Wood drying (also seasoning lumber or wood seasoning) reduces the moisture content of wood before its use. When the drying is done in a kiln, the product is known as kiln-dried timber or lumber, whereas air dying is the more traditional method.
There are two main reasons for drying wood:
I've been air drying my own lumber for about 4 years now. In this video I share an overview of the process which should help demystify and make the process more approachable. People hear the word "kiln" and immediately shy away, assuming something that is too expensive, complex, or massive. But a wood kiln is not any of those things. Simple and effective, you just need heat lamps, a dehumidifier, a fan, and an insulated are to set it up. Drying wood is one of those endeavors where the do-it-yourselfer can actually do a better job than the commercial guys. The businesses have time pressure to get product out the door, so they dry their wood quickly, often case-hardening it. Case-hardening is when the outer wood dries too quickly and it builds up tension as it shrinks disproportionately relative to the internal part of the board. Then when the board it cut, the internal tension causes it to twist and bow. The best quality wood is dried SLOWLY, at least ...

In this video I converted an old freezer into a Kiln. All you need is a heat source, and a few holes for airflow. Adding a fan would really help out too. The whole project took me less than an hour. Learn how to dry wood fast in the microwave. Microwave drying works pretty well for smaller projects and if you are turning wooden bowls. Fresh green wood can contain 30-40% water, so it will shrink and lose a lot of weight. If you can remove material before you put it in the microwave, you should. Remember that the wood also will twist and warp so don't put your finished piece in there. I would say this is relatively safe as long as you keep the heating to around 1 minute and cool the wood down for 5-10 min. Between each cycle (and always keep an eye on the microwave when heating.) This video is about Wood Drying Vacuum VS Silica Gel rcwarshpp: Vacuum drying wood might be worth a go since you have a vacuum pump & chamber. I just finished running an experiment and found that it doesn't work worth a darn until you add heat. I use a pressure cooker & have a 40 watt bulb inside. Gets it plenty warm, had a couple blocks (3 1/4" square by 6") green freshly cut ash dry in 4 days. Pulled off 2 or 3 cups of water.....amazing. Had to reapply vacuum 3 or 4 times daily since the water boiled off & was pulled out by the vacuum pump.....or my pressure cooker setup leaks. The vacuum pump oil will need changing out on a regular basis since it gets full o'crap. Thanks & Best Regards, Jon dc9apu +rcwarship: Jon: My father use to say that when I screwed something up. Cumberland Valley Wood Turners, wood, wood blanks, green wood, turning green wood, preparing green wood, drying wood,
Here's a random grouping of information and thoughts on how i find wood, dry it and cut it and make it smaller and carve it. i like to find wood instead of buying it. i like to use hand tools instead of power tools.
Dry, fast, rocky and mint.
This platter was the most challenging wood turning I have done to date. the wood being very dry and it being all end grain pushed my wood turning abilities to my limit. Turning a 14" platter on a 12" lathe sure feels good. Unfortunately I was not able to recover the first CD from my camera.
It was dry! full on fun on a sunday
My approaches to wood turning, tool control to eliminate tear out in wood with spalting and dry rot. Warning be ready for a long show LOL Merry Christmas
The woods were rocky and dusty and the hill-climb was dry and loose. I had a great start and got a 2nd! Thanks for watching and commenting!
