Hamming, "n-Dimensional Space" (April 14, 1995)
Intro: When I became a professor, after 30 years of active research at Bell Telephone Laboratories, mainly in the math research department, I recalled that professors are supposed to think and digest past experiences. So I put my feet up on the desk and began to consider my past. In the early years I had been mainly in computing so naturally I was involved in many large projects that required computing. Thinking about how things worked out on several of the large engineering systems I was partially involved in, I began, now that I had some distance from them, to see that they had some common elements. Slowly I began to realize that the design problems all took place in a space of n-dimensions, where n is the number of independent parameters. Yes, we build three dimensional objects, but the...

Hamming Space Locality Preserving Neural Hashing for Similarity Search
BayLearn 2020 Poster #61
Presenter: Daphna Idelson
Abstract:
We propose a novel method for learning to map a large-scale dataset in the feature representation space to binary hash codes in the hamming space, for fast and efficient approximate nearest-neighbor similarity search. Our method is composed of a simple neural network and a novel training scheme, that aims to preserve the locality relations between the original data points. We achieve distance preservation of the original cosine space upon the new hamming space, by introducing a loss function that translates the relational similarities in both spaces to probability distributions - and optimizes the KL divergence between them. Hamming, "Digital Filters, Part II" (April 28, 1995)
Intro: When digital filters first arose they were involved merely as a variant of the classical analog filters; people did not see them as essentially new and different. This is exactly the same mistake that was made endlessly by people in the early days of computers. I was told repeatedly, until I was sick of hearing it, that computers were nothing more than large, fast desk calculators. "Anything you can do by a machine you can do by hand." So they said. This simply ignores the speed, accuracy, reliability, and lower costs of the machines versus humans. Typically a single order of magnitude change (a factor to 10) produces fundamentally new effects, and computers are many, many times faster than hand computations. Those who claimed that there was no essential difference never made any si...

Introduction To HAMMING CODES | Fix Single-bit Errors Part 1
In this video, I introduce you to hamming codes. I was a little late to upload this, but I will try uploading more consistently in the future. I changed my resources since the other ones were unrelated to this video or were inaccurate (luckily I didn't state any information from it last time).
I also wanted to clarify a few things up. When the total amount of 1's is even in the entire 8-bit data, you know that either it is correct or there is no way to fix it (since hamming codes can only fix 1-bit errors).
I used images from the internet including from Pixabay. The thumbnail was made on Pixlr.

Bi-Lipschitz Bijection between the Boolean Cube and the Hamming Ball - Gil Cohen
Gil Cohen
Weizmann Institute
December 16, 2013
We construct a bi-Lipschitz bijection from the Boolean cube to the Hamming ball of equal volume. More precisely, we show that for all even nn, there exists an explicit bijection ff from the nn-dimensional Boolean cube to the Hamming ball of equal volume embedded in (n+1)(n+1)-dimensional Boolean cube, such that for all xx and yy it holds that distance(x,y)/5≤distance(f(x),f(y))≤4distance(x,y)distance(x,y)/5≤distance(f(x),f(y))≤4distance(x,y) where distance(⋅,⋅)distance(⋅,⋅) denotes the Hamming distance. In particular, this implies that the Hamming ball is bi-Lipschitz transitive. This result gives a strong negative answer to an open problem of Lovett and Viola [CC 2012], who raised the question in the context of sampling distributions in low-l...

The Art of Doing Science and Engineering: Learning to Learn" was the capstone course by Dr. Richard W. Hamming (1915-1998) for graduate students at the Naval Postgraduate School (NPS) in Monterey California.
This course is intended to instill a "style of thinking" that will enhance one's ability to function as a problem solver of complex technical issues. With respect, students sometimes called the course "Hamming on Hamming" because he relates many research collaborations, discoveries, inventions and achievements of his own. This collection of stories and carefully distilled insights relates how those discoveries came about. Most importantly, these presentations provide objective analysis about the thought processes and reasoning that took place as Dr. Hamming, his associates and other major thinkers, in computer science and electronics, progressed through the grand challenges of science and engineering in the twentieth century.

We also introduce a simple data sampling method by representing the database with randomly generated proxies, used as reference points to query points from the training set. Experimenting with three publicly available standard ANN benchmarks we demonstrate significant improvement over other binary hashing methods, achieving an improvement of between 7% to 17%. As opposed to other methods, we show high performance in both low (64 bits) and high (768 bits) dimensional bit representation, offering increased accuracy when resources are available and flexibility in choice of ANN strategy.

n-Dimensional Space. When I became a professor, after 30 years of active research at Bell Telephone Laboratories, mainly in the math research department, I recalled that professors are supposed to think and digest past experiences. Yes, we build three dimensional objects, but their design is in a high dimensional space, one dimension for each design parameter.

Those who claimed that there was no essential difference never made any significant contributions to the development of computers. Those who did make significant contributions viewed computers as something new to be studied on their own merits and not as merely more of the same old desk calculators, perhaps souped up a bit.

This result gives a strong negative answer to an open problem of Lovett and Viola [CC 2012], who raised the question in the context of sampling distributions in low-level complexity classes. The conceptual implication is that the problem of proving lower bounds in the context of sampling distributions requires ideas beyond the sensitivity-based structural results of Boppana [IPL 97]. No prior knowledge is assumed. Joint work with Itai Benjamini and Igor Shinkar.

CODE IS LAW? Smart Contracts Explained (Ethereum, DeFi)
Have you ever heard the expression "code is law" where technology is used to enforce rules? In that case, do we even need lawyers? Or maybe we can live in a fully automated world where code dictates what we can and cannot do. With the current development of smart contracts, this futuristic scenario may be closer than we think.
A smart contract is a piece of code that can be executed automatically and in a deterministic way. The smart contract code is usually stored and executed on the blockchain to make it trustless and secure. The Code of Hammurabi & the Rule of Law: Why Written Law Matters [No. 86]
3,500 years ago, King Hammurabi of Babylon compiled a series of commands regarding the day-to-day life of his people. These commands, which dealt with topics from divorce to contracts to murder, were preserved on a diorite stela, binding future Babylonian kings to Hammurabi’s new code of law.
How can a written legal code affect the rule of law? Dr. Paul Rahe of Hillsdale College discusses the 282 laws which can be found on this artifact and how they have influenced law codes from the Book of Deuteronomy to American legal codes.

As always, the Federalist Society takes no particular legal or public policy positions. All opinions expressed are those of the speaker.

I show why the Law of Demeter is important to make the code clean (or rather resilient) and why it makes the code not so clean (long call chains)

Smart contracts also have capabilities of receiving, storing and sending funds and even calling other smart contracts. They follow if-then semantics which makes them fairly easy to program.
Smart contracts aim at removing the human factor from decision making. The human factor is often proven to be the most error-prone and unreliable element of the standard, traditional contracts.
Ethereum is a good example of a blockchain that supports smart contracts and make it possible for a programmer to implement their own smart contracts. A smart contract can be written in a programming language called Solidity which was created specifically for that purpose. In Ethereum, all the deployed smart contracts are immutable. This means that once deployed they cannot be modified which creates certain risks that we’re going to discuss later. Smart contracts on Ethereum are also decentralized which means there is no single machine controlling the contract. In fact, all the nodes of the Ethereum network store the same contract with exactly the same state.
