Several of these were set to music by the American folk composer, John Jacob Niles. In this lecture-recital, a brief presentation on Merton's life and thought will be given, followed by a performance of eight of their songs.

Thomas Merton
Thomas Merton, O.C.S.O. (January 31, 1915 – December 10, 1968) was an American Catholic writer and mystic. A Trappist monk of the Abbey of Gethsemani, Kentucky, he was a poet, social activist, and student of comparative religion. In 1949, he was ordained to the priesthood and given the name Father Louis.
Merton wrote more than 70 books, mostly on spirituality, social justice and a quiet pacifism, as well as scores of essays and reviews. Among Merton's most enduring works is his bestselling autobiography The Seven Storey Mountain (1948), which sent scores of World War II veterans, students, and even teenagers flocking to monasteries across the US, and was also featured in National Review's list of the 100 best non-fiction books of the century. Merton was a keen proponent of interfaith understanding. He pioneered dialogue with prominent Asian spiritual figures, including the Dalai Lama, the Japanese writer D.T. Suzuki, the Thai Buddhist monk Buddhadasa, and the Vietnamese monk Thich Nhat Hanh, and authored books on Zen Buddhism and Taoism. In the years since his death, Merton has been the subject of several biographies.

Marymount Academy
Marymount Academy (commonly referred to as Marymount) is a public secondary school in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. Directed by the English Montreal School Board (EMSB), Marymount offers an International Program of Studies based on the philosophy of the International Baccalaureate Organization (IBO) but still following Quebec Ministerial objectives as well the Regular program of studies (MEQ). The school serves around 400 to 500 students of very diverse cultural backgrounds mostly from the borough of Côte-des-Neiges–Notre-Dame-de-Grâce.
History
Marymount High School was founded in 1961 and offered programs separately for boys and girls. In 1970 these separate programs were merged under the Marymount Comprehensive High School. In 1984, Marymount Academy adopted its present name and was relocated to 5100 Cote St. Luc Road, where it currently resides. By 1990, school uniforms were instituted as compulsory, and in 1996 the International Baccalaureate Program was established.

Spirit of Giving 2014 Recap
Anchored by the throngs of student volunteers from Marymount Academy International, the English Montreal School Board, along with CTV Montreal, once again completed a successful Spirit of Giving Campaign. A total of 44 schools and centres participated in this year’s campaign, collecting non-perishable goods, toiletries and toys for nine different charities: Share The Warmth, West Island Assistance Fund, Renaissance Montreal, Multicaf, Parc Extension Share Store, Le Bon Dieu Dans La Rue, Batshaw Youth and Family Services, La Mosaique and the N.D.G. Food Depot. In all, the combined efforts of the EMSB, its schools and facilities generated a record 1,100 boxes of non-perishable food, and over 40,000 toys and miscellaneous items. Anchored by the throngs of student volunteers from Marymount Academy International, the English Montreal School Board, along with CTV Montreal, once again completed a successful Spirit of Giving Campaign.
A total of 44 schools and centres participated in this year’s campaign, collecting non-perishable goods, toiletries and toys for nine different charities: Share The Warmth, West Island Assistance Fund, Renaissance Montreal, Multicaf, Parc Extension Share Store, Le Bon Dieu Dans La Rue, Batshaw Youth and Family Services, La Mosaique and the N.D.G. Food Depot.
In all, the combined efforts of the EMSB, its schools and facilities generated a record 1,100 boxes of non-perishable food, and over 40,000 toys and miscellaneous items. These boxes were then transported by the Canadian Grenadier Guards to Marymount Academy International where their students volunteered to sort and categorize the donations.
The following schools and centres participated in the 2014 Spirit of Giving campaign: James Lyng High School in St. Henri; Rosemount High School, Rosemount Tech Centre and Vincent Massey Collegiate in Rosemount; St. Dorothy in St. Michel; Dalkeith Elementary in Anjou; Edward Murphy School in Hochelaga-Maisonneuve; Cedarcrest, Gardenview and Parkdale Elementary Schools, LaurenHill Academy and St. Laurent Adult Centre in St. Laurent; St. Monica and Willingdon Elementary Schools, Royal Vale School and Marymount Academy and Shadd Business Centre in N.D.G.; Coronation Elementary School in Cote-des-Neiges; Dunrae Gardens and Carlyle Elementary School in the Town of Mont-Royal; Roslyn Elementary in Westmount; Edinburgh and Elizabeth Ballantyne in Montreal West; Hampstead Elementary; Sinclair Laird in Park Extension; East Hill and Michelangelo Elementary Schools in Riviere-des-Prairies; Merton Elementary School in Côte St. Luc; St. Pius Adult Centre, John Caboto Academy and Our Lady of Pompei in Ahuntsic; Galileo Adult Centre, Gerald McShane Elementary School and Lester B. They hammered on two nose cones, poured blood on documents and offered prayers for peace. They were arrested and initially charged with over ten different felony and misdemeanor counts. In February 1981, they underwent a jury trial in Norristown, Pennsylvania. During their trial they were denied a "justification defense" and could not present expert testimony. Due to the Court's suppression of individual testimony about the Mark 12A and U.S. nuclear war-fighting policies, four left the trial and returned to witness at G.E. They were re-arrested and returned to court. They were convicted by a jury of burglary, conspiracy and criminal mischief and sentenced to prison terms of five to ten years. They appealed and the Pennsylvania Superior Court reversed their conviction in February 1984. The State of Pennsylvania then appealed that decision.
Following a ruling in the fall of 1985 by the Pennsylvania Supreme Court in favor of the State on certain issues (including the exclusion of the justification defense), the case was returned to the Superior Court Appeals Panel. In December of 1987, the Superior Court of Pennsylvania refused their appeal, but ordered a re-sentencing. This ruling, however, was appealed to the Pennsylvania Supreme Court. In February 1989 the Pennsylvania Supreme Court denied a hearing of any further issues in the case, and on October 2, 1989 the U.S. Supreme Court announced it would not hear the Plowshares Eight Appeal.

Anchored by the throngs of student volunteers from Marymount Academy International, the English Montreal School Board, along with CTV Montreal, once again completed a successful Spirit of Giving Campaign. A total of 44 schools and centres participated in this year’s campaign, collecting non-perishable goods, toiletries and toys for nine different charities: Share The Warmth, West Island Assistance Fund, Renaissance Montreal, Multicaf, Parc Extension Share Store, Le Bon Dieu Dans La Rue, Batshaw Youth and Family Services, La Mosaique and the N.D.G. Food Depot. In all, the combined efforts of the EMSB, its schools and facilities generated a record 1,100 boxes of non-perishable food, and over 40,000 toys and miscellaneous items. Anchored by the throngs of student volunteers from Marymount Academy International, the English Montreal School Board, along with CTV Montreal, once again completed a successful Spirit of Giving Campaign.
A total of 44 schools and centres participated in this year’s campaign, collecting non-perishable goods, toiletries and toys for nine different charities: Share The Warmth, West Island Assistance Fund, Renaissance Montreal, Multicaf, Parc Extension Share Store, Le Bon Dieu Dans La Rue, Batshaw Youth and Family Services, La Mosaique and the N.D.G. Food Depot.
In all, the combined efforts of the EMSB, its schools and facilities generated a record 1,100 boxes of non-perishable food, and over 40,000 toys and miscellaneous items. These boxes were then transported by the Canadian Grenadier Guards to Marymount Academy International where their students volunteered to sort and categorize the donations.
The following schools and centres participated in the 2014 Spirit of Giving campaign: James Lyng High School in St. Henri; Rosemount High School, Rosemount Tech Centre and Vincent Massey Collegiate in Rosemount; St. Dorothy in St. Michel; Dalkeith Elementary in Anjou; Edward Murphy School in Hochelaga-Maisonneuve; Cedarcrest, Gardenview and Parkdale Elementary Schools, LaurenHill Academy and St. Laurent Adult Centre in St. Laurent; St. Monica and Willingdon Elementary Schools, Royal Vale School and Marymount Academy and Shadd Business Centre in N.D.G.; Coronation Elementary School in Cote-des-Neiges; Dunrae Gardens and Carlyle Elementary School in the Town of Mont-Royal; Roslyn Elementary in Westmount; Edinburgh and Elizabeth Ballantyne in Montreal West; Hampstead Elementary; Sinclair Laird in Park Extension; East Hill and Michelangelo Elementary Schools in Riviere-des-Prairies; Merton Elementary School in Côte St. Luc; St. Pius Adult Centre, John Caboto Academy and Our Lady of Pompei in Ahuntsic; Galileo Adult Centre, Gerald McShane Elementary School and Lester B. Despite the challenge of sorting through and re-packing 1,100 boxes, everyone at Marymount Academy International was thrilled to participate and be involved. We look forward to next year!”

They hammered on two nose cones, poured blood on documents and offered prayers for peace. They were arrested and initially charged with over ten different felony and misdemeanor counts. In February 1981, they underwent a jury trial in Norristown, Pennsylvania. During their trial they were denied a "justification defense" and could not present expert testimony. Due to the Court's suppression of individual testimony about the Mark 12A and U.S. nuclear war-fighting policies, four left the trial and returned to witness at G.E. They were re-arrested and returned to court. They were convicted by a jury of burglary, conspiracy and criminal mischief and sentenced to prison terms of five to ten years. They appealed and the Pennsylvania Superior Court reversed their conviction in February 1984. The State of Pennsylvania then appealed that decision.
Following a ruling in the fall of 1985 by the Pennsylvania Supreme Court in favor of the State on certain issues (including the exclusion of the justification defense), the case was returned to the Superior Court Appeals Panel. In December of 1987, the Superior Court of Pennsylvania refused their appeal, but ordered a re-sentencing. This ruling, however, was appealed to the Pennsylvania Supreme Court. In February 1989 the Pennsylvania Supreme Court denied a hearing of any further issues in the case, and on October 2, 1989 the U.S. Supreme Court announced it would not hear the Plowshares Eight Appeal.

To celebrate the centenary of the birth of Old Oakhamian Thomas Merton, the Very Revd John Moses gave a lecture in the Wilson Auditorium at Oakham School. The Dean spoke most warmly of Thomas Merton as a schoolboy whose education and attitude towards life was in many ways formed whilst still at Oakham. His ability to debate, his love and compassion for people and his appreciation of the value of contemplation could all be recognised as taking root at Oakham, whilst his love for God and desire to enter a monastic order did not come until later into his twenties.

These were our many saints and mystics. This possibility was brought to the fore by Thomas Merton in the middle of the last century, and is now flowing in many positive directions. It is now our task to rediscover the pre-Enlightenment Christianity that reveled in "the cloud of unknowing", what some called "learned ignorance", and the very notion of Mystery itself. Only when we got into competition with rationalism and secularism, did we adopt this rather recent mania for certitude and a very limited kind of scientific knowing. Almost the entire history of Protestantism emerged in this period, and thus the contemplative mind is an utterly new revelation for them, and frankly for all of us, as we again learn to be comfortable living on the edge of both the knowable and the unknown.
Fr. Richard Rohr is a globally recognized ecumenical teacher bearing witness to the universal awakening within Christian mysticism and the Perennial Tradition. He is a Franciscan priest of the New Mexico Province and founder of the Center for Action and Contemplation (CAC) in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Fr. Richard’s teaching is grounded in the Franciscan alternative orthodoxy—practices of contemplation and self-emptying, expressing itself in radical compassion, particularly for the socially marginalized. Fr. Richard is the author of numerous books, including Everything Belongs, Adam’s Return, The Naked Now, Breathing Under Water, Falling Upward, Immortal Diamond, and Eager to Love: The Alternative Way of Francis of Assisi.
