Garry Monk

Garry Alan Monk (born 6 March 1979) is an English football manager and former professional footballer who played as a central defender.

He played for Swansea City in all four divisions of professional football from 2004 to 2014, for the majority of that time as captain. He played 260 games for Swansea in all competitions over ten seasons, and was part of their team which won the 2013 Football League Cup Final.

From February 2014 to December 2015, Monk was Swansea's manager.

Playing career

Early career

Born in Bedford, Bedfordshire, Monk began his career as a trainee with Torquay United, making five appearances during the 1995–96 season, whilst still a trainee after growing up in Torquay for the majority of his youth. At the end of that season he moved to Southampton to complete his apprenticeship and turned professional with The Saints in May 1997.

Monk returned to Torquay on loan in September 1998 and on returning to the Dell, immediately broke into the first team squad, making his first team début against Derby County on 28 November 1998 in place of the injured Ken Monkou. In September 1999, he had a loan spell at Stockport County, before being recalled to the first team for two matches in January 2000.

Leeds United F.C.

Leeds United Football Club is an English football club in Leeds, West Yorkshire. The club was formed in 1919 following the disbanding of Leeds City F.C. by the Football League and took over their Elland Road stadium. They currently play in the Football League Championship, the second tier of the English football league system.

Leeds United have won three First Division league titles, one FA Cup and one League Cup. The club also won two Inter-Cities Fairs Cups. The majority of the honours were won under the management of Don Revie in the 1960s and 1970s. Leeds lost the 1975 European Cup Final against Bayern Munich and reached the semi finals of the tournament's successor Champions League in 2001.

Leeds United play in white. The club badge features the White Rose of York and "LUFC".

History Summary

Pre-Leeds United

Leeds United's predecessor team, Leeds City, was formed in 1904, and were elected League members in 1905. At first they found it hard to draw big crowds to Elland Road but their fortunes improved following Herbert Chapman's arrival. In 1914 Chapman declared; "This city is built to support top-flight football", but Leeds City were forcibly disbanded and forced to sell off all their players by The Football League in 1919 in response to allegations of illegal payments to players during the First World War. In 1919, Leeds United was formed and they received an invitation to enter the Midland League. Leeds United were voted into the Midland League on 31 October 1919, taking the place vacated by Leeds City Reserves. Following Leeds City's disbanding, Yorkshire Amateurs bought their stadium Elland Road. Yorkshire Amateurs offered to make way for the new team under the management of former player Dick Ray.

Monk

A monk (from Greek: μοναχός, monachos, "single, solitary" and Latin monachus) is a person who practices religious asceticism, living either alone or with any number of other monks. A monk may be a person who decided to dedicate his life to serving all other living beings, or to be an ascetic who voluntarily chooses to leave mainstream society and live his life in prayer and contemplation. The concept is ancient and can be seen in many religions and in philosophy.

In the Greek language the term can apply to women, but in modern English it is mainly in use for men. The word nun is typically used for female monastics.

Although the term monachos is of Christian origin, in the English language "monk" tends to be used loosely also for both male and female ascetics from other religious or philosophical backgrounds. However, being generic, it is not interchangeable with terms that denote particular kinds of monk, such as friar, cenobite, hermit, anchorite, hesychast, or solitary.

Radio Yorkshire

Radio Yorkshire is a radio station for Yorkshire. Radio Yorkshire is based above Subway across the road from Leeds United's Elland Road football stadium.

The station began broadcasting in March 2014. The station was set up by former Leeds chairman Ken Bates. The station plays music from the 1960s to the present day.

In October 2014, it was revealed by Ken Bates that after an agreement with Leeds United owner Massimo Cellino that Radio Yorkshire would broadcast Leeds United games, thus sharing broadcasting rights with BBC Radio Leeds and LUTV for live matchday commentary of all Leeds United first team games.

The station also broadcasts live commentaries from Super League, usually two a weekend with coverage now extended to the Kingstone Press Championship. Rugby League Review is broadcast on Monday evenings between 7pm and 9pm during the season, with various studio guests including Rugby League journalists and former international Garry Schofield.
