The Greater Accra Region has the smallest area of Ghana's 10 administrative regions, occupying a total land surface of 3,245 square kilometres or 1.4 per cent of the total land area of Ghana. It is the second most populated region, after the Ashanti Region, with a population of 2,905,726 in 2000, accounting for 15.4 per cent of Ghana’s total population. The Greater Accra Region was part of the Eastern Region prior to 1982 and Greater Accra region was created from the Eastern Region in 1982 and currently harbors the seat of government in Accra.
In 1960, Greater Accra, then referred to as Accra Capital District, was geographically and legally part of the Eastern Region. It was, however, administered separately by the Minister responsible for local government. With effect from 23 July 1982, Greater Accra was created by the Greater Accra Region Law (PNDCL 26) as a legally separate region.
The Greater Accra Region is bordered on the north by the Eastern Region, on the east by the Lake Volta, on the south by the Gulf of Guinea, and on the west by the Central Region. It is smallest region of Ghana in total area, and is made up of 16 administrative areas.
Accra /əˈkrɑː/ is the capital and largest city of Ghana, with an estimated urban population of 2.27 million as of 2012. It is also the capital of the Greater Accra Region and of the Accra Metropolitan District, with which it is coterminous. Accra is furthermore the anchor of a larger metropolitan area, the Greater Accra Metropolitan Area (GAMA), which is inhabited by about 4 million people, making it the second-largest metropolitan conglomeration in Ghana by population, and the eleventh-largest metropolitan area in Africa.
Accra stretches along the Ghanaian Atlantic coast and extends north into Ghana's interior. Originally built around a port, it served as the capital of the British Gold Coast between 1877 and 1957. Once merely a 19th-century suburb of Victoriaborg, Accra has since transitioned into a modern metropolis; the city's architecture reflects this history, ranging from 19th-century architecture buildings to modern skyscrapers and apartment blocks.
Accra serves as the Greater Accra region's economic and administrative hub. It is furthermore a centre of a wide range of nightclubs, restaurants, and hotels. Since the early 1990s, a number of new buildings have been built, including the multi-storey French-owned Novotel hotel. The city's National Theatre was built with Chinese assistance. In 2010, the Globalization and World Cities Research Network designated Accra a Gamma-minus-level world city, indicating a growing level of international influence and connectedness.
Greater may refer to:
Kwame Nkrumah PC (September 18 or 21, 1909 – 27 April 1972) led Ghana to independence from Britain in 1957 and served as its first prime minister and president. Nkrumah first gained power as leader of the colonial Gold Coast, and held it until he was deposed in 1966.
An influential 20th-century advocate of Pan-Africanism, he was a founding member of the Organization of African Unity and was the winner of the Lenin Peace Prize in 1962.
According to intelligence documents released by the American Office of the Historian, "Nkrumah was doing more to undermine [US government] interests than any other black African."
Kwame Nkrumah was born in about 1909 in Nkroful, Gold Coast. Although his mother, whose name was Nyanibah, later stated his year of birth was 1912, Nkrumah wrote that he was born on 18 September 1909, a Saturday, and by the naming customs of the Akan people was given the name Kwame, that being the name given to males born on a Saturday. During his years as a student in the United States, though, he was known as Francis Nwia Kofi Nkrumah, with Kofi being the name given to males born on Friday. The name of his father is not known; most accounts say he was a goldsmith. According to Ebenezer Obiri Addo in his study of the future president, the name "Nkrumah", a name traditionally given to a ninth child, indicates that Kwame likely held that place in the house of his father, who had several wives. Kwame, though, was the only child of his mother.

The Greater Accra Region in Ghana is one of the fastest growing cities in West Africa, currently hosting over 4 million people. The regional economy accounts for about 25 percent of Ghana's national GDP. However, the unprecedented population growth and unplanned spatial expansion have exceeded the capacity of the city to keep up, resulting in housing shortages, urban sprawl, and informal settlements with inadequate urban services. This makes the Greater Accra Region vulnerable to a range of shocks. This was made clear in June 2015 when the region was deeply impacted by floods which affected over 50,000 people. Working with the World Bank, the Government of Ghana has identified the main issues that make the Greater Accra region vulnerable and formed a forward-looking strategy to create a mo...

Merit Award of Excellence for New Work The Greater Accra Regional Hospital Accra, Ghana Identified as the main central healthcare facility in the city of Accra, this hospital expands the city’s facilities to 600 beds and more than 12 surgical theaters totaling over 460,000 square feet. The project engages with the original qualities of the site, fine-tuning the way it responds to the requirements and expectations of patients and their families, medical, administrative and support staff. Breezeways, public corridors, and waiting areas are passively cooled by natural ventilation and formally articulated as a series of layers reinterpreting the vernacular response to the place, where transitional spaces for gathering have a cultural significance. The remains of fortified trading-posts, erected between 1482 and 1786, can still be seen along the coast of Ghana between Keta and Beyin. They were links in the trade routes established by the Portuguese in many areas of the world during their era of great maritime exploration.
