1-bit architecture

A 1-bit computer architecture is an instruction set architecture for a processor that has datapath widths and data register widths of 1 bit (1/8 octet) wide.

An example of a 1-bit architecture that was actually marketed as a CPU is the Motorola MC14500B Industrial Control Unit. There are also several design studies for 1-bit architectures in academia, and corresponding 1-bit logic can also be found in programming.

Most calculators used a bit serial design before using 4-bit and later up to 32-bit processors.

Other examples of 1-bit architectures are programmable logic controllers.

A typical sequence of instructions from a program for a 1-bit architecture might be:

load digital input 1 into a 1-bit register;

OR the value in the 1-bit register with input 2, leaving the result in the register;

write the value in the 1-bit register to output 1.

1-bit CPUs can be considered obsolete now, not many kinds have been produced (MC14500B and WDR-1 known) and none known to be available in any computer component store (except, as of 2014, a few on eBay).

Bit

A bit, also known as a Shannon, is the basic unit of information in computing and digital communications. A bit can have only one of two values, and may therefore be physically implemented with a two-state device. These values are most commonly represented as either a 0or1. The term bit is a portmanteau of binary digit.

The two values can also be interpreted as logical values (true/false, yes/no), algebraic signs (+/−), activation states (on/off), or any other two-valued attribute. The correspondence between these values and the physical states of the underlying storage or device is a matter of convention, and different assignments may be used even within the same device or program. The length of a binary number may be referred to as its bit-length.

In information theory, one bit is typically defined as the uncertainty of a binary random variable that is 0 or 1 with equal probability, or the information that is gained when the value of such a variable becomes known.

In quantum computing, a quantum bit or qubit is a quantum system that can exist in superposition of two classical (i.e., non-quantum) bit values.

Bits and Bytes

Bits and Bytes was the name of two Canadian educational television series that taught the basics of how to use a personal computer. The first series, made in 1983, starred Luba Goy as the Instructor and Billy Van as the Student.Bits and Bytes 2 was produced in 1991 and starred Billy Van on his own.

The intro sequence featured a montage of common computer terms such as "ERROR", "LOGO" and "ROM", as well as various snippets of simple computer graphics and video effects, accompanied by a theme song that very heavily borrows from the 1978 song Neon Lights by Kraftwerk. The series were produced by TVOntario. The Writer-Producers of both Bits and Bytes and Bits and Bytes 2 were Denise Boiteau & David Stansfield.

The first series featured an unusual presentation format whereby Luba Goy as the instructor would address Billy Van through a remote video link. The video link would appear to Luba who was seated in an office on a projection screen in front of her. She was then able to direct Billy, who appeared on a soundstage with various desktop computer setups of the era. Popular systems emphasized included the Atari 800, Commodore PET, Tandy TRS-80, and Apple II. Each episode also included short animated vignettes to explain key concepts, as well as videotaped segments on various developments in computing.

In the example given in the video, the state of a bit is compared with a flashlight, were the light being on is a 1 and off as a 0, because a bit is one single unit of computer data and because it has a single binary value. A byte is a 8 bits combined, so it has 256 different possibilities as there is 2 different possibilities of a bit, and there is 8 bits in a byte.
