Fishermen watch mate disappear into the ocean off High Rocks, near Carnarvon

The search for a man who was washed off rocks while fishing north of Carnarvon on Sunday has resumed on Monday morning.

Police Inspector Mal Anderson said the 28-year-old man was fishing at High Rocks, near Quobba Station, with two other fishermen on Sunday about 12:30pm when a large wave came over the top of the cliff and washed the man into the ocean.

The cliffs in the area are about 10 metres high and witnesses watched the man for as short time while making efforts to rescue him.

A rescue boat was dispatched at the time but failed to find the man. Two vessels are currently searching the water, and a plane from Geraldton will begin searching at 9am.

WA Police officers and SES volunteers are searching the coastline.
