Ordinary People is a 1980 American drama film that marked the directorial debut of actor Robert Redford. It stars Donald Sutherland, Mary Tyler Moore, Judd Hirsch and Timothy Hutton.
The story concerns the disintegration of an upper-middle class family in Lake Forest, Illinois, following the death of one of their sons in a boating accident. The screenplay by Alvin Sargent was based upon the 1976 novel Ordinary People by Judith Guest.
The film received six Academy Award nominations and won four: the Academy Award for Best Picture, the Best Director for Redford, the Best Writing (Adapted Screenplay) for Sargent, and the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for Hutton. In addition, it won five Golden Globes: Best Motion Picture – Drama, Golden Globe Award for Best Director (Redford), Best Actress in a Drama (Tyler Moore), Best Supporting Actor (Hutton), and Best Screenplay (Sargent).
The Jarretts are an upper-middle-class family in suburban Chicago trying to return to normal life after the death of one teenage son and the attempted suicide of their surviving son, Conrad (Timothy Hutton). Conrad has recently returned home from a four-month stay in a psychiatric hospital. He feels alienated from his friends and family and begins seeing a psychiatrist, Dr. Berger (Judd Hirsch). Berger learns that Conrad was involved in a sailing accident in which his older brother, Buck, whom everyone idolized, died. Conrad now deals with post-traumatic stress disorder and survivor's guilt.
A people is a plurality of persons considered as a whole, as is the case with an ethnic group or nation. Collectively, for example, the contemporary Frisians and Danes are two related Germanic peoples, while various Middle Eastern ethnic groups are often linguistically categorized as the Semitic people. See the list of contemporary ethnic groups for more examples.
Various republics govern, or claim to govern, in the name of the people. Both the Roman Republic and the Roman Empire used the Latin term Senatus Populusque Romanus, (the Senate and People of Rome). This term was fixed to Roman legionary standards, and even after the Roman Emperors achieved a state of total personal autarchy, they continued to wield their power in the name of the Senate and People of Rome.
A People's Republic is typically a Marxist or socialist one-party state that claims to govern on behalf of the people. Populism is another umbrella term for various political tendencies that claim to represent the people, usually with an implication that they serve the common people instead of the elite.
Ordinary may refer to:
"Ordinary People" is a song by American recording artist John Legend. It was written and produced by Legend and will.i.am for his debut album Get Lifted (2004). It was released as the album's second single and later certified gold by the RIAA. Critics were positive towards the song, praising it for its raw emotion and simplicity. "Ordinary People" won the Grammy Award for Best Male R&B Vocal Performance.
The video for "Ordinary People" features Legend playing a grand piano in an all-white space, while couples and families fight and reconcile around and in front of the piano. For the final minute of the video, Legend is joined by a string section and (audibly) a harmonica. Legend walks to and from the piano with a glass of water, as a short bookending to the video proper.
John Roger Stephens (born December 28, 1978), better known by his stage name John Legend, is an American singer, songwriter and actor. He has won nine Grammy Awards, one Golden Globe, and one Academy Award. In 2007, Legend received the Hal David Starlight Award from the Songwriters Hall of Fame.
Prior to the release of Legend's debut album, his career gained momentum through a series of successful collaborations with multiple established artists. He sang in Magnetic Man's "Getting Nowhere," Kanye West's "All of the Lights", on Slum Village's "Selfish", and Dilated Peoples' "This Way". Other artists included Jay Z's "Encore", and he sang backing vocals on Alicia Keys' 2003 song "You Don't Know My Name", the Kanye West remix of Britney Spears' "Me Against the Music", and Fort Minor's "High Road". Legend played piano on Lauryn Hill's "Everything Is Everything". He has gained chart topping hits from his solo work as well, including the Billboard Hot 100 number-one single, "All of Me". He won the Academy Award for Best Original Song in 2015 for writing the song "Glory" from the film Selma.

Below are a few questions you can think about or go through with your friends and family. - What is God’s purpose for traditions? What Christmas traditions are you celebrating with your family this year that have been passed down through the generations before you? Name one tradition that God passed down to the Israelites. - In Luke’s Christmas story, we see Mary who is chosen by God to share in His great plan of redemption for mankind. Yet she finds herself confused and fearful when the only place He has prepared for her special child’s birth is a lowly stable. When did you follow a path of faith, just as Mary did, only to find yourself in...

This short film depicts the horrors of online ‘catfishing’ and it’s repercussions on ordinary social media users. We are at a point in our generation where technology is becoming fully integrated with our social lives, meaning we are constantly connected. With such a digital transcendence however, comes the downside. The more you become intimately connected to your technology, the more you get closer to the rest of the 2 billion internet users, with 1/3 of them posting regularly as anonymous users. This piece was produced in response to a major project at Edinburgh Napier University. The topic explored keyboard culture and the mystified secrets everyone holds about their online interactions. Catfishing may seem like something from the dark corners of the internet, but it is a lot closer th...

What you see may only be skin deep
But what you feel inside is there for keeps
Can't know happiness 'till you've been sad
But tears drown all the joy you ever had
Talkin' about people
Who spreads wanton hurt?
Talkin' about people
Still waiting for their turn
Talkin' about people
Living in uncertainty
Ordinary people
People like you and me
Seen your life before you slip away
Hanging on to every Irish day
Can't keep up the face
But can't slow down
Life's a rat race there's no short way around
Talkin' about people
Who didn't make the grade?
Talkin' about people
Who's just another paid?
Talkin about people
Holdin' on for dignity
Ordinary people
People like you and me
You may have nothing else but you've got pride
You have nothing else but you've got pride
Until there's nothing to sacrifice
We'll survive
We'll survive
Talkin' about people
Talkin' about people
Existing from day to day
Talkin' about people
Who lost their way?
Talkin' about people
Living by destiny
Ordinary people
Like you and me
When hunger bites you deep down inside
You may have nothing else but you've got pride
And when there's nowhere to run or hide
You'll find there's no short cut and there's no
Rewrite
Until there's nothing to sacrifice
We'll survive
Never give up till it's gone
Together we'll be strong
We'll survive

In this we breathe the same air
We cherish our children
Never give up until it's gone
