Sevier County is the name of several counties in the United States:
Pigeon Forge is a mountain resort city in Sevier County, Tennessee, located in the southeastern United States. As of the 2010 census, the city had a total population of 5,875.
Situated just five miles (8 km) north of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, Pigeon Forge is a tourist destination that caters primarily to Southern culture and country music fans. The city's attractions include Dollywood, as well as numerous gift shops, outlet malls, amusement rides, and music theaters.
The name "Pigeon Forge" comes from an iron forge built by Isaac Love (1783–1854) sometime around 1820. The name of this forge referred to its location along the Little Pigeon River, in the vicinity of what is now the Old Mill. The name of the river comes from the flocks of passenger pigeons that frequented its banks at the time of the first Euro-American settlers' arrival.
For centuries, the Cherokee used the valley where Pigeon Forge is now located as a hunting ground. A Cherokee footpath known as the "Indian Gap Trail" crossed the Great Smokies from North Carolina, and passed through the Pigeon Forge valley en route to its junction with the Great Indian Warpath in modern Sevierville (US-441 closely parallels this ancient trail, although it crests the mountains at Newfound Gap rather than Indian Gap). From Sevierville, the Warpath headed west toward the Overhill Cherokee towns along the Little Tennessee River.
Sevier /sɛˈvɪər/ is an unincorporated community in southwestern Sevier County, Utah, United States. It lies in the valley of the Sevier River along U.S. Route 89 southwest of the city of Richfield, the county seat of Sevier County. Its elevation is 5,584 feet (1,702 m). Although Sevier is unincorporated, it has a post office, with the ZIP code of 84766. It has a population of about 80 people. Sevier has many farms.
Sevier has experienced rapid population growth in the 1990s and 2000s, and seasonal migrant laborers, mostly of Mexican and other Hispanic nationalities, made the population transfluid over the course of the year.
This climatic region is typified by large seasonal temperature differences, with warm to hot (and often humid) summers and cold (sometimes severely cold) winters. According to the Köppen Climate Classification system, Sevier has a humid continental climate, abbreviated "Dfb" on climate maps.
A county, abbreviated Cnty. (US) or Co. (UK and Ireland), is a geographical region of a country used for administrative or other purposes, in certain modern nations. The term is derived from the Old French conté or cunté denoting a jurisdiction under the sovereignty of a count (earl) or a viscount. The modern French is comté, and its equivalents in other languages are contea, contado, comtat, condado, Grafschaft, graafschap, Gau, etc. (cf. conte, comte, conde, Graf).
When the Normans conquered England, they brought the term with them. The Saxons had already established the districts that became the historic counties of England, calling them shires (many county names derive from the name of the county town with the word "shire" added on: for example, Gloucestershire and Worcestershire). The Vikings introduced the term earl (from Old Norse, jarl) to the British Isles. Thus, "earl" and "earldom" were taken as equivalent to the continental use of "count" and "county". So the later-imported term became a synonym for the native English word scir ([ʃiːr]) or, in Modern English, shire. Since a shire was an administrative division of the kingdom, the term "county" evolved to designate an administrative division of national government in most modern uses.
SEVIER COUNTY, Tenn. (WKRC) - Seven people have now been found dead as a result of the fires in the Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge areas. One victim was found in a motel on SR 321 in Gatlinburg. None of the victims have been identified yet. The area has seen up to an inch of rain. That rain will help to prevent new fires and suppress current flames. However, it really needs to permeate the leaves to really soak the area and keep those fires from burning. Crews will be assessing the area on Wednesday to see if they can reopen any of the roads that remain closed. There should be an update around 4 p.m. Thousands of people who live and were visiting Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge remain under evacuation orders. At least 150 buildings have been destroyed.
