He was born the third son of Isle of Wight hoteliers Hubert George Cookson Bate (son of George Harry Bate, a hairdresser and trichologist, of Stourbridge; died 1986) and Cecile Marjorie Canadine (died 1973). Bate was educated at King Edward VI School, Stourbridge, and trained at the Central School of Speech and Drama (Gold medal). During his National Service he served with the Royal Navy Volunteer Reserve 1945-47.

Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy is a 1974 spy novel by British author John le Carré. It follows the efforts of taciturn, aging spymaster George Smiley to uncover a Soviet mole in the British Secret Intelligence Service. Since the time of its publication, the novel has received critical acclaim for its complexity, social commentary and lack of sensationalism, and remains a staple of the spy fiction genre.
Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy was followed by two sequels, The Honourable Schoolboy (1977) and Smiley's People (1979), later published in an omnibus edition as Smiley Versus Karla (1982). These are the fifth, sixth, and seventh le Carré spy novels featuring George Smiley. Three characters who are important players in TTSS first appeared in le Carré's very first book, Call for the Dead (1961): George Smiley, Peter Guillam, and Inspector Mendel.
Control, chief of the Circus, assigns the code names "Tinker", "Tailor", "Soldier", "Poor Man", and "Beggar Man" to five senior intelligence officers at the Circus. He suspects that one of the five is a Soviet mole and assigns these code names with the intention that, should his agent Jim Prideaux uncover information about the identity of the mole, Prideaux can relay it back to the Circus using an easy-to-recall codename. The names are derived from the English children's rhyme "Tinker, Tailor":
"Tinker Tailor" is a counting game, nursery rhyme and fortune telling song traditionally played in England, that can be used to count cherry stones, buttons, daisy petals and other items. It has a Roud Folk Song Index number of 802. Its American version is commonly used by children for "counting out," e.g. for choosing who shall be "It" in a game of tag.
The most common modern version is:
The most common American version is:
Skipping version from the 70's:
A similar rhyme has been noted in William Caxton's, The Game and Playe of the Chesse (c. 1475), in which pawns are named: "Labourer, Smith, Clerk, Merchant, Physician, Taverner, Guard and Ribald."
The first record of the opening four professions being grouped together is in William Congreve's Love for Love (1695), which has the lines:
When James Orchard Halliwell collected the rhyme in the 1840s, it was for counting buttons with the lines: "My belief - a captain, a colonel, a cow-boy, a thief." The version printed by William Wells Newell in Games and Songs of American Children in 1883 was: "Rich man, Poor man, beggar-man, thief, Doctor, lawyer (or merchant), Indian chief", and it may be from American tradition that the modern lyrics solidified.

The United States of America (USA), commonly referred to as the United States (U.S.) or America, is a federal republic composed of 50 states, a federal district, five major territories and various possessions. The 48 contiguous states and Washington, D.C., are in central North America between Canada and Mexico. The state of Alaska is in the northwestern part of North America and the state of Hawaii is an archipelago in the mid-Pacific. The territories are scattered about the Pacific Ocean and the Caribbean Sea. At 3.8 million square miles (9.842 million km2) and with over 320 million people, the country is the world's third or fourth-largest by total area and the third most populous. It is one of the world's most ethnically diverse and multicultural nations, the product of large-scale immigration from many countries. The geography and climate of the United States are also extremely diverse, and the country is home to a wide variety of wildlife.

Anthony Bate plays Harry, a writer suffering from a years-long writers' block. At times we see his muse, who seems more elusive than helpful. Or is that just my view? Can it be she's taunting him? Or is he finally slipping into the madness of breakdown? As his mental state deteriorates his agent and sister become vaguely sinister figures, while the external world seems oddly alien. Can find no trace of a DVD release for this and it seems possible it's another of the items lost in the BBC turn-out of some years back, when so many pieces of archived film and tape were trashed. Finding the perfect actors for your show is a painstaking art: A few right moves, and you can back up an Emmy truck next to that Brinks truck. A couple of wrong moves, and the whole project is a disaster. Bates Motel executive producers Carlton Cuse and Kerry Ehrin certainly had their hands full when they set out to cast their contemporary Pyscho prequel for A&E;. At Comic-Con on Friday, they treated the audience to a behind-the-scenes look at Bates’ audition process, screening footage of Vera Farmiga, Freddie Highmore, Nestor Carbonell, Olivia Cooke, and Max Thieriot trying on their character for the first time. They show off their acting skills… and Ukranian folk-dancing skills… and Spider-Man impressions. Want to see a true horror show? Watch their auditions below. Source: http://inside...
