There's money to be made on bikes
NO LACK OF PART TIME JOBS FOR BOYS
MEET some of the boys who can tell you that pedalling pays.
Eighteen-year-old Peter White, of Walpole st., Kew, is riding his bike on a paper round to buy petrol for the late model car he has bought with his savings!
PETER started bike messages years ago. He's now one of the top riders in Kew Amateur Cycle Club.
"The round gives me plenty of practice," he says.
He scraped and saved to get a deposit for his car.
Now he's paying it off with money he earns on his bike.
He has four bikes altogether for his racing.
He is still studying to be an engineer.
YOUNG Wally Leckie of Brougham st., Kew, realised the worth of his bike when he was only nine. He's bought clothes, toys, and sports gear.
Now he is saving for a "super" road racing bike. Dad is helping him, and one day he hopes to become a cycling champion.
We put the idea of Pedal Clubs to the boys. They thought it was great.
"That would be beaut," Wally said. "We could go on trips together and have great fun, swap ideas - and even bikes."
Brian Galley, of Peel st., has used his bike to buy a footy jumper, boots, and a football this year.
He barracks for Essendon, and rides to every Melbourne ground to see them play.
Ken White was starting his first night with his own bike last night. "I want to get a better bike like the other blokes," he said.
Leon Wiegard has his own racer. But that's his only ambition so far.
"Now I have the bike I just spend the money as I make it," he said. It is not John D. Rockefeller's motto, but Leon has fun.
Paul Wenn, of Fellow st., Kew, was wearing the new shoes he had bought with money from working on his bike.
Now he is saving for a new suit. "Sure. Pedal Clubs would be great fun." he said.
These are but a few of the hundreds of boys in Melbourne who are getting the bikes, footballs, and gear they love by using their heads, and their bikes.
The jobs are there waiting boys, so go to it!
Build a little trailer, or special box on the handle-bars, and you'll soon find a local chemist or grocer with messages to be done.
"We just HAVE to have boys," chemists said yesterday
In outer suburbs particularly, where delivery is difficult, the chemist has no time to be running from house to house. The boys are invaluable.
"It's a responsible job for a young boy, a Reservoir chemist said yesterday, "and any youngster who is 'on the ball' can earn good pocket money."

WHAT was so good about the good old days? One word comes to mind — freedom. On the weekends and after school we could take off on our bikes and just ride and ride.
