th century, the Dutch and the Swedes made the first European settlements. The English later seized control of the region, naming it the Province of New Jersey after the largest of the Channel Islands, Jersey, and granting it as a colony to Sir George Carteret and John Berkeley, 1st Baron Berkeley of Stratton. New Jersey was the site of several decisive battles during the American Revolutionary War in the 18th century.
South is a noun, adjective, or adverb indicating direction or geography. It is one of the four cardinal directions or compass points. South is the polar opposite of north and is perpendicular to east and west.
The word south comes from Old English sūþ, from earlier Proto-Germanic *sunþaz ("south"), possibly related to the same Proto-Indo-European root that the word sun derived from.
By convention, the bottom side of a map is south, although reversed maps exist that defy this convention. To go south using a compass for navigation, set a bearing or azimuth of 180°. Alternatively, in the Northern Hemisphere outside the tropics, the Sun will be roughly in the south at midday.
True south is the direction towards the southern end of the axis about which the earth rotates, called the South Pole. The South Pole is located in Antarctica. Magnetic south is the direction towards the south magnetic pole, some distance away from the south geographic pole.
Roald Amundsen, from Norway, was the first to reach the South Pole, on 14 December 1911, after Ernest Shackleton from the UK was forced to turn back some distance short.

Some summertime action in South Jersey on 7/12/16. Jude and I went down to try for mainly Triggers and Sharks, catching bait was productive and there were some small triggers and fluke hanging around the inlet rocks. The sharks were semi cooperative, but really didn't start biting until a couple hours after dark. Once it started it was quick action, landed 5 before running out of bait. The rod/reel I used for the inlet bait/triggers was a 7'4" G. Loomis pro green medium heavy fast action, paired with a shimano sustain fe 4000. Rod/reel for the sharks is a 12' Star Stellar 20-40lb line 3-10oz lure, with a shimano spheros 14000fb

A line of severe thunderstorms crossed New Jersey from south to north on June 24. Tornado Warnings were posted in two areas including parts of Burlington County. Nearly a dozen utility poles were knocked down in Browns Mills, by the storm. This video captures a transformer on the ground sparking. (Video by Jasmine Rodqiquez and Troy Weal) New to the page? One family in South Jersey says they're lucky to be alive after a terrifying incident while crossing the Middle Thorofare Bridge which connects Wildwood and Cape May.
Host Marianne Aleardi explores a wilderness survival school in the Pine Barrens.
This is a classic NJ ghost town with 7 or 8 cellar holes and a packing house still remaining. I was told that there was a controlled burn done in the last week so I wanted to take a look for myself. As you can see the tall grass is all gone now, leaving the cellar holes exposed, It looks like some of the cellar holes have been filled in as well.
January 7th - February 1st, 2017. Lots of interesting things happened in the railroad world around here in the last month. The SMS moved the 2003 (a former PRSL GP38) to their New York operations. The engine was sent down here from their NY ops in 2013 to get rebuilt. After the shakedown runs, it was sent to work crude oil trains in the Sunoco facility in Westville during the Bakken oil boom. When the oil business abruptly stopped, the unit sat idle in the plant awhile before finally being sent out on the train we'll see, Q418. The NS 8098 Conrail heritage unit made it's first appearance in South Jersey on the night of January 30th, leading 38G. I believe it was the 18th out of 20 heritage units to make it here. On the night of Jan. 14th into the morning of the 15th, MM14 m...

Over the months of March & April 2015, I was able to get out multiple times to shoot the Southern Railroad of New Jersey, or SRNJ, in action. This small SJ shortline is based out of Winslow, NJ, operating on New Jersey Transits Atlantic City Line to Pleasantville, the Salem Branch from Salem-Swedesboro, or the Southern Industrial around Winslow. This video shows all of SRNJ's unique service, including local freight to Pleasantville, an SASB to Swedesboro, empty stone trains from Pleasantville after being unloaded, and a loaded stone train being shoved to Winslow Hotmix, a move that only happens a few times per year. All of the operable locomotives during the time these videos were shot are seen here, including Alco M420s 800, 3517 & 3578, EMD GP9 100, & EMD GP10 102. Locations and train sy...

As the summer months began, we found ourselves trackside along the trackage in southern new jersey which is owned and operated by Conrail. during the month of June, M.o.W crews worked diligently to replace crossings as well as tracks that were in bad need of replacement or repair. In this video 8 trains are featured including CA-11 shortly after M.o.W crews replaced the rail at Cooper Street in Woodbury, NJ. On the last Tuesday of August I made a trip down to South Jersey as I had been talking to Jacob (SJRailroader31) about visiting him and seeing his local trains down south since early May of this year. Finally I had the chance to go and come through on my word, so this was our adventure around the area. Kicking off the day after about a 2-hour drive down I-95, we'd start in Pleasantville while catching up with SRNJ train WJPV coming up to their customer at Peter Lumber. After watching them head in to make a drop off and pick up, and a quick chat with the crew, we'd head down the road to catch them two more times, being at Franklin Blvd & Doughty Rd. Making it a 3-catch chase to start. We'd then head over to their next customer, Tri County Lumber, to wait and watch them switch cars out the...
