The 24th Gemini Awards were held on 14 November 2009 to honour achievements in Canadian television. The ceremony was broadcast on Showcase and Global. The host was Ron James. Special awards were handed out to Corner Gas, Trailer Park Boys and Royal Canadian Air Farce for their contributions to Canadian television.
The Gemini Awards were awards given by the Academy of Canadian Cinema & Television to recognize the achievements of Canada's television industry. The Gemini Awards are analogous to the Emmy Awards given in the American television industry. First held in 1986 to replace the ACTRA Award, the ceremony celebrated Canadian television productions with awards in 87 categories, along with other special awards such as lifetime achievement awards.
In April 2012, the Academy of Canadian Cinema & Television announced that the Gemini Awards and the Genie Awards would be discontinued and replaced by a new award ceremony dedicated to all forms of Canadian media, including television, film, and digital media. The first Canadian Screen Awards were held on 4 March 2013.
The Geminis covered only English-language productions. The Academy also organizes a separate awards show for French productions known as the Prix Gémeaux.
Gemini (Latin for twins) may refer to:
An award is something given to a person, a group of people, or an organization to recognize their excellence in a certain field; a certificate of excellence. Awards are often signified by trophies, titles, certificates, commemorative plaques, medals, badges, pins, or ribbons. An award may carry a monetary prize given to the recipient; for example, the Nobel Prize for contributions to society or the Pulitzer Prize for literary achievements. An award may also simply be a public acknowledgment of excellence, without any tangible token or prize.
Awards can be given by any person or institution, although the prestige of an award usually depends on the status of the awarder. Usually, awards are given by an organization of some sort, or by the office of an official within an organization or government. For instance, a special presidential citation (as given by the President of the United States) is a public announcement giving an official place of honor (e.g., President Ronald Reagan gave a special presidential citation in 1984 to the Disney Channel for its excellent children's television programming.)
Megan Elizabeth Laura Diana Follows (born March 14, 1968) is a Canadian actress, best known to international audiences for her roles as Anne Shirley in the 1985 Canadian television miniseries Anne of Green Gables and two of its sequels, and as Catherine de' Medici in the television series Reign.
Follows was born in Toronto, Ontario, the youngest of four children, in an acting family. Her father is Canadian theater actor and director Ted Follows, and her mother is Canadian actress Dawn Greenhalgh; her parents later divorced. Her three siblings are all in the entertainment industry. Her elder sister Edwina is a writer, while her brother Laurence and sister Samantha Follows (who is married to American actor Sean O'Bryan) are also actors.
Her first acting job came at the age of nine, when she landed a spot in a commercial for Bell Canada. She was directed to make an impudent gesture out of a school bus window – like sticking out her tongue - but ended up making a rather obscene adult gesture instead. She found steady work in Canada, appearing in a few TV series such as Matt and Jenny, The Baxters, and The Littlest Hobo, in which she guest-starred with her entire family in a three-part episode. She also starred in the short film "Boys and Girls" (1983), which won an Academy Award for Best Short Subject.
