Around midnight on May 3, Dana Seetahal, a prominent attorney and former senator in Trinidad and Tobago, had just left a casino in the capital of Port of Spain when her vehicle was stopped by another car blocking the road. A van pulled up alongside and let loose a burst of gunfire, killing her in a well orchestrated hit.
Her murder was one of approximately 170 that have occurred in the Caribbean nation so far this year, putting it on course for one of the highest murder rates in the world. The country saw only 93 murders in 1999. Last year, there were 407.
VICE News visited the slums of Port of Spain and spoke with police, activists, community leaders, and gangsters to understand the country's decade-plus spike in killings. Many of the murders are attributed to ruthless and politically connected street gangs who control territories that are sometimes no larger than a city block. The gangs fight over lucrative government contracts meant to provide social services and combat unemployment.
But gang violence is merely a symptom of a bigger problem. Trinidad has become an important stop for drugs headed to West Africa and the United States. Many observers point to "the big fish" — the nameless political and business elites who are behind drug trafficking and the culture of endemic corruption and murder that come with it. They are accused of turning a country rich in oil and gas deposits into their own personal narco-state, fostering impunity through a web of bribes and murders. Unlike the profits from the energy industry, however, this phenomenon trickles all the way down to the street level.

Trinidad
Trinidad (Spanish: "Trinity") is the larger and more populous of the two major islands and numerous landforms which make up the island nation of Trinidad and Tobago. The island lies 11 km (6.8 mi) off the northeastern coast of Venezuela and sits on the continental shelf of South America. Though part of the South American continent, from a socio-economic standpoint it is often referred to as the southernmost island in the Caribbean. With an area of 4,768 km2 (1,841 sq mi)
Many believe the original name for the island in the Arawaks' language was "Iëre" which meant "Land of the Humming Bird". Some believe that "Iere" was actually a mispronunciation or corruption by early colonists of the Arawak word "Kairi" which simply means "Island". Christopher Columbus renamed it "La Isla de la Trinidad" ("The Island of the Trinity"), fulfilling a vow he had made before setting out on his third voyage of exploration.
History
Caribs and Arawaks lived in Trinidad long before Christopher Columbus encountered the islands on his third voyage in 1498. Tobago changed hands between the British, French, Dutch and Courlanders, but eventually ended up in British hands. Trinidad remained Spanish until 1797, but it was largely settled by French colonists from the French Caribbean, especially Martinique. In 1889 the two islands became a single British Crown colony. Trinidad and Tobago obtained self-governance in 1958 and independence from the United Kingdom in 1962.

Trinidad and Tobago 
i/ˈtrɪnᵻˌdæd ənd toʊˈbeɪɡoʊ/, officially the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago, is a twin island country situated off the northern edge of South America mainland, lying 11 kilometres (6 mi) just off the coast of northeastern Venezuela and 130 kilometres (81 mi) south of Grenada. Bordering the Caribbean to the north, it shares maritime boundaries with other nations including Barbados to the northeast, Grenada to the northwest, Guyana to the southeast, and Venezuela to the south and west. The country covers an area of 5,128 square kilometres (1,980 sq mi) and consists of two main islands, Trinidad and Tobago, with numerous smaller landforms. The two main islands are divided into nine regions, and one ward. Sangre Grande is the largest of the country's nine regions, comprising about 18% of the total area and 10% of the total population of the country. Trinidad and Tobago lies outside of the hurricane belt.

Around midnight on May 3, Dana Seetahal, a prominent attorney and former senator in Trinidad and Tobago, had just left a casino in the capital of Port of Spain when her vehicle was stopped by another car blocking the road. A van pulled up alongside and let loose a burst of gunfire, killing her in a well orchestrated hit.
Her murder was one of approximately 170 that have occurred in the Caribbean nation so far this year, putting it on course for one of the highest murder rates in the world. The country saw only 93 murders in 1999. Last year, there were 407.
VICE News visited the slums of Port of Spain and spoke with police, activists, community leaders, and gangsters to understand the country's decade-plus spike in killings. Many of the murders are attributed to ruthless and politically connected street gangs who control territories that are sometimes no larger than a city block. The gangs fight over lucrative government contracts meant to provide social services and combat unemployment.
But gang violence is merely a symptom of a bigger problem. Trinidad has become an important stop for drugs headed to West Africa and the United States. Many observers point to "the big fish" — the nameless political and business elites who are behind drug trafficking and the culture of endemic corruption and murder that come with it. They are accused of turning a country rich in oil and gas deposits into their own personal narco-state, fostering impunity through a web of bribes and murders. Unlike the profits from the energy industry, however, this phenomenon trickles all the way down to the street level.

Sweet sweet T&T; - such a hidden gem! If you're looking for a true authentic Caribbean island experience, add this country to your travel bucket list! The fact that it's untouched by tourism made it even better. Every beach we were on felt like our own private beach. Also, the difference between Tobago and Trinidad is really neat because you can have two different types of vacations in one. Tobago is more laid back and slow paced while Trinidad is a bigger city with lots of parties and people - however, don't get it twisted...Tobago knows how to party too! The way we were treated by everyone we met, the food, the constant sound of soca music, the energy and the positivity was unexplainable. The Palacio Padron is located on the Plaza Mayor, the centre of the city. A few years ago the palace was lovingly restored in painstaking detail and transformed into an archaeological museum. Around the main square the most beautiful palaces stand in rows and are an impressive indicator of the colonial lifestyle enjoyed by the former sugar aristocracy.The slave trade and the cultivation of sugar cane made the island’s inhabitants incredibly wealthy and Trinidad became the most important cultural and trade centre in the whole of Cuba. The former palace of the Cantero sugar barons now houses the Museo De Historia, an impressive building in the Calle Bolivar in which visitors can marvel at old timepieces, porcelain, furniture and valuable crystal chandeliers. The seven storey Torre De Iznaga rises menacingly into the sky, the bells of which once summoned the plantation slaves to work while watchmen surveyed the valley from above because of the fears of the plantation owners who believed that one day the slaves would rebel against them. Splendid exotic beauty in a land situated between sun and socialism, sugar and cigars, rumba and revolution. In Trinidad it is as though everything is in a state of suspended animation waiting to be kissed awake.

Every year, travellers flock to Trinidad and Tobago to experience the famous Carnival. Myself and 7 other bloggers/vloggers headed to Trinidad and Tobago to experience what the twin island countries had to offer pre-carnival. In this video, we experience one of the happiest places I've ever travelled throughout...Trinidad. From great food to soca dance parties, Trinidad is a places of celebration and smiling people!

Sweet sweet T&T; - such a hidden gem! If you're looking for a true authentic Caribbean island experience, add this country to your travel bucket list! The fact that it's untouched by tourism made it even better. Every beach we were on felt like our own private beach. Also, the difference between Tobago and Trinidad is really neat because you can have two different types of vacations in one. Tobago is more laid back and slow paced while Trinidad is a bigger city with lots of parties and people - however, don't get it twisted...Tobago knows how to party too!
The way we were treated by everyone we met, the food, the constant sound of soca music, the energy and the positivity was unexplainable.

It’s only 93 miles from Florida, and just 13 from the Bahamas, but like the smoke that coils from its legendary cigars, The Republic of Cuba exists in a time and space all its own.
Few cities can stir the imagination like Cuba’s capital, Havana, a city preserved by forts, a five-mile seawall, and an imposed embargo, which held back the excesses of the 20th century for over 50 years.
Havana’s lure can be hard to resist, but Cuba offers so much more beyond the seductive lights of its capital. In Cuba, a long sandy beach is never far away.
Just 12 miles from Havana’s downtown, the Eastern Beaches unroll toward the town of Matanzas, the birthplace of the rumba, and Cárdenas, where the Cuban Flag flew for the very first time. From here, follow the scent of fresh lime, rum and suntan lotion north to Varadero.
After exploring the northern coastline, turn south towards Cuba’s most revolutionary city, Santa Clara, and Trinidad, once the sugar capital of the world. Don’t miss elegant Cienfuegos, the only Cuban city founded by the French.
Sometimes it’s hard to know whether Cuba is awakening to the world, or if the world is awakening to Cuba. Whatever your politics, it's easy to admire this island nation that has proudly gone its own way.
Cuba may still have one foot firmly in the past, but as the world tumbles towards tomorrow, we can be thankful for the many things it has not let go.

Pathé archive voice over: To few people in a lifetime comes the chance of seeing such a gigantic blaze as the funeral pyre of the Crystal Palace, one of the few remaining links with Queen Victoria and Prince Albert.
Narrator: In 1936 a fire destroyed the spectacular building known as the Crystal Palace - the same building that 85 years earlier had housed the famous ' Great Exhibition' , one of the most important events of the Victorian era.
On 1 May 1851 the Great Exhibition was opened by Queen Victoria. Her husband - Prince Albert - led the development of the Exhibition, which was the first of its kind. It was a bit like a giant museum, full of interesting objects from around the world.
The Great Exhibition was held in London' s Hyde Park in a building that soon became known as the Crystal Palace because of the amount of glass used to build it - and it attracted people from all over the country.
Historical sources like diaries, letters, newspaper articles and pictures tell us about the Great Exhibition. They give us a good idea of what a 'day out' at the Exhibition was like.
Mary Smith, a school-teacher from Oxfordshire, wrote about her visit to the Great Exhibition.
Mary Smith: The time came that we started off on a week' s excursion to London, to see this latest wonder of the world. We travelled, as everyone did, by an 'excursion train' , the first I had experience of, and all our party were very weary of it.
Narrator: Visitors even came from overseas, from as far away as America, China, Trinidad, Australia, India and Ceylon. Less well-off people like Mary Smith went on cheap ticket days, which were very popular.
Mary Smith: Country folks as we were, we naturally made the Exhibition our first object, setting off for Hyde Park directly after breakfast to be there when the doors opened. We went with the common people on the shilling day.
Narrator: It seemed as though everyone was there. If you were really lucky, you might even bump into the Queen herself on one of her many visits.
Queen Victoria: After breakfast we left for the Exhibition. It looked so beautiful this wonderful creation of my beloved Albert's.
Narrator: Lewis Carroll, the author of Alice In Wonderland, found the Great Exhibition very exciting. He wrote that:
Lewis Carroll: The impression when you get inside is of bewilderment. It looks like a sort of fairyland. Far as you can look in any direction, you see nothing but pillars hung about with shawls, carpets, canopies …
Walter Bagehot (coughing and interrupting): The only accurate idea I can give you of the Exhibition is that it is a great fair under a cucumber frame.
Narrator: Walter Bagehot, a journalist and banker, recorded his experience of the Great Exhibition in a letter that he wrote to his mother.
Walter Bagehot: The form of the building is that of a cross, the long stroke being called the nave, and the short stroke the transept. In the exact centre is a stunning fountain made of glass.
Narrator: The Crystal Palace covered an area equivalent to 15 football pitches. It was over 30 metres high and several trees that stood on the site were not sawn down, but were covered by the huge building rather like pot plants in a giant conservatory.
An average of 42,000 visitors from all classes of society came to the Exhibition each day.
Reporter: There were honest fellows in corduroys, agricultural labourers in smock frocks, and rural folk in their full dress of velveteen, with their sweethearts in bright-coloured shawls of scarlet and green.
It was amusing to observe the amazement of these good folks as they entered, and the bewildered look of their upturned wondering eyes gazing up at the roof of the building in stunned and staggered astonishment.
Narrator: There were over 100,000 objects on display.
Exhibits from Britain and its colonies filled one half of the building, and the rest of the world, the other half.
The famous author, Charlotte Brontë, could not believe her eyes.
Charlotte Brontë: Whatever human industry has created, you find there! Railway engines and boilers, mill machinery, splendid carriages of all kinds, glass-covered stands loaded with the most gorgeous work of gold and silver smiths, carefully guarded caskets full of real diamonds and pearls worth thousands of pounds.
Narrator: In the British section, there were manufactured goods such as silk and cotton, cutlery, hand tools and surgical instruments and much more.
Official Guides were employed to show the more well-off visitors around.
Guide: Among the more unusual items to be found at the Exhibition are the following: a piano that four people can play at once, furniture made from papier mâché, a bed that turns into a life-raft, a penknife with eighty blades, a dressing table that doubles up as a fire escape…
Narrator: In the British Machinery Section, there were cranes, lighthouse lamps and huge presses. Mary Smith was intrigued.

Mapping New York City’s Diversity
Acceptance begins with knowledge. To drive home the message, we decided to talk to hundreds of New Yorkers across NYC’s 5 boroughs and map our findings. Here’s an infographic that acts as a ready guide to experience the world in NYC via the city’s ‘littles’.

Of the city’s 8.5 million residents, 38% are foreign born. This eclectic mix of people are what make NYC a thriving epicenter of art, culture, fashion, technology, education, and business.

It’s meant to remind us that NYC is full of diverse people who love living together. Acceptance begins with knowledge. To drive home the message, we decided to talk to hundreds of New Yorkers across NYC’s 5 boroughs and map our findings. Here’s an infographic that acts as a ready guide to experience the world in NYC via the city’s ‘littles’.

Leonid is a Harley Davidson aficionado, an avid talker and a passionate diver. In this video he shows the renowned Cuban photographer, Juan Carlos Alom the tunnels he discovered near to Playa Giron.
One warm winter morning on the southern coast of Cuba in the Ancón Peninsula, over 10 years ago, an ordinary man discovered a unique spot of marine nature: underwater tunnels that penetrate the ocean depths and come out beyond the island shelf. One of the entrances to Leonid Tunnels is found along the coast in a place called La Batea close to Playa de La Boca in Trinidad.
Leonid, who lives in Casilda, a fishing community just 5km away from the city of Trinidad, is a diver by profession and a motorist at heart. He usually rides his Harley Davidson bike for hours enjoying the freedom he has always been accustomed to as a man who has been in communion with nature all of his life. He has three loves in his life: his family, diving and motorbikes.
From 1995 to 2000, indiscriminate fishing led to the partial damage of some areas of Cuba’s marine environment with the subsequent negative consequences for professional divers. One January morning, Leonid parked his bike on one side of the road and entered into the ocean after months of complete inactivity. In his dive, he found a group of connecting labyrinths, perfectly formed caves with spacious chambers and narrow tunnels that rise like chimneys.
The entrance to the first tunnel that Leonid found is 12-15 meters deep and goes down to the wall at 31 meters. From this first tunnel, you find another entrance that starts to go up at 25 meters, and it goes out again to the wall. Somewhat further, divers find what is known as the chimney due to its verticality and narrowness. Here, you dive out at 12 meters, which is the minimum depth of the shelf on the southern coast of Cuba.
The area where the diving centers are located take up much of the Ancón Peninsula, which extends several kilometers into the sea. The peninsula is a natural reserve with a great diversity of fauna, in which birds are predominant. This narrow strip of land is bordered by a sandy seabed with patches of coral, ridges, tunnels, channels and other features, with concentrations of black coral, a wide range of sponges, gorgonians, common sea fans and tropical fish.
Leonid’s discovery of the marine tunnels that were named after him has remained as one of the most important events in his life. Leonid works as a professional guide for individual or group diving expeditions. Being an ordinary man, when people recognize him as the discoverer of the tunnels, he always replies: “The tunnels were always there, I only woke them up.”

VICE News visited the slums of Port of Spain and spoke with police, activists, community leaders, and gangsters to understand the country's decade-plus spike in killings. Many of the murders are attributed to ruthless and politically connected street gangs who control territories that are sometimes no larger than a city block. The gangs fight over lucrative government contracts meant to provide social services and combat unemployment.
But gang violence is merely a symptom of a bigger problem. Trinidad has become an important stop for drugs headed to West Africa and the United States. Many observers point to "the big fish" — the nameless political and business elites who are behind drug trafficking and the culture of endemic corruption and murder that come with it. They are accused of turning a country rich in oil and gas deposits into their own personal narco-state, fostering impunity through a web of bribes and murders. Unlike the profits from the energy industry, however, this phenomenon trickles all the way down to the street level.

Around midnight on May 3, Dana Seetahal, a prominent attorney and former senator in Trinidad and Tobago, had just left a casino in the capital of Port of Spain when her vehicle was stopped by another car blocking the road. A van pulled up alongside and let loose a burst of gunfire, killing her in a well orchestrated hit.
Her murder was one of approximately 170 that have occurred in the Caribbean nation so far this year, putting it on course for one of the highest murder rates in the world. The country saw only 93 murders in 1999. Last year, there were 407.
VICE News visited the slums of Port of Spain and spoke with police, activists, community leaders, and gangsters to understand the country's decade-plus spike in killings. Many of the murders are attributed to ruthless and politically connected street gangs who control territories that are sometimes no larger than a city block. The gangs fight over lucrative government contracts meant to provide social services and combat unemployment.
But gang violence is merely a symptom of a bigger problem. Trinidad has become an important stop for drugs headed to West Africa and the United States. Many observers point to "the big fish" — the nameless political and business elites who are behind drug trafficking and the culture of endemic corruption and murder that come with it. They are accused of turning a country rich in oil and gas deposits into their own personal narco-state, fostering impunity through a web of bribes and murders. Unlike the profits from the energy industry, however, this phenomenon trickles all the way down to the street level.
