A dinâmica política e a configuração das constituições contemporâneas não podem ser compreendidas sem que se tenha em conta a teorização do jurista e politólogo alemão Carl Schmitt (1888-1985). O século XX, a “era dos extremos” no dizer de Eric Hobsbawn, exacerbou a distinção entre amigo e inimigo, núcleo
fundamental do conceito do político daquele pensador. Além de ter sido um autor fundamental na configuração constitucional da Alemanha pré-2ª Grande Guerra, através do seu conceito de estado de exceção, suas idéias políticas e jurídicas se
tornaram centrais na construção dos Estados ditatoriais do mundo ocidental, em particular da Alemanha nazista. No entanto, esta identificação de Schmitt como o grande jurista do III Reich encobre a pertinência de sua vigorosa crítica ao falseamento da democracia operado pelas instituições representativas liberais.
Nesse sentido, quer seja pela sua importância histórica, quer pela atualidade de seu pensamento, Carl Schmitt é um autor essencial para a teoria política, para a teoria constitucional e para o estudo das relações entre Estados-Nação. Se por um lado as idéias de um autor podem ser estudadas em si mesmas, por outro, a recuperação do contexto no qual são produzidas lhes confere
maior densidade e significado históricos. Pela sua contextualização, se percebe o quanto determinados conceitos, embora universalizáveis, foram produzidos para lidar com problemas particulares daquele específico momento histórico. O momento histórico no qual Schmitt produz seus mais relevantes trabalhos é a Alemanha da República de Weimar, período no qual tem lugar o clássico debate protagonizado por ele e pelo jurista austríaco Hans Kelsen (1881-1973). Schmitt e Kelsen desenvolvem argumentações opostas quanto à natureza da política, quanto ao conceito de democracia e quanto às instituições jurídicas viáveis para os tempos modernos. A teoria de Carl Schmitt condensa particularmente o debate entre liberdade e igualdade, autoridade e democracia, presente na tradição do pensamento europeu moderno, aí incluídos por exemplo Hobbes, Kant e Rousseau.

The son of a cloth manufacturer, Schmitt was born in 1870 in Blâmont, Meurthe-et-Moselle, in the province of Lorraine. Something of a late starter, he had his first musical education in Nancy. In 1889 he entered the Paris Conservatoire, where he studied with Dubois, Lavignac, Massenet and Fauré, whom he greatly admired and whose influence may be heard in his very early works. Schmitt won the Prix de Rome in 1900 with his cantata Sémiramis, and his reputation was soon after confirmed by the appearance of his major choral work Psaume XLVII (Psalm 47). He was seldom in residence, and spent much of his time travelling throughout Europe sampling the contemporary music on offer. Throughout a long and highly productive life, Schmitt continued to compose a host of stage, orchestral, vocal, chamber and piano works. During his career he was President of the Société nationale de musique, and a member of the Société musicale indépendante. In 1914 he was enlisted into military service, and sent to serve in the front line at his own request. After the war, from 1921 to 1924 he was Director of the Lyons Conservatoire, and in 1929 became music critic for Le Temps, a position which he occupied in the manner of a high arbiter of national taste. In 1936, as mentioned above, Schmitt was elected to the Institut de France and the Académie des Beaux-Arts.
With Ombres (‘Shadows’), Op.64, written between 1913 and 1917, Florent Schmitt reached full maturity and signed an indisputable masterpiece, which deserves a place at the summit of French piano literature alongside Debussy’s Images and Ravel’s Gaspard de la nuit. In fact, Ombres shares certain aspects with those scores: comparable length, the same triptych form whose completely independent pieces are inspired by poems and, finally, the same orchestral treatment of the piano writing. Here one might speak of veritable symphonic poems for piano. Inspired by an excerpt from Lautréamont’s Chants de Maldoror, quoted as an epigraph — ‘In the distance I hear prolonged cries of the most poignant suffering’ — the first piece is the most ambitious of his entire piano oeuvre in its length (the only one to exceed ten minutes), but especially in its fearsome technical difficulties. Based on two amply developed main themes — the one rebellious, the other, which follows immediately, quite inward, but both full of dramatic, painful feeling; this first part, written in the dark year of 1917, obviously echoes the conflict of the Great War. Faithful to his wish to ‘see all the masterpieces written initially for piano before being orchestrated’, a version for piano and orchestra would be realised and first performed by Jacques Février and the Orchestre Colonne in 1930. Shorter and having no literary support, Mauresque serves as an entertaining interlude. After a brief, threatening introduction, the main theme is stated languorously and indolently, and a second motif with its Debussyst progressions of fifths maintains the piece in a serene atmosphere devoid of dramatic feelings. The last piece, once again bringing Debussy to mind, is inspired by a Walt Whitman poem: ‘This shadow, my image that comes and goes, seeking its life...‘ Florent Schmitt, after Debussy in Images or Ravel in Miroirs, broaches the typically Impressionistic theme of the reflected image
and here uses absolutely remarkable harmonies and crystalline colours.
Unlike Ravel, who dedicated each movement of his Gaspard de la nuit to pianist friends (Harold Bauer, Jean Marnold and Rudolph Ganz), Schmitt dedicated each movement of Ombes to literary or social acquaintances: lecturer/writer Paul Loyonnet; Linette Chalupt, daughter of the poet René Chalupt; and Yvonne Müller, soon to become the wife of Italian composer Alfredo Casella.

As a side note, I have to say this is one of the most impressively intricate and beautiful scores for piano I've ever laid eyes upon. Note: it appears to have been started in 1912, rather than 1913

Carl Schmitt
Carl Schmitt (German: [ʃmɪt]; 11 July 1888 – 7 April 1985) was a German jurist and political theorist. Schmitt wrote extensively about the effective wielding of political power. His work has been a major influence on subsequent political theory, legal theory, continental philosophy and political theology.
Schmitt's work has attracted the attention of numerous philosophers and political theorists, including Walter Benjamin, Leo Strauss, Jürgen Habermas, Friedrich Hayek,Jacques Derrida, Hannah Arendt, Susan Buck-Morss, Giorgio Agamben, Jaime Guzmán, Antonio Negri and Slavoj Žižek among many others. Much of his work remains both influential and controversial presently due to his association with Nazism, for which he is known as the "crown jurist of the Third Reich".
Biography
Early years
Schmitt, whose father was a minor businessman, was the son of Roman Catholic parents from the German Eifel region who settled in Plettenberg, Westphalia. He studied law in Berlin, Munich and Strasbourg and took his graduation and state examinations in then-German Strasbourg during 1915. He volunteered for the army during 1916. The same year, he earned his habilitation in Strasbourg. He taught at various business schools and universities in Munich, Greifswald, Bonn, Berlin and Cologne.

Florent Schmitt
Florent Schmitt (28 September 1870 – 17 August 1958) was a French composer.
Biography
Early life
A Lorrainer, born in Meurthe-et-Moselle, Schmitt originally took music lessons in Nancy with the local composer Gustave Sandré. Subsequently (at the age of 19) he entered the Paris Conservatoire. There he studied with Gabriel Fauré, Jules Massenet, Théodore Dubois, and Albert Lavignac. In 1900 he won the Prix de Rome. During the 1890s he became friendly with Frederick Delius, who was living in Paris at the time; this friendship led to Schmitt preparing vocal scores for four of Delius's operas: Irmelin, The Magic Fountain, Koanga and A Village Romeo & Juliet.
From 1929 to 1939 Schmitt worked as a music critic for Le Temps, in which role he created considerable controversy, not least for his indiscreet habit of shouting out verdicts from his seat in the hall. The music publisher Heugel went so far as to call him "an irresponsible lunatic".
Later life
Having been one of the most often performed of French composers during the first four decades of the 20th century, Schmitt afterwards fell into comparative neglect, although he continued writing music till the end (and in 1952 he became a member of the Légion d'honneur). He became the subject of attacks — both in his last years and posthumously — over his pro-German sympathies during the 1930s, and over his willingness to work for the Vichy regime later on (as indeed other eminent French musicians did, notably Alfred Cortot and Joseph Canteloube).

fundamental do conceito do político daquele pensador. Além de ter sido um autor fundamental na configuração constitucional da Alemanha pré-2ª Grande Guerra, através do seu conceito de estado de exceção, suas idéias políticas e jurídicas se
tornaram centrais na construção dos Estados ditatoriais do mundo ocidental, em particular da Alemanha nazista. No entanto, esta identificação de Schmitt como o grande jurista do III Reich encobre a pertinência de sua vigorosa crítica ao falseamento da democracia operado pelas instituições representativas liberais.
Nesse sentido, quer seja pela sua importância histórica, quer pela atualidade de seu pensamento, Carl Schmitt é um autor essencial para a teoria política, para a teoria constitucional e para o estudo das relações entre Estados-Nação. Se por um lado as idéias de um autor podem ser estudadas em si mesmas, por outro, a recuperação do contexto no qual são produzidas lhes confere
maior densidade e significado históricos. Pela sua contextualização, se percebe o quanto determinados conceitos, embora universalizáveis, foram produzidos para lidar com problemas particulares daquele específico momento histórico. O momento histórico no qual Schmitt produz seus mais relevantes trabalhos é a Alemanha da República de Weimar, período no qual tem lugar o clássico debate protagonizado por ele e pelo jurista austríaco Hans Kelsen (1881-1973). Schmitt e Kelsen desenvolvem argumentações opostas quanto à natureza da política, quanto ao conceito de democracia e quanto às instituições jurídicas viáveis para os tempos modernos. A teoria de Carl Schmitt condensa particularmente o debate entre liberdade e igualdade, autoridade e democracia, presente na tradição do pensamento europeu moderno, aí incluídos por exemplo Hobbes, Kant e Rousseau.

The son of a cloth manufacturer, Schmitt was born in 1870 in Blâmont, Meurthe-et-Moselle, in the province of Lorraine. Something of a late starter, he had his first musical education in Nancy. In 1889 he entered the Paris Conservatoire, where he studied with Dubois, Lavignac, Massenet and Fauré, whom he greatly admired and whose influence may be heard in his very early works. Schmitt won the Prix de Rome in 1900 with his cantata Sémiramis, and his reputation was soon after confirmed by the appearance of his major choral work Psaume XLVII (Psalm 47). He was seldom in residence, and spent much of his time travelling throughout Europe sampling the contemporary music on offer. Throughout a long and highly productive life, Schmitt continued to compose a host of stage, orchestral, vocal, chamber and piano works. During his career he was President of the Société nationale de musique, and a member of the Société musicale indépendante. In 1914 he was enlisted into military service, and sent to serve in the front line at his own request. After the war, from 1921 to 1924 he was Director of the Lyons Conservatoire, and in 1929 became music critic for Le Temps, a position which he occupied in the manner of a high arbiter of national taste. In 1936, as mentioned above, Schmitt was elected to the Institut de France and the Académie des Beaux-Arts.
With Ombres (‘Shadows’), Op.64, written between 1913 and 1917, Florent Schmitt reached full maturity and signed an indisputable masterpiece, which deserves a place at the summit of French piano literature alongside Debussy’s Images and Ravel’s Gaspard de la nuit. In fact, Ombres shares certain aspects with those scores: comparable length, the same triptych form whose completely independent pieces are inspired by poems and, finally, the same orchestral treatment of the piano writing. Here one might speak of veritable symphonic poems for piano. Inspired by an excerpt from Lautréamont’s Chants de Maldoror, quoted as an epigraph — ‘In the distance I hear prolonged cries of the most poignant suffering’ — the first piece is the most ambitious of his entire piano oeuvre in its length (the only one to exceed ten minutes), but especially in its fearsome technical difficulties. Based on two amply developed main themes — the one rebellious, the other, which follows immediately, quite inward, but both full of dramatic, painful feeling; this first part, written in the dark year of 1917, obviously echoes the conflict of the Great War. Faithful to his wish to ‘see all the masterpieces written initially for piano before being orchestrated’, a version for piano and orchestra would be realised and first performed by Jacques Février and the Orchestre Colonne in 1930. Shorter and having no literary support, Mauresque serves as an entertaining interlude. After a brief, threatening introduction, the main theme is stated languorously and indolently, and a second motif with its Debussyst progressions of fifths maintains the piece in a serene atmosphere devoid of dramatic feelings. The last piece, once again bringing Debussy to mind, is inspired by a Walt Whitman poem: ‘This shadow, my image that comes and goes, seeking its life...‘ Florent Schmitt, after Debussy in Images or Ravel in Miroirs, broaches the typically Impressionistic theme of the reflected image
and here uses absolutely remarkable harmonies and crystalline colours.
Unlike Ravel, who dedicated each movement of his Gaspard de la nuit to pianist friends (Harold Bauer, Jean Marnold and Rudolph Ganz), Schmitt dedicated each movement of Ombes to literary or social acquaintances: lecturer/writer Paul Loyonnet; Linette Chalupt, daughter of the poet René Chalupt; and Yvonne Müller, soon to become the wife of Italian composer Alfredo Casella.
