Data (/ˈdeɪtə/ DAY-tə, /ˈdætə/ DA-tə, or /ˈdɑːtə/ DAH-tə) is a set of values of qualitative or quantitative variables; restated, pieces of data are individual pieces of information. Data is measured, collected and reported, and analyzed, whereupon it can be visualized using graphs or images. Data as a general concept refers to the fact that some existing information or knowledge is represented or coded in some form suitable for better usage or processing.
Raw data, i.e. unprocessed data, is a collection of numbers, characters; data processing commonly occurs by stages, and the "processed data" from one stage may be considered the "raw data" of the next. Field data is raw data that is collected in an uncontrolled in situ environment. Experimental data is data that is generated within the context of a scientific investigation by observation and recording.
The Latin word "data" is the plural of "datum", and still may be used as a plural noun in this sense. Nowadays, though, "data" is most commonly used in the singular, as a mass noun (like "information", "sand" or "rain").
Human migration is the movement by people from one place to another with the intentions of settling temporarily or permanently in the new location. The movement is often over long distances and from one country to another, but internal migration is also possible; indeed, this is the dominant form globally. Migration may be individuals, family units or in large groups.
Nomadic movements are normally not regarded as migrations as there is no intention to settle in the new place and because the movement is generally seasonal. Only a few nomadic peoples have retained this form of lifestyle in modern times. Also, the temporary movement of people for the purpose of travel, tourism, pilgrimages, or the commute is not regarded as migration, in the absence of an intention to live and settle in the visited places.
Many estimates of statistics in worldwide migration patterns exist. The World Bank has published its Migration and Remittances Factbook annually since 2008. The International Organisation for Migration (IOM) has published a yearly World Migration Report since 1999. The United Nations Statistics Division also keeps a database on worldwide migration. Recent advances in research of migration via the Internet promise better understanding of migration patterns and migration motives.
The Rift is a virtual reality head-mounted display developed by Oculus VR. It was initially proposed in a Kickstarter campaign, during which Oculus VR (at the time an independent company) raised US$2.5 million for the development of the product.
The Rift is scheduled for release on March 28, 2016, making it one of the first consumer-targeted virtual reality headsets. It has a resolution of 1080×1200 per eye, a 90 Hz refresh rate, and a wide field of view. It has integrated headphones which provide a 3D audio effect. The Rift has rotational and positional tracking. The positional tracking is performed by a USB stationary IR sensor, which normally sits on the user's desk, allowing for using the Rift while sitting, standing, or walking around the same room.
The Rift has gone through various prototype versions in the years since the Kickstarter campaign, around 5 of which were demonstrated to the public. Two of these prototypes were made available for purchase as 'development kits', DK1 in late 2012 and DK2 in mid 2014, to give developers a chance to develop content in time for the Rift's release. However, both were also purchased by a large number of enthusiasts who wished to get an early preview of the technology.

Dynamic FAUST: Registering Human Bodies in Motion (CVPR 2017) Bogo, F., Romero, J., Pons-Moll, G., Black, M. J. In IEEE Conf. on Computer Vision and Pattern Recognition (CVPR), July 2017 Abstract: While the ready availability of 3D scan data has influenced research throughout computer vision, less attention has focused on 4D data; that is 3D scans of moving nonrigid objects, captured over time. To be useful for vision research, such 4D scans need to be registered, or aligned, to a common topology. Consequently, extending mesh registration methods to 4D is important. Unfortunately, no ground-truth datasets are available for quantitative evaluation and comparison of 4D registration methods. To address this we create a novel dataset of high-resolution 4D scans of human subjects in motion,...
For a PLD Switches data sheet or to speak to a sales associate, visit PanopticTechnology.com or call 1-866-833-6785! In this edition of Sound Bytes, Steve Gould, CEO of Panoptic Technologies, provides a quick overview of the Panoptic Managed POE Switches which are unique because they, by default, offer full power on all ports – at all times. The switches support the two current standards, 802.3AF and 802.3AT – providing 15 and 30W respectively, and Panoptic offers the newest in ultimate power the “AT ULTRA” with 60W of power on each port. All the switches are sized with Power Supplies that provide the capacity, unlike most brands, of powering each port with the full output, all simultaneously – where, as noted in the video, most competitors will “say” all ports provide POE, but the power ...
The Panoptic Tendency was a piece generated by Mechanism Dance Theatre in 2011-2012. The concept was first introduced by Manuel Macias, an ethnic and womens studies major and cofounder of Mechanism. The work was centered around surveillance, power and control. The panopticon is a circular institutional building, designed by English philosopher Jeremy Bentham, in which inmates are observed by a single entity; that is, a centrally located "inspection house". Due to the omnipresent nature of the observer’s post, inmates would not know whether they were being watched or not. This would then cause the observed to behave as if they were being watched at all times. Drawing upon Michel Foucault's Discipline and Punish, we conceptualized information pertaining to panopticism and self-surveillance i...
panoptic surveillance: a form of monitoring in which the disciplinary mechanism is decentralized, and the observed is constantly the object of information, but never the subject of communication.
Visit PanopticTechnology.com for a data sheet and call 1-866-833-6785 for more information! In this edition of Sound Bytes, Steve Gould, CEO of Panoptic Technologies, provides a quick overview of the Panoptic POE Adapters, which are used to convert from Active POE sources, like Managed POE Switches – to Passive Power over Ethernet. The POE Adapter series come in three categories – the 15W, 30W, and 60W format, each requiring the appropriate power source. The adapters then “step down” the voltage from the standard 48V to the desired format, i.e. 24, 18, 12, 5, etc. and can provide various output formats, for example as a typical Cat5 pinout, or a standard 2.5mm DC power barrel. Steve then gives some quick examples of how these adapters can be used to provide power and control to a variet...

Jacob Silverman's recently-released book TERMS OF SERVICE is a call for social media users to take back ownership of their digital lives. Integrating politics, sociology, pop culture and technology, Silverman explores the surprising conformity at the heart of the digital culture and what it means now that none of us can ever be alone. Reflecting on the implications of the collapsed barriers between our private and public lives, TERMS OF SERVICE explains how social media companies engineer their products to encourage shallow engagement and discourage dissent. Illuminating the new era of connectivity as never before, Silverman brings into focus the inner conflict we feel when deciding what to share and what to “like,” and explains how we can take the steps we need to free ourselves. The Panopticon is a type of institutional building designed by the English philosopher and social theorist Jeremy Bentham in the late 18th century. The concept of the design is to allow a single watchman to observe (-opticon) all (pan-) inmates of an institution without the inmates being able to tell whether or not they are being watched. Although it is physically impossible for the single watchman to observe all cells at once, the fact that the inmates cannot know when they are being watched means that all inmates must act as though they are watched at all times, effectively controlling their own behaviour constantly. The name is also a reference to Panoptes from Greek mythology; he was a giant with a hundred eyes and thus was known to be a very effective watchman. The design consists of ...
Session 1: The Coming of Immediacy Snapchat researcher Nathan Jurgenson is a social theorist and a contributing editor for the New Inquiry. Nathan begins his talk with an exploration of Foucault’s theories and anxieties of the many ‘selves’ and identities we produce, in order to examine the potential ‘trappings of visibility’ we might experience through social media. He addresses ideas of social norms and technology as ‘architectures of power’ and the potential of social media to be a panoptic force. How can we better the embrace ephemerality and playfulness in the design of our social networks, and use this ephemerality to queer the binaries of privacy and visibility, the on and offline? Jurgenson’s view is that the trap isn’t visibility but what we do with that visibility that is the r...

Learning Motion Manifolds with Convolutional Autoencoders, 2015, Holden, Saito, Komura, Joyce We’re going to try to teach two birds with one stone this time. A new machine learning concept and how to apply it to something kinda cool. Autoencoders are a form of unsupervised learning. And these things are a nice, compact way to dip our toes into the unsupervised pool. This paper uses autoencoders to fix motion capture data. What happens if you loose track of a marker for a while? Are you toast? Well... no. Lots of motion capture systems use an understanding of the way a person is built to figure out where that marker has to be given all the rest of the markers. This paper asks, “Can we figure out that understanding automatically?” So cool! Learning Motion Manifolds with Convolutional Auto...

This tutorial will look at how deep learning methods can be applied to problems in computer vision, most notably object recognition. It will start by motivating the need to learn features, rather than hand-craft them. It will then introduce several basic architectures, explaining how they learn features, and showing how they can be "stacked" into hierarchies that can extract multiple layers of representation. Throughout, links will be drawn between these methods and existing approaches to recognition, particularly those involving hierarchical representations. The final part of the lecture will examine the current performances obtained by feature learning approaches on a range of standard vision benchmarks, highlighting their strengths and weaknesses. The tutorial will conclude with a discu...
