‘American Crime Story: Katrina’ Sets New Source Material, Sarah Paulson Still Attached to Star

“American Crime Story: Katrina” is moving forward with new source material and a major cast overhaul, Variety has confirmed.

The planned third season of the Ryan Murphy FX anthology series will now be based on the book “Five Days at Memorial” by Sheri Fink. Scott Rudin, who previously acquired the rights to the book, will now join “Katrina” as an executive producer alongside Murphy, Brad Simpson, and Nina Jacobson. Fink is also expected to be involved in the project. The season was originally to be based on the book “The Great Deluge” by Douglas Brinkley.

“Five Days at Memorial” chronicles the real-life aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, focusing on the Memorial Medical Center in New Orleans. Marvin “Krondon” Jones III has been cast as Tobias Whale for the first season of “Black Lightning.”

As Tobias Whale, Jones will serve as the big bad facing off against Jefferson Pierce, a.k.a. Black Lightning (Cress Williams). Whale — an African-American man with albinism — is the leader of a gang called The 100, but before that he was a corrupt politician who was brought down by Alvin Pierce, Black Lightning’s father. Enraged, Whale murders Alvin Pierce and goes to ground, but when Black Lightning comes out of retirement Whale also returns to face his biggest adversary.

“I was excited about Krondon when I saw his audition. He’s going to make a great Tobias,” executive producer Salim Akil said. “His authentic street sensibility along with an insightful intelligence is perfect for the Tobias character arc. 'Queen of the South' Renewed for Season 3 at USA Network

USA Network is keeping its queen in the house.

The NBCUniversal-owned cable network has renewed cartel drama Queen of the South for a third season. It will return in 2018.

Co-produced by Universal Cable Productions and Fox 21 Television Studios, the Alice Braga starrer ranks as Thursday's top cable series among the advertiser-coveted adults 18-49 demographic when factoring in three days of DVR. The series averages 2 million total viewers this season.

Showrunner Natalie Chaidez, who replaced Scott Rosenbaum this season, will be back. She exec produces alongside David T. Friendly and Pancho Mansfield.

HBO is turning the podcast “2 Dope Queens,” featuring Jessica Williams and Phoebe Robinson, into a series of specials.

The four hour-long specials based on the weekly stand-up and storytelling podcast will launch in 2018, HBO announced on Thursday.

‘Westworld’ Season 2 Adds Three Actors, Including ‘Vikings’ Star

Westworld” Season 2 is rounding out its cast with the addition of three new actors, Variety has confirmed.

Gustaf Skarsgård (pictured above), Fares Fares, and Betty Gabriel will all be joining the HBO series’ sophomore season. Skarsgård, known for playing Floki on the History series “Vikings,” will play Karl Strand, described as a white-collar guy comfortable in the field. Fares, who has appeared on the FX series “Tyrant” and in “Rogue One,” will play Antoine Costa, a tech expert. Gabriel, who most recently appeared in the blockbuster film “Get Out,” will be playing Maling, who is trying to restore order on the ground.

Skarsgård and Fares will be series regulars, while Gabriel will be recurring. Skarsgård is repped by Mgmt. Entertainment and Agentfirman Planthaber/Kildén/Mandic in Sweden. Fares is repped by Magnolia Entertainment. Gabriel is repped by Greene & Associates Talent and Generate.
