The Gers (French: le Gers, pronounced: [ʒɛʁs] or [ʒɛʁ]; Gascon: Gers) is a department in the Languedoc-Roussillon-Midi-Pyrénées region in the southwest of France named after the Gers River.
Inhabitants are called les Gersois.
History
In the Middle Ages, the Lordship of L'Isle-Jourdain was nearby.
The Gers is one of the original 83 departments created during the French Revolution on 4 March 1790. It was created from parts of the former provinces of Guyenne and Gascony.
In 1808 it lost Lavit on its north-eastern side to the newly created department of Tarn-et-Garonne.
Culture
The culture is largely agricultural, with great emphasis on the local gastronomical specialties such as:
Also, some prominent cultivated crops are corn, colza, sunflowers and grain.
The Gascon language is a dialect of Occitan, but it is not widely spoken. The department is characterised by sleepy bastide villages and rolling hills with the Pyrenees visible to the south.

Gers Pardoel
Gerwin Pardoel (born 12 May 1981), better known by his stage name Gers Pardoel or mononymously as Gers, is a Dutch rapper. He rose to fame in 2009, due to his successful collaboration with The Opposites on the single "Broodje Bakpao". Pardoel's debut studio album Deze wereld is van jou was released in November 2011 and was certified Platinum by the NVPI. The Nederhop artist is best known for his number-one single "Ik neem je mee", which became the most succesfull Dutch-language hit in the Dutch Top 40 ever.
Biography
1981–2002: Early life
Gerwin Pardoel was born on 12 May 1981 in Nijmegen, thirty-five minutes before his younger twin brother Robbie. When Pardoel was young, his father was purchaser at a nursing home. Later, his father went working for the theme park De Efteling in Kaatsheuvel. His mother was housewife and took care of the children.
When Pardoel was 17 years old, his life was rudely disturbed by his mother's death. She died from cancer. His life was turned upside down and the relation with his father deteriorated enormously. To escape from his difficult home situation, Pardoel looked for refuge in roller skating. He was a very fanatical roller skater and wanted to reach the Dutch roller skating top. Together with Steffen Haars and Huub Smit (nowadays known as the characters of New Kids), he practiced almost every day in an inline skate hall in 's-Hertogenbosch. The hall became a "new home" for Pardoel. He reached the ninth position in a national roller skating competition.

Opening:
After nearly a year of backpacking around Asia, we found ourselves rolling into Ulan Bator, the capital city of Mongolia, a country synonymous with Genghis Khan (known as Chinggis Khan in Mongolia) , wide open spaces, and Nomadic life. Of the 3 million people that call Mongolia home, nearly half live in UB, making it the cultural, financial and industrial center of Mongolia, so it’s no surprise that this city is the first stop for most foreign visitors. In our case, we entered the country from China after a 48 hour marathon of bus and train travel that started from Beijing, so as soon as we arrived, the ONLY thing we could think about was to getting to the nearest hostel to sleep. So we did. For 2 days.
Leaving UB:
Once we got our strength up we did some research and found that our hostel was offering a tour of the gobi desert as well as other parts of central Mongolia; a journey that would take 16 days; we’d decided to go with 6 other travelers that we’d met a couple of days beforehand, but with only one day to prepare and zero winter clothes, we desperately needed to gear up...
Market:
“Naran Tuul zach (зах or Khar Zakh)” is a sprawling flea market where you can find wall clocks, linoleum flooring and just about anything else. The market has gained a bad reputation among locals and foreigners alike for being a pickpocket’s haven, so with such a rough exterior and shady nickname like “black market”, we figured we’d be able to bargain our way into some amazing deal, but we soon discovered that this wasn’t the case...
Lunch:
Because Mongolian culture is based on livestock farming, the traditional diet consists of meat, flour and dairy with mutton being the meat of choice. Mongolian winters are extremely harsh so a lot of animal fat is consumed during winter and more dairy products during the summer.
Closing:
What… a… day. It was a long journey, but the scenery was stunning and the Mongolian countryside made quite the first impression on us. But this was only just the beginning and we couldn’t wait to see what the next 15 days would bring...

In Ulaanbaatar, the Nadaam Festival begins where virtuoso throat singers and horse headed fiddlers set the contestants in the right mood and a typical snake woman from Mongolia’s state circus school performs amazing acrobatic contortions. This has been an amazing visit to an exotic and little known world. And this capital city, with all of its incredible contrasts, seems almost unreal. But Ulaanbaatar is very much ‘here, now and heading for the future’!

About an hour from Ulaanbaatar in Tov Province is the calm and tranquil, Manzushir, a charming area that is totally different to the densely populated metropolis. In addition to several tent-like huts, or gers, it is mainly the centuries old scattered remains from the high season of Buddhism that capture the attention. The landscape enchants with its exotic splendour. Since 1997 the Khogno Khan Nature Reserve has been protected. It is part of the province of Bulgan one of twenty one provinces known as aimags. The natural landscape is beautiful, which is hardly surprising as Mongolia is the most sparsely settled country in the world. Hunting with eagles is both common and traditional. Each October before the hunting season begins a popular eagle hunting festival takes place in Bayan Oglii. The birds with which the Kazakhs hunt are golden eagles that have a wing span of more than two metres. Mongolia is truly a land of nomads, wonderful wilderness, unspoiled landscapes, centuries old traditions as well as fascinating cultural treasures and sanctuaries.
