Angry commuters burnt trains, looted shops and smashed windows at Cape Town?s central train station after a signal failure left them stranded for hours without alternative transportation on Monday, June 12. According to local media, operators provided some buses but not nearly enough to transport all the passengers. Footage shared by one eyewitness showed people climbing through bus windows to get onboard. For some commuters the disruptions on Monday were the final straw, with complaints about frequent delays flooding Facebook. Others were outraged by the destruction to the train station and trains. US sharemarkets fell on Monday with technology stocks again leading the declines due to profit-taking. Shares in Apple fell by 2.4%. And shares of General Electric rose by 3.6% after the company said Jeff Immelt would retire as chief executive and would be replaced by John Flannery. The Dow Jones ended lower by almost 36 points or 0.2% after being down 85 points at one stage. The S&P 500 index was down by 0.1% while the Nasdaq lost 32 points or 0.5%.
