In which John Green teaches you about the Holy Roman Empire by teaching you about Charles V. Charles Hapsburg was the holy Roman Emperor, but he was also the King of Spain. And the King of Germany. And the King of Italy and the Lord of the Netherlands and Count Palatine of Burgundy. In short, Charles was runnin' thangs in much of the world during his reign. Charles ruled a lot of countries, and he was also known for encouraging intellectual discourse and he even spoke out against slavery, in a limited. So why did he consider himself a failure, and why did he break up the Empire when he abdicated in 1556? Mainly because the Holy Roman Empire didn't work very well. It was huge, and it didn't have any means of directly raising taxes. Plus, it was a pretty crazy time in Europe anyway, and Charles found himself in charge of the Catholic-Church-Endorsed Empire in the time of Martin Luther and the Protestant Reformation. John will teach you a bit about how Charles put the Empire together, and how it fell apart, and even talk a bit about the Diet of Worms.

Britain's Queen Elizabeth II 63 years, the longest-ruling monarchy with German Blood DNA
A recent discovery in August 2012, of King Richard III dead body, was found under a car park in Leicester. The search was initiated by the Looking for Richard project with the support of the Richard III Society.
He was the last English king of the House of York and the last of the Plantagenet dynasty, who was killed in battle of the Wars of the Roses in 1485.
Preliminary DNA analysis showed that mitochondrial DNA extracted from the bones matched that of two matrilineal descendants, one 17th-generation and the other 19th-generation, of Richard's sister Anne of York.
The DNA confirmed that the current royal Dynasty does not have a British royal bloodline, and that Queen Elizabeth II did not descended from previous Tudor or Plantagenet kings and queens.
So where did the current British queen come from?
She was born in London, served as a mechanic in the war and prefers dogs to humans. How much more British could Her Majesty be?
The obvious place to start is the family tree, although unfolding it is enough to make even the most seasoned genealogist reach for a stiff drink. Yet what comes across very clearly — and very quickly — is that there is a lot of German in it.
There is no real starting point, but we may as well begin with 1714. At the age of 54, after the death of Queen Anne died, and her direct Stuart line came to an end.
Although over fifty Roman Catholics bore closer blood relationships to Anne, the Act of Settlement 1701 prohibited Catholics from inheriting the British throne; George was Anne's closest living Protestant relative.
They were passed over, and in the end Georg Ludwig, the Protestant Prince Elector of Hanover, our royal house changed from Stuart to Brunswick-Luneburg-Hanover, bringing with it a wealth of connections to the ancient royal houses of Welf and Este.
Until recently, members of the Royal Family had no surname. They customarily used first names and the name of their house, which was inherited from the father (Richard the Lionheart was a Plantagenet, Henry VIII was a Tudor, George I was a Hanover).
Accordingly, the House of Hanover ended with Queen Victoria, and her descendants took the dynastic name of her husband, Prince Albert, which was also German: Saxe-Coburg-Gotha.
How German is the Queen?
House of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha is a German dynasty, the line of the Saxon House of Wettin that ruled the Ernestine duchies including the duchy of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha.
Later, as a result of the First World War (1914–18), the empires of his first cousins Tsar Nicholas II of Russia and Kaiser Wilhelm II of Germany fell while the British Empire expanded to its greatest effective extent.
In 1917, the House of Windsor, was founded by King George V by royal proclamation. George became the first monarch of the House of Windsor, when he renamed the British Royal Family from the House of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha as a result of anti-German public sentiment in the British Empire during World War I.
After the war, Philip was granted permission by George VI to marry Elizabeth in 1947. Prince Philip of Greece and Denmark, took British citizenship and became a naturalised British subject, adopting the surname Mountbatten from his maternal grandparents.
This "hidden surname" derives from the German town of Battenberg, in Hesse. Prince Louis of Battenberg Anglicised his surname to Mountbatten (its literal English translation) during the First World War at the request of King George V.
Just before the wedding, the King granted him the style of "His Royal Highness" and the title Duke of Edinburgh. His wife made him a prince of the United Kingdom in 1957.
Through a British Order in Council issued in 1960, descendants of Philip Duke of Edinburgh and Queen Elizabeth II can use the surname of Mountbatten-Windsor, and is the personal surname of some of their descendants.
It is, in fact, worth remembering that the word “English” is derived from the Angles, of Anglo-Saxon fame. When the Romans cleared out of Britain in AD 410, a range of German, Danish, and Dutch tribes that we sloppily call the Anglo-Saxons moved in from across the Whale Road. That’s not forgetting the Vikings either, who brought Danish, Norwegian, and Swedish blood to swathes of Britain. So, to be honest, if we scrutinise the Royal Family’s connections with the Fatherland, we should take a long look at our own, too, and acknowledge that this country has had the most profound and close genetic and cultural ties with the people of Germany and Scandinavia for over 1,500 years.

The Franks (Latin: Franci or gens Francorum) were a confederation of Germanic tribes first attested in the third century AD as living north and east of
the Lower Rhine River. From the third to fifth centuries some Franks raided Roman territory while other Franks joined the Roman troops in Gaul.
Only the Salian Franks formed a kingdom on Roman-held soil that was acknowledged by the Romans after 357. In the climate of the collapse of imperial
authority in the West, the Frankish tribes were united under the Merovingians and conquered all of Gaul except Septimania in the 6th century.
The Salian political elite would be one of the most active forces in spreading Christianity over western Europe.
The ethnonym "Frank" is thought to be derived from a Germanic word for "bold, fierce".
The name has sometimes been traced to the Germanic word for "javelin" (cf. Old English franca, Old Norse frakka), however the opposite may be the case,
as in the Latin francisca "throwing axe", which was named after the tribe. A weapon-based tribal name would be comparable to that of the Saxons.
The Merovingian dynasty, descended from the Salians, founded one of the Germanic monarchies which replaced the Western Roman Empire from the
fifth century. The Frankish state consolidated its hold over large parts of western Europe by the end of the eighth century, developing into the
Carolingian Empire which dominated most of Western Europe. This empire would gradually evolve into France and the Holy Roman Empire.
Modern scholars of the Migration Period are in agreement that the Frankish identity emerged at the first half of the 3rd century out of various earlier,
smaller Germanic groups, including the ,Salii, Sicambri, Chamavi, Bructeri, Chatti, Chattuarii, Ampsivarii, Tencteri, Ubii, Batavi and the Tungri.
These tribes inhabited the lower and middle Rhine valley between the Zuyder Zee and the river Lahn and extended eastwards as far as the Weser,
but were the most densely settled around the IJssel and between the Lippe and the Sieg. They are termed by the scholars the Ripuarian Franks,
following an ancient distinction, because they held the right bank (ripa) of the Rhine. The Romans held the left bank.

the Lower Rhine River.

The Franconian languages, which are called Frankisch in Dutch or Fränkisch in German, originated at least partly in the Old Frankish language of the Franks. Nowadays, the German name for France is "Frankreich" (Dutch: "Frankrijk") which means "Realm of the Franks".

Barbarians: The Franks - New World Order Documentary - Geographic History
The Franks (Latin: Franci or gens Francorum) are historically first known as a group of Germanic tribes that roamed the land between the Lower and Middle Rhine in the 3rd century AD, and second as the people of Gaul who merged with the Gallo-Roman populations during succeeding centuries, passing on their name to modern-day France. Some Franks raided Roman territory, while other Frankish tribes joined the Roman troops of Gaul. In later times, Franks became the military rulers of the northern part of Roman Gaul. With the coronation of their ruler Charlemagne as Imperator Romanorum by Pope Leo III in 800 AD, he and his successors were recognized as legitimate successors to the emperors of the Western Roman Empire. In this way, Romance speakers came to be seen as "Franks" in some contexts.

A monarchy is a form of government in which sovereignty is actually or nominally embodied in a single individual (the monarch). Forms of monarchy differ widely based on the level of legal autonomy the monarch holds in governance, the method of selection of the monarch, and any predetermined limits on the length of their tenure. When the monarch has no or few legal restraints in state and political matters, it is called an absolute monarchy and is a form of autocracy. Cases in which the monarch's discretion is formally limited (most common today) are called constitutional monarchies. In hereditary monarchies, the office is passed through inheritance within a family group, whereas elective monarchies use some system of voting. Each of these has variations: in some elected monarchies only those of certain pedigrees are eligible, whereas many hereditary monarchies impose requirements regarding the religion, age, gender, mental capacity, and other factors. Occasionally this might create a situations of rival claimants whose legitimacy is subject to effective election. Finally, there have been cases where the term of a monarch’s reign is either fixed in years or continues until certain goals are achieved: an invasion being repulsed, for instance. Thus there are widely divergent structures and traditions defining monarchy.
Monarchy was the most common form of government until the 19th century, but it is no longer prevalent. Where it exists, it is now usually a constitutional monarchy, in which the monarch retains a unique legal and ceremonial role, but exercises limited or no political power: under the written or unwritten constitution, others have governing authority. Currently, 44 sovereign nations in the world have monarchs acting as heads of state, 16 of which are Commonwealth realms that recognise Queen Elizabeth II as their head of state. All European monarchies are constitutional ones, with the exception of the Vatican City, but sovereigns in the smaller states exercise greater political influence than in the larger. The monarchs of Cambodia, Japan, and Malaysia "reign, but do not rule" although there is considerable variation in the degree of authority they wield. Although they reign under constitutions, the monarchs of Brunei, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and Swaziland appear to continue to exercise more political influence than any other single source of authority in their nations, either by constitutional mandate or by tradition.

A duke (male) (British English: /djuːk/ or American English: /duːk/) or duchess (female) can either be a monarch ruling over a duchy or a member of the nobility, historically of highest rank below the monarch. The title comes from French duc, itself from the Latin dux, 'leader', a term used in republican Rome to refer to a military commander without an official rank (particularly one of Germanic or Celtic origin), and later coming to mean the leading military commander of a province.
During the Middle Ages the title signified first among the Germanic monarchies. Dukes were the rulers of the provinces and the superiors of the counts in the cities and later, in the feudal monarchies, the highest-ranking peers of the king. A duke may or may not be, ipso facto, a member of the nation's peerage: in the United Kingdom and Spain all dukes are/were also peers of the realm, in France some were and some were not, while the term is not applicable to dukedoms of other nations, even where an institution similar to the peerage (e.g., Grandeeship, Imperial Diet, Hungarian House of Magnates) existed.

Britains SECRET HISTORY is SHAMELESS. This covers the radical EXECUTIONS that have on wikipedia now been transformed as a cull on returning troops and their persecution by heavily armed millitias. When the freemasons lodge was created in Galashiels they had a force 5 earthquake in that place. It is one of the hubs for the Walter Scott Foundation like Dryborough where I was sacked by Lord Sanderson of Bowden (a Tweed Commissioner and Head of the Walter Scott Foundation like Alistair Hutton head of the Borders Council) where I was sacked by the freemasons for refusing to kill fish in the embargo period on killing salmon for preser vation reasons. For thirty years the batard Lord Sanderson of Bowden has manipulated UK fish quotas within the crooked EU. The hangings and subsequent beheadings in Glasgow & Stirling were attended by 20,000 and 2,000 respectively. The Glasgow riots (brutally supressed by tank commanders from the South) post WW1 are a sad indictment of the depths to which they are prepared to stoop. All of this is repeated after WW2 in France and Italy where they let the Germans over-run them for cash or switched sides after a warm chat with Mrs Simpson and the Germanic, British Abdicated "KING". The Crown office runs the lawcourts and WALTER SCOTT is adored by the highly lawless judiciary who cripple our country with fraud (see law society scotland and the crashing of the global banks, links to Arnott Manderson, Selling the referendum and just sitting on the illegitimacy of the monarchy and the nuclear weapons scams of Trident 3 and trident 4 in Eccleston square London). In 5 minutes I take this dialogue to a higher authority who casts judgement on innocents between the Hebrides to the Crown estates in Cornwall. I wont tell you his name but it will be in my next video......so stay alert and you can have our country and our prosperity back with no need for WW3. More importantly just by letting the news out you can have your pay ris, pension back and the kids University education for free all around the "FREE WORLD"

Prussia (German: Preußen ) was a German kingdom and historic state originating out of the Duchy of Prussia and the Margraviate of Brandenburg, and centered on the region of Prussia. For centuries, the House of Hohenzollern ruled Prussia, successfully expanding its size by way of an unusually well-organised and effective army. Prussia, with its capital in Berlin after 1451, shaped the history of Germany. In 1871, German states united in creating the German Empire under Prussian leadership. In November 1918, the monarchies were abolished and the nobility lost its political power. Prussia was effectively abolished in 1932, and officially abolished in 1947.
The name Prussia derives from the Old Prussians. In the 13th century, German crusaders, the Teutonic Knights, conquered "Old Prussia". In 1308 the Teutonic Knights conquered the formerly Polish region of Pomerelia with Gdańsk (Danzig). Their monastic state was mostly Germanised through immigration from central and western Germany and in the south, it was Polonised by settlers from Masovia. The Second Peace of Thorn (1466) split Prussia into the western Royal Prussia, a province of Poland, and the eastern part, from 1525 called the Duchy of Prussia, a fief of the Crown of Poland up to 1657. The union of Brandenburg and the Duchy of Prussia in 1618 led to the proclamation of the Kingdom of Prussia in 1701.

This lecture presentation illustrates a pattern of the Christianizing efforts between religious authorities and Germanic rulers after the fall of the Roman Empire. It highlights the literary heritage published by monks such as Nennius, the Venerable Bebe or the cleric who penned Beowulf. Additionally, it connects Celtic heroism to the Saxon invasions to legends that would become popular from the time of Homeric Greek tales to the Old English poem Beowulf. In Anglo-Saxon English this tradition continued with the legend of King Arthur (9C AD) and Merlin (11C). In the nineteenth century British writers left us with contemporary stories of talking animals and fantasic places. What comes to mind as this tradition widens reminds me of Alice in Wonderland, The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe along with the stories from Beatrix Potter featuring Benjamin Bunny and his friends. By the twentieth century, authors have contributed to this tradition. Ancient Albion was known as a place of wizards, monsters, trolls, and dragons. Contemporary writers have kept us interested--thankfully--for decades. Two stand out: Dr. Tolkien's epic tales of Middle Earth and the Harry Potter stories by J.K. Rowling. Our fascination with the battle between good and evil is timeless.
While this college presentation spends time on literary traditions and tales, it also teaches the pattern of English unification after the arrival of the Vikings and concludes with a biographical snippet of Alfred the Great.
