Goal

A goal is a desired result that a person or a system envisions, plans and commits to achieve: a personal or organizational desired end-point in some sort of assumed development. Many people endeavor to reach goals within a finite time by setting deadlines.

It is roughly similar to purpose or aim, the anticipated result which guides reaction, or an end, which is an object, either a physical object or an abstract object, that has intrinsic value.

Goal setting

Goal setting may involve establishing specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bounded (SMART) objectives, but not all researchers agree that these SMART criteria are necessary.

Research on goal setting by Edwin A. Locke and his colleagues suggests that goal setting can serve as an effective tool for making progress when it ensures that group members have a clear awareness of what each person must do to achieve a shared objective. On a personal level, the process of setting goals allows individuals to specify and then work toward their own objectives (such as financial or career-based goals). Goal-setting comprises a major component of personal development and management.

Data

Data (/ˈdeɪtə/ DAY-tə, /ˈdætə/ DA-tə, or /ˈdɑːtə/ DAH-tə) is a set of values of qualitative or quantitative variables; restated, pieces of data are individual pieces of information. Data is measured, collected and reported, and analyzed, whereupon it can be visualized using graphs or images. Data as a general concept refers to the fact that some existing information or knowledge is represented or coded in some form suitable for better usage or processing.

Raw data, i.e. unprocessed data, is a collection of numbers, characters; data processing commonly occurs by stages, and the "processed data" from one stage may be considered the "raw data" of the next. Field data is raw data that is collected in an uncontrolled in situ environment. Experimental data is data that is generated within the context of a scientific investigation by observation and recording.

The Latin word "data" is the plural of "datum", and still may be used as a plural noun in this sense. Nowadays, though, "data" is most commonly used in the singular, as a mass noun (like "information", "sand" or "rain").

Gold rush

A gold rush is an interval of feverish migration of workers to an area that has had a dramatic discovery of gold deposits. Major gold rushes took place in the 19th century in Australia, New Zealand, Brazil, Canada, South Africa, and the United States, while smaller gold rushes took place elsewhere.

There were six major gold rushes. The permanent wealth that resulted was distributed widely because of reduced migration costs and low barriers to entry. While gold mining itself was unprofitable for most diggers and mine owners, some people made large fortunes, and the merchants and transportation facilities made large profits. The resulting increase in the world's gold supply stimulated global trade and investment. Historians have written extensively about the migration, trade, colonization, and environmental history associated with gold rushes.

Gold rushes were typically marked by a general buoyant feeling of a "free for all" in income mobility, in which any single individual might become abundantly wealthy almost instantly, as expressed in the California Dream.

Trousers

Trousers (pants in North America) are an item of clothing worn from the waist to the ankles, covering both legs separately (rather than with cloth extending across both legs as in robes, skirts, and dresses).

In the UK the word "pants" generally means underwear and not trousers.Shorts are similar to trousers, but with legs that come down only to around the area of the knee, higher or lower depending on the style of the garment. To distinguish them from shorts, trousers may be called "long trousers" in certain contexts such as school uniform, where tailored shorts may be called "short trousers", especially in the UK.

In most of the Western world, trousers have been worn since ancient times and throughout the Medieval period, becoming the most common form of lower-body clothing for adult males in the modern world, although shorts are also widely worn, and kilts and other garments may be worn in various regions and cultures. Breeches were worn instead of trousers in early modern Europe by some men in higher classes of society. Since the mid-20th century, trousers have increasingly been worn by women as well. Jeans, made of denim, are a form of trousers for casual wear, now widely worn all over the world by both sexes. Shorts are often preferred in hot weather or for some sports and also often by children and teenagers. Trousers are worn on the hips or waist and may be held up by their own fastenings, a belt or suspenders (braces). Leggings are form-fitting trousers, of a clingy material, often knitted cotton and spandex (elastane).

Hundreds know Ryan Lookwood from his Twitch stream; dozens others have met him at our annual meetup. There are a lot of, um... idiosyncratic dudes that take to speedrunning, and Ryan Lockwood is no exception. He's an intense dude, in short. Ryan is the second person to achieve the time of 1:12 on this level. Normally record ties aren't big news, but Ryan hit this time before getting 1:13. This is absurdly unlikely. 1:12 is one of the most frame-for-frame maxed times in GoldenEye, first accomplished by Marc Rützou in 2012, a player whose made a name for grinding hard to break/set records that are daunting to match. With 20+ people sharing the old record of 1:13 in early 2012, the prospect of 1:12 was a popular debate in the forums. A $100 bounty was posted for anyone who could get this time--legitimately--and after weeks of attempts, Marc won the "race". Only a few have shown serious intentions (or even interest) in matching the feat since. Technically, Ryan isn't among them, as 1:13 was his goal. But you'll see in the video that he had a good sense of what was on the line toward the end of his run. The nuances of "modern" Goldeneye speedrunning may be hard to detect, but the novelty of this run's unlikeliness should not be. A 1:14 run Streets is probably a 1 in 20 event, with respect to Lockwood's ability. A 1:13 absolutely requires something random (see: RNG) -- the presence of a grenade launcher guard. Let's call 1:13 a 1 in 500 event. A 1:12 run leans on "RNG factors" even more, also requiring at least 3 "boosts" from gunfire (getting shot in the pack, pushing you ahead slightly). Let's suppose 1 in 10,000 odds for 1:12, in which case you can probably expect dozens of 1:13 runs before achieving 1:12. Think of this like a statistical outlier in a distribution plot -- perhaps a few hundred data points between 74.0 and 75.0 seconds, thousands between 74.0 an 76.0, and one 72.9. Objective diagnosis of clinical depression is a game-changer, as the stigma associated with many mental illnesses often prevents them from being treated. Redei says that “Once you have numbers in your hand, you can identify that [depression] is an illness -- not a matter of will.” #6 - Commercial Brain Scanners A woman reads while hooked up to an EEG at the University of Bonn in Germany in the year 2000. 16 years later, scientists like Dr. Philip Steven Low use single-channel EEG’s to scan the brain, as in an EEG gathering brain activity data using a single electrode, a technology developed by Low in 2007 when he invented the Sleep Parametric EEG Automated Recognition System algorithm, or SPEARS. Something like a Fitbit or smart watch for the brain is the goal of Tan Le, Emotiv CEO. Le’s company manufactures consumer EEG’s. Diagnosing neurological disorders early on is one of the ways monitoring could help society and now that it is not as time-consuming and labor-intensive to gather that data, progress is inevitable as long as people continue to utilize wearable health technology. Low has also used single-channel EEG’s for testing drugs that are in the later stages of development. #5 - Improved Snowshoes This innovative snowshoe by Seattle designer Eric Brunt allows the user to walk more naturally while still gaining the advantages of a wide surface area to stay on top of the snow. His kinematic folding mechanism operates with parallelogram tiles that are pulled together with a compression band attached to the weight-triggered foot plate. Brunt’s design won 2nd place at the International Design Excellence Awards in 2014. #4 - Electrified Threads Clothes that utilize nanotechnologies to kill bacteria and protect against hazardous materials are here, but so are clothes that convert heat into electricity with the help of carbon nanotubes. Power Felt was created by David Carroll, head of Wake Forest University’s Center for Nanotechnology and Molecular Materials in North Carolina, and his team. The thermoelectric fabric can be manufactured thicker to generate more power. The key is in the Seebeck effect, which converts temperature difference into voltage when electrons travel from the hot to the cold side. Potential applications include the fabric in the car providing more insulation and sound dampening in addition to battery power, cell phone cases that improve charging rates, sweatshirts that power our devices and roofing that provides some power to a home. #3 - Smoothing Out Traffic Traffic jams are the scourge of many a large metropolis, but many traffic researchers believe we’re already easing the rush hour freeway flow, as adaptive cruise control makes its way into more and more new automobiles. Adaptive cruise control, also known as autonomous cruise control or traffic-aware cruise control, automatically keeps the vehicle a certain distance away from the cars in front of it. Studies have suggested that with a quarter of the vehicles on the road using adaptive cruise control, delays due to traffic congestion are reduced by 20% and travel time is reduced by 37.5%. #2 - More Comfortable Flights Airplanes built more from carbon fiber than aluminum are more common these days, allowing for better fuel efficiency and higher cabin pressure and humidity levels since carbon fiber doesn’t rust and is a stronger structural material than aluminum. The use of carbon fiber allows more flexibility in wing design as well, with sweeping wing tips helping with fuel efficiency and reducing noise. #1 - Unbooze Nonhangovers Professor David Nutt, the former British drug tsar fired for stating that horseback riding is more dangerous than the drug “ecstasy”, has created “alcosynth,” a compound that is allegedly nonaddictive, removing the dreaded hangover from the day after a solid night of partying, alongside liver toxicity, loss of control and aggression. He has also made a drug that, when taken while drinking, prevents the imbiber from becoming too drunk. The psychiatrist proposes that alcosynth would just be a powder added to any beverage or sprinkled on food. He had originally used a benzodiazepine derivative in alcosynth drinks, but his new ones do not.

The 10 expectations vs reality new year’s resolutions or goals I show you in this fun comedy video are: Waking up early. Being more productive is a resolution that many of us have each year. Our expectations are all about waking up early and make the most of our days. But reality is often quite different! We end up sleeping all morning and then rush to school like crazy, hehe. Eating healthy. Probably the number one new year’s resolution we all take! During the Christmas break we eat so much sweet and other unhealthy food. By the end of the holidays we all feel pretty fed up with all that and we decide to cut away sweets, junk food and desserts completely. In the first days of the new year keeping up with the healthy eating resolution is easy, because we are still recovering from the Christmas sugar coma. A few days in the new year, the reality strikes and we are back to usual again. Saving money. All the Christmas shopping causes some serious damage to our bank accounts so we decide to start the year saving. But why, oh why do the sales start just the a few days after the new year?! RIP savings. Working out. How many of you had the working out regularly new year’s resolution for the past five new years? I thought so, it's my goal too! I don’t know what excuse did you find, but boy it is freaking cold here in Norway in January. My immune system just can’t tackle it. Gym?! Sorry, there’s no gym in the 20 meter distance from my apartment. Good luck with finding your excuses! ;) Studying. We all have the expectations of studying regularly in order to avoid the madness days before the exams. In reality it is impossible to get the motivation to study hard more than one day before the exam. It just doesn’t exists, I think it’s probably scientifically proven already. Improving style. I struggle with that so much. I just really love comfortable clothes! One of my common new year’s resolutions every year is to start dressing a bit more elegant and not like a 10 year old! But reality strikes as soon as I step out of the apartment door. Wind, rain, storm! So I am totally forced to get back into boots, scarves, warm jackets. Thank you, Norway! Being more organized. I must say that I love having my room clean. I make sure I tidy it every Saturday. However, out of the seven days in a week, my room is only organized on Saturday. How this is possible, don’t ask me. Forget ex-boyfriend and move on. You have been on and off with someone for months and you don’t know where you stand. Clearly he isn’t serious so it’s time to say: enough! You are all decided to move on and let someone new in your life until you get his SMS. And here we go again.. Be more spontaneous. Have you ever decided to start taking life with a big spoon and start living to the fullest? Yeah, me too. But then bed and Netflix happens. Yeah, been there - goals killer. Take time for your loved ones. In the world of the social media we have to keep up with absolutely everything that’s going on in the world to the point where sometimes it feels like we are married to our smart phones and tablets! So for our new year’s resolution we decide to spend more quality time with our friends and family. Well the reality shows keeping up with this resolution is pretty hard. A Japanese teenager is suing the government in Osaka after her public school repeatedly forced her to dye her naturally brown hair black or else be banned from attending school, according to Reuters.
