Arthur William Matthew “Art” Carney (November 4, 1918 – November 9, 2003) was an American actor in film, stage, television and radio. He is best known for playing sewer worker Ed Norton, opposite Jackie Gleason's Ralph Kramden in the sitcom The Honeymooners, and for winning the Academy Award for Best Actor for his role in Harry and Tonto.
Carney, youngest of six sons (Jack, Ned, Robert, Fred, Phil, and Art) was born in Mount Vernon, New York, the son of Helen (née Farrell) and Edward Michael Carney, who was a newspaper man and publicist. His family was Irish American and Roman Catholic. He attended A. B. Davis High School. Carney was drafted into the United States Army as an infantryman and machine gun crewman during World War II. During the Battle of Normandy serving in the 28th Infantry Division, he was wounded in the leg by shrapnel and walked with a limp for the rest of his life. As a result of the injury, his right leg was 3/4-inch shorter than his left.

Plot: The story begins at the height of Gleason's career. He has it all: women, wealth, and extraordinary power. But he is haunted by memories of his childhood. Gleason spends his formative years entering amateur contests, performing in sleazy night spots. Along the way, he steals gags from the best comics in town and finds love with Genevieve, a dancer whom he marries. But Gleason isn't the ideal husband or even a responsible father as he abandons his family to answer the call of Hollywood. Brash, arrogant, and egotistical, he alienates his directors and the man who discovers him. When he ends up back in New York, Gleason gets one of those rare second chances in the new medium of television, creating some of its most unforgettable characters. But even as Gleason becomes the talk of the tube, his life - ruled by demons of rage, booze, and insecurity - unravels.

Here's a real treat: a spoof of "What's My Line?" from a very rare Art Carney TV special originally aired on Dec 4, 1959 ("Very Important People"). Carney did a whole series of these specials from 1959 to 1961, but somehow they've been all but forgotten. No surprise how funny this sketch is: it was written by Sheldon Keller and legendary comedy writer Larry Gelbart (part of Sid Caesar's original writing team, later the creator of the TV series M*A*S*H and the "Oh God!" movie series starring George Burns). Carney's take on John Charles Daly is absolutely spot on, as is Betty Garrett's Arlene Francis. And don't miss what she's wearing around her neck-- very funny! As great as SCTV's "What's My Shoe Size?" takeoff of WML was, this sketch is a whole lot closer in spirit to the real WML and i...

THE DEAN MARTIN CELEBRITY ROAST: "Jackie Gleason". When Dean Martin put together the celebrety panel for his roast of Jackie Gleason in 1975 he did it right.Cast memberbers from Gleason's seminal TV Series "The Honeymooners' were on hand, including Ralph Kramden's 'first' TV wife Audrey Meadows, and Art Carney, appearing in character as his best friend Ed Norton. Also on hand were Sheila MacRae, the second Mrs. Kranden in the late Sixties 'Jackie Gleason Show', and Jane Kean, the second Mrs. Norton also from that series. The only one missing that I would like to have seen was Joyce Randolph, the original Trixie Norton from 'The Honeymooners'. Starring - Man of the Hour - Jackie Gleason; With guest stars, Milton Berle, Foster Brooks, Cid Ceasar, Art Carney, Phyllis Diller, Frank Gorshin...
