The Terex S-24: an overview by Richard Campbell
Designed as a direct replacement for its existing S-18 single engined motor scraper, the Euclid (later Terex) S-24 had a long career and was the company’s most successful single engined, open bowl scraper.
Responding to industry requests for more horsepower and the fact that General Motors was going to discontinue manufacture of the series 6-110 engine, Euclid set about a redesign of the S-18 to utilise the new GM 12V-71 diesel engine. (The former 325 horsepower GM 6-110 had previously been the principal power unit for the S-18, SS-24 and TS-24 scrapers.)
Several pilot models were trialled until an acceptable layout was reached.
Euclid replaced the 3-speed Allison powershift transmission previously used with a 5-speed model increasing the unit’s top speed and made the 33.5×25 tyre standard (it was previously an option).
The GM 12V-71 engine chosen for the new machine put out 392 flywheel horsepower, a considerable increase over the former 6-110 engine, so Euclid took this opportunity to increase the carrying capacity of the bowl, boosting it from 18 cubic yards struck to 24 cubic yards struck.
However it still retained the S-18’s cable-operated apron.
In this format, the new machine was released to the contracting world in 1961 as the Euclid S-24 or Euclid model 39LOT-46SH.
Immediately successful, Euclid began producing the S-24 in quantity.
As with all good machines, there is always room for a little improvement and it wasn’t long before Euclid began tweaking the new S-24 to further increase its performance and customer acceptability.
The first minor alteration was in 1962 when the 5-speed Allison transmission was replaced by a 6-speed model, further increasing the machine’s top speed.
In 1963 the cable apron was replaced by a dual hydraulically actuated model, very similar to that which had been tried experimentally on the twin-powered TS-24 scraper.
An increase in engine horsepower was also made from 392 up to 423 flywheel horsepower. This was made possible by utilising the new N-series fuel injectors.
Euclid also added an extra air cleaner at this point to cater for the engine’s increased air demands.
The machine’s serial number designator was changed to reflect these modifications and became 39LOT-55SH.
Next major modification came in 1969 when the naturally aspirated 12V-71N engine was replaced by the turbocharged 12V-71T.
Horsepower remained the same but the engine now burned slightly less fuel, “breathed” better and was more efficient at altitude.
The scraper was structurally reinforced in a number of places and several hydraulic revisions were undertaken.
This machine was known as the S-24 model 49LOT-76SH and was the most numerous of all the S-24 models.
In order to remain competitive in the earthmoving marketplace, Terex (the name changed from Euclid to Terex in 1968) completely redesigned the S-24 in the late 1970s to incorporate a power down bowl and axle suspension.
The new machine was known as the Terex S-24B “Loadrunner” and bore very little resemblance to its predecessors other than its bowl capacity, 24 cubic yards.
Power was provided by a turbocharged 475 horsepower GM 12V-71T engine connected to an Allison CLT-5865 6-speed powershift transmission.

Standard tyre size was increased to 37.5×33.
A further revision of this design was introduced in 1986 as the Terex S-24C.
Terex offered an optional Cummins diesel for this model, the 480 horsepower KTA-19C and raised the heaped capacity to 34 cubic yards but it was all sadly to little avail.
Very few of these powerful and imposing looking scrapers were actually manufactured.
The S-24C was the last S-24 to be produced as not long after the company was wracked by bankruptcy, the IBH scandal, several takeovers and a general downturn in the earthmoving industry worldwide.
Production of the TS-24 and TS-14 models was moved to Terex’s still profitable Scottish plant and the S-24 was discontinued.
Unlike the S-24’s predecessor, the S-18 which was also manufactured for a time in the UK, the various models of S-24 were only produced at Terex’s Hudson, Ohio US facility.

So I waited in line for over an hour in San Fran to hop on the legendary Powell/Hyde St. Cable car. So glad I did. I was able to hop on the front and got some cool GoPro of the ride thru San Fran. I left the original audio in so you can hear the gears grinding and the bells chime as we go up and down the hills in the city, it gets pretty narley in places, like a roller coaster sort of... enjoy.

Cable car
A cable car is any of a variety of transportation systems relying on cables to pull vehicles along or lower them at a steady rate. The terminology also refers to the vehicles on these systems. The cable car vehicles are motor-less and engine-less and they are pulled by a cable that is rotated by a motor off-board.
Background
Cable car transport systems are a viable transportation system for various situations. Cable-Propelled Transit (CPT or cable for short) can be effective as a mass transit system at a reasonable cost.
They are advantageous for transit of mountains, valleys, steep slopes and bodies of water. Constructing roads in mountainous terrain requires substantial funding and can significantly affect the environment."The minimally invasive design enables ropeways to blend in almost imperceptibly with their surrounding- without harm to the visual impression of the tourist destination".
Aerial lift
In an aerial transit system, cabins (also called carriers, vehicles, cable cars or simply cars) are suspended and propelled from above by cables. The cable that supports the cabin may or may not be the one that propels it too. This depends on the technology used. It is a two way transport.

The Terex S-24: an overview by Richard Campbell
Designed as a direct replacement for its existing S-18 single engined motor scraper, the Euclid (later Terex) S-24 had a long career and was the company’s most successful single engined, open bowl scraper.
Responding to industry requests for more horsepower and the fact that General Motors was going to discontinue manufacture of the series 6-110 engine, Euclid set about a redesign of the S-18 to utilise the new GM 12V-71 diesel engine. (The former 325 horsepower GM 6-110 had previously been the principal power unit for the S-18, SS-24 and TS-24 scrapers.)
Several pilot models were trialled until an acceptable layout was reached.
Euclid replaced the 3-speed Allison powershift transmission previously used with a 5-speed model increasing the unit’s top speed and made the 33.5×25 tyre standard (it was previously an option).
The GM 12V-71 engine chosen for the new machine put out 392 flywheel horsepower, a considerable increase over the former 6-110 engine, so Euclid took this opportunity to increase the carrying capacity of the bowl, boosting it from 18 cubic yards struck to 24 cubic yards struck.
However it still retained the S-18’s cable-operated apron.
In this format, the new machine was released to the contracting world in 1961 as the Euclid S-24 or Euclid model 39LOT-46SH.
Immediately successful, Euclid began producing the S-24 in quantity.
As with all good machines, there is always room for a little improvement and it wasn’t long before Euclid began tweaking the new S-24 to further increase its performance and customer acceptability.
The first minor alteration was in 1962 when the 5-speed Allison transmission was replaced by a 6-speed model, further increasing the machine’s top speed.
In 1963 the cable apron was replaced by a dual hydraulically actuated model, very similar to that which had been tried experimentally on the twin-powered TS-24 scraper.
An increase in engine horsepower was also made from 392 up to 423 flywheel horsepower. This was made possible by utilising the new N-series fuel injectors.
Euclid also added an extra air cleaner at this point to cater for the engine’s increased air demands.
The machine’s serial number designator was changed to reflect these modifications and became 39LOT-55SH.
Next major modification came in 1969 when the naturally aspirated 12V-71N engine was replaced by the turbocharged 12V-71T.
Horsepower remained the same but the engine now burned slightly less fuel, “breathed” better and was more efficient at altitude.
The scraper was structurally reinforced in a number of places and several hydraulic revisions were undertaken.
This machine was known as the S-24 model 49LOT-76SH and was the most numerous of all the S-24 models.
In order to remain competitive in the earthmoving marketplace, Terex (the name changed from Euclid to Terex in 1968) completely redesigned the S-24 in the late 1970s to incorporate a power down bowl and axle suspension.
The new machine was known as the Terex S-24B “Loadrunner” and bore very little resemblance to its predecessors other than its bowl capacity, 24 cubic yards.
Power was provided by a turbocharged 475 horsepower GM 12V-71T engine connected to an Allison CLT-5865 6-speed powershift transmission.

Standard tyre size was increased to 37.5×33.
A further revision of this design was introduced in 1986 as the Terex S-24C.
Terex offered an optional Cummins diesel for this model, the 480 horsepower KTA-19C and raised the heaped capacity to 34 cubic yards but it was all sadly to little avail.
Very few of these powerful and imposing looking scrapers were actually manufactured.
The S-24C was the last S-24 to be produced as not long after the company was wracked by bankruptcy, the IBH scandal, several takeovers and a general downturn in the earthmoving industry worldwide.
Production of the TS-24 and TS-14 models was moved to Terex’s still profitable Scottish plant and the S-24 was discontinued.
Unlike the S-24’s predecessor, the S-18 which was also manufactured for a time in the UK, the various models of S-24 were only produced at Terex’s Hudson, Ohio US facility.

So I waited in line for over an hour in San Fran to hop on the legendary Powell/Hyde St. Cable car. So glad I did. I was able to hop on the front and got some cool GoPro of the ride thru San Fran. I left the original audio in so you can hear the gears grinding and the bells chime as we go up and down the hills in the city, it gets pretty narley in places, like a roller coaster sort of... enjoy.

The Terex S-24: an overview by Richard Campbell
Designed as a direct replacement for its existing S-18 single engined motor scraper, the Euclid (later Terex) S-24 had a long career and was the company’s most successful single engined, open bowl scraper.
Responding to industry requests for more horsepower and the fact that General Motors was going to discontinue manufacture of the series 6-110 engine, Euclid set about a redesign of the S-18 to utilise the new GM 12V-71 diesel engine. (The former 325 horsepower GM 6-110 had previously been the principal power unit for the S-18, SS-24 and TS-24 scrapers.)
Several pilot models were trialled until an acceptable layout was reached.
Euclid replaced the 3-speed Allison powershift transmission previously used with a 5-speed model increasing the unit’s top speed and made the 33.5×25 tyre standard (it was previously an option).
The GM 12V-71 engine chosen for the new machine put out 392 flywheel horsepower, a considerable increase over the former 6-110 engine, so Euclid took this opportunity to increase the carrying capacity of the bowl, boosting it from 18 cubic yards struck to 24 cubic yards struck.
However it still retained the S-18’s cable-operated apron.
In this format, the new machine was released to the contracting world in 1961 as the Euclid S-24 or Euclid model 39LOT-46SH.
Immediately successful, Euclid began producing the S-24 in quantity.
As with all good machines, there is always room for a little improvement and it wasn’t long before Euclid began tweaking the new S-24 to further increase its performance and customer acceptability.
The first minor alteration was in 1962 when the 5-speed Allison transmission was replaced by a 6-speed model, further increasing the machine’s top speed.
In 1963 the cable apron was replaced by a dual hydraulically actuated model, very similar to that which had been tried experimentally on the twin-powered TS-24 scraper.
An increase in engine horsepower was also made from 392 up to 423 flywheel horsepower. This was made possible by utilising the new N-series fuel injectors.
Euclid also added an extra air cleaner at this point to cater for the engine’s increased air demands.
The machine’s serial number designator was changed to reflect these modifications and became 39LOT-55SH.
Next major modification came in 1969 when the naturally aspirated 12V-71N engine was replaced by the turbocharged 12V-71T.
Horsepower remained the same but the engine now burned slightly less fuel, “breathed” better and was more efficient at altitude.
The scraper was structurally reinforced in a number of places and several hydraulic revisions were undertaken.
This machine was known as the S-24 model 49LOT-76SH and was the most numerous of all the S-24 models.
In order to remain competitive in the earthmoving marketplace, Terex (the name changed from Euclid to Terex in 1968) completely redesigned the S-24 in the late 1970s to incorporate a power down bowl and axle suspension.
The new machine was known as the Terex S-24B “Loadrunner” and bore very little resemblance to its predecessors other than its bowl capacity, 24 cubic yards.
Power was provided by a turbocharged 475 horsepower GM 12V-71T engine connected to an Allison CLT-5865 6-speed powershift transmission.

Standard tyre size was increased to 37.5×33.
A further revision of this design was introduced in 1986 as the Terex S-24C.
Terex offered an optional Cummins diesel for this model, the 480 horsepower KTA-19C and raised the heaped capacity to 34 cubic yards but it was all sadly to little avail.
Very few of these powerful and imposing looking scrapers were actually manufactured.
The S-24C was the last S-24 to be produced as not long after the company was wracked by bankruptcy, the IBH scandal, several takeovers and a general downturn in the earthmoving industry worldwide.
Production of the TS-24 and TS-14 models was moved to Terex’s still profitable Scottish plant and the S-24 was discontinued.
Unlike the S-24’s predecessor, the S-18 which was also manufactured for a time in the UK, the various models of S-24 were only produced at Terex’s Hudson, Ohio US facility.

So I waited in line for over an hour in San Fran to hop on the legendary Powell/Hyde St. Cable car. So glad I did. I was able to hop on the front and got some cool GoPro of the ride thru San Fran. I left the original audio in so you can hear the gears grinding and the bells chime as we go up and down the hills in the city, it gets pretty narley in places, like a roller coaster sort of... enjoy.

HSCC 1300cc Beetle Croft Nostalgia Weekend (Race 1) 2014
My first time at Croft and the track couldn't have been more slippy, so being 'a noob' I started second from last but thanks to the Beetles wet weather traction I managed to make up 6 places off the start. AC/DC Legend Brian Johnson out-braked me in his Austin Cooper S into Tower Corner and Ian Gunton picked me off a few laps later in his rapid 1040cc Hillman Imp, but I had a great dice with Bob Bullens lively 1500cc Ford Anglia for most of the race and cautiously passed him a few laps from the end (cautious because we had another race the following day and I didn't want to bin it) The Beetle likes the wet but I do need to adjust my throttle pedal again as I wasn't able to use heal-&-toe braking (which is why I kept snatching the rear on the downshifts). Born in a prominent Bengali family, Subhas had dedicated much of his younger years by being actively involved in ridding the British from India. For this purpose he joined hands with stalwarts such as Jawaharlal Nehru and Mohandas Gandhi, but expressed his frustration, especially with Gandhi's slow and painstaking way of trying to win over the enemy with love. It is for this reason, he decided to separate from the Congress Party. The British became weary of him, placed him under arrest, but when he started a hunger strike unto death, they let him go, but kept him under surveillance. Subhas eluded the police, under the guise of Pathan Mohammad Ziauddin, crossed the Indian border in Afghanistan so that he could enter Russia and form an Indian Army to oust the British. His efforts failed, he ended up as Italian Orlando Mashtar, with an office in Germany. This movie is an out and out biographical war film about the Hero, Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose.

Dazu zählen neben einem Intercity der Baureihe 103, Dieselloks, Dampfloks, u.a. auch eine Köf, ein TEE oder der Rheingold-Express inkl. Dampflok aus dem 1950er Jahren. Die Zuglängen gehen bis 3,50 Meter Länge und bilden so einen realistischen Zugverkehr ab.
Ein Faller Car System lässt zudem LKW und Busse über die Anlage fahren. Und auch die Tag- und Nachtsimulationen sind hier eingebaut. Alle 15 Minuten wird es für ca. 2 Minuten Dunkel.
Modellbahner Jürgen Horn baut seit 2001 an dieser Anlage und hat sich damit einen Kindheitstraum erfüllt. Und der Bau geht nach wie vor weiter. Demnächst ist eine weitere Anlage nach US-Motiv mit der legendären und weltweit stärksten Dampflokomotive Big Boy (Klasse 4000 der Union Pacific Railroad) geplant.

Die Anlage kann gänzjährig (bis auf 3 Wochen in den Sommerferien sowie 24./25.31.12.) von Freitags bis Sonntags besichtigt werden. Der Eintritt für Erwachsene beträgt moderate 5,- Euro. Für Kinder, Familien

Daneben werden auch Modellbahn-Workshops, Dioramen- und Anlagenbau angeboten. Und im angeschlossenen Café Märchenstube gibt es leckeren selbstgebackenen Kuchen zu sehr familienfreundlichen Preisen und eine superfreundliche Bewirtung. Von mir daher eine absolute Besuchsempfehlung. Da lohnt sich auch eine längere Anfahrt. 2 Stunden sollte man aber schon für die Besichtigung dieser Modellbahnschauanlage berücksichtigen.

Ein Faller Car System lässt zudem LKW und Busse über die Anlage fahren. Und auch die Tag- und Nachtsimulationen sind hier eingebaut. Alle 15 Minuten wird es für ca. 2 Minuten Dunkel.
Modellbahner Jürgen Horn baut seit 2001 an dieser Anlage und hat sich damit einen Kindheitstraum erfüllt. Und der Bau geht nach wie vor weiter. Demnächst ist eine weitere Anlage nach US-Motiv mit der legendären und weltweit stärksten Dampflokomotive Big Boy (Klasse 4000 der Union Pacific Railroad) geplant.

Die Anlage kann gänzjährig (bis auf 3 Wochen in den Sommerferien sowie 24./25.31.12.) von Freitags bis Sonntags besichtigt werden. Der Eintritt für Erwachsene beträgt moderate 5,- Euro. Für Kinder, Familien

Daneben werden auch Modellbahn-Workshops, Dioramen- und Anlagenbau angeboten. Und im angeschlossenen Café Märchenstube gibt es leckeren selbstgebackenen Kuchen zu sehr familienfreundlichen Preisen und eine superfreundliche Bewirtung. Von mir daher eine absolute Besuchsempfehlung. Da lohnt sich auch eine längere Anfahrt. 2 Stunden sollte man aber schon für die Besichtigung dieser Modellbahnschauanlage berücksichtigen.

My first time at Croft and the track couldn't have been more slippy, so being 'a noob' I started second from last but thanks to the Beetles wet weather traction I managed to make up 6 places off the start. AC/DC Legend Brian Johnson out-braked me in his Austin Cooper S into Tower Corner and Ian Gunton picked me off a few laps later in his rapid 1040cc Hillman Imp, but I had a great dice with Bob Bullens lively 1500cc Ford Anglia for most of the race and cautiously passed him a few laps from the end (cautious because we had another race the following day and I didn't want to bin it)
The Beetle likes the wet but I do need to adjust my throttle pedal again as I wasn't able to use heal-&-toe braking (which is why I kept snatching the rear on the downshifts). I was testing a few new parts this weekend from Custom&Speed Parts in Germany which consisted of a Porsche 911 cooling fan conversion and matching 'bell-crank' throttle linkage, the Porsche cooling fan sounds like a supercharger at the RPM's I'm pulling and despite the extra air flow it didn't seem to rob the car of any noticeable power...Oil temperature is 10 degrees cooler than my stock VW fan used to manage as well. The new CSP throttle linkage is much smoother than my old hex-bar linkage which is especially useful in the wet. I just need to re-route the throttle cable before the next race and it will be perfect. The CSP fan and throttle linkage also shaved 20lb (9kg) off the back of the car so I couldn't be happier.
