In this year alone, we’ve made significant progress in many discoveries. It all started in January 2016 - precisely on January 1st in Malibu, California. Researchers from HRL Laboratories achieved a breakthrough in ceramic 3D printing tecnology and took 3D printing to a whole another level. Alright, what’s next on the list? January was also the month where scientists made people question their New Year resolution dietary choices by discovering a new enzyme called G3PP which prevents sugar being stored as fat. Also known as the ‘detox enzyme,’, G3PP can be found in all types of body tissue and it seems to be able to regulate the conversion of glucoes and fats and the production of energy. January 2016 was also the month of first head transplants being successfully carried out on a monkey by Chinese scientists. Sure, it might seem bizarre, but this is really a significant progress for neuro science. We’ve also discovered a ninth planet! And no, Pluto’s still not back in the game. While the space enthusiasts still mourn the loss of Pluto, California Institute of Technology kept busy and discovered evidence of a ninth planet which is orbiting the sun every 15,000 years. February’s discovery was slightly different - the University of Southampton announced a revolutionary step toward creating 5D data storage which can survive for billions of years. So what does this mean exactly? March marked the discovery of the most remote galaxy ever detected, called GN-z11. This fascinating galaxy is 13.4 billion light years away and "very close to the end of the so-called Dark Ages of the universe" - no, this is not sarcasm, this is the actual report. Heading into April, NASA astronomers discovered an asteroid called HO3 2016, orbiting around the sun and the Earth. Scientists refer to it as the “quasi-satellite of Earth” as it appears to be quite locked into its pathway around the Eart and is 9 million miles away. If you’re ever complaining about your slow computer, this one’s for you - June marked the discovery of the world’s fastest supercomputer. Called Sunway TaihuLight, this absolutely massive system claims to be the world’s fastest computer. Depression is still a big mystery in the medical world but in August 2016, researchers made significant progress when it comes to defining genes associated with depression. Ever wondered what is the longest living vertebrate animal on Earth? August 2016, researchers revealed it is the Greenland shark, found to be capable of living nearly 400 years. Fascinated about meteorites? The next discovery will blow you away - in September, we have discovered the second largest meteorite ever found, located in Argentina. In an extremely interesting September discovery, all non-african humans currently alive on Earth can be easily traced into a single group that exited Africa about 50,000 years ago September seemed to be quite an eventful month for science, huh? In baby news, a first mitochondrial donation baby was born in the UK. Ever heard of the three-parent technique? Here’s one for caffeine addicts - next time someone gives you crap about your caffeine consumption, tell them this: on October 3rd 2016, University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee found that caffeine consumption might reduce the risk of dementia in women by whooping 36 percent. Ever wanted to see what a functioning brain looks like in real life? Done for the first time ever by the scientists at the Rockefeller University who used a technique called light sculpting to see real life neurons of a mouse brain in 3-D. And we’re nearing the end of the year - in December, UC Berkley designed one of the coolest robots we’ve ever seen. Known by the name of Salto, researchers managed to designed a robot that can literally do parkour and impressive acrobatics. Now hold up, we’re not done yet. Possibly the cutest discovery award of 2016 goes to the Googly Eyed Stubbly Squid, found by the Researchers from the Nautilus exploration vessel somewhere off the California coast.
