Fatma Sultan was an Ottoman princess, daughter of Ahmed III and consort to Grand Vizier Nevşehirli Damat İbrahim Pasha. She is considered to have been politically active and exerted influence on the affairs of state during the late Tulip era (1703–1730).
Biography
At the age of five she was married to Silâhdar Ali Pasha. The paşa symbolically entered her chambers because the bride had not yet reached puberty. In 1713, Silâhdar Ali became Grand Vezir but was unable to exercise his marital rights as in 1716 he perished in the battle at Peterwardein with the Austrians. Hatice Sultan was married very young but, as was tradition with Ottoman princesses, did not live with her husband until several years after the marriage.
She was described as having had a large political influence on both her father, who left the ruling to her husband, and on her husband, the Grand Vizier. Some sources regard her as the real ruler of the later part of the Tulip era. She was said to have assisted the Marquis de Villeneuve, French ambassador to the Ottoman Empire from 1728–1741, in favor of an Ottoman policy benefitting to French interests during the Russo-Austrian-Turkish War (1735–1739). She has been referred to as the last de facto female ruler of the Ottoman Empire. The couple spent several happy and affluent years during the notorious for its splendidness and lavishness Tulip Age (Lâle Devri) which became the symbol of the reign of Ahmed III. The yeniçeri mutiny of Patrona Halil (1730) put an end to the family life of Fatma – the yeniçeris deposed her father, Nevşehirli İbrahim was executed and the family property was confiscated. During her lifetime she founded waqfs in the capital bequeathing mülk properties she had received from her father.

La fontaine du sultan Ahmed III ((tr) III. Ahmet Çeşmesi) est une fontaine de style rococo turc, située sur la grande place devant la Porte Impériale du Palais de Topkapı à Istanbul. Elle a été construite sous le règne d'Ahmed III en 1728, dans le style de la période des tulipes. Elle a servi de lieu de rencontre et de réunion durant la période Ottomane d'Istanbul.
La fontaine est un grand bloc carré couronné par cinq petits dômes. Sur chacune des quatre façades, des niches en forme de mirhab, décorées de bas-reliefs floraux, abritent une fontaine pour boire (çeşme). L'eau est fournie par un bassin octogonal à l'intérieur du kiosque, avec des passages de circulation pour l'entretien. À chaque coin se trouve une sebil à trois grilles (quelqu'un distribuait gratuitement des bols d'eau ou de sharbat à travers l'une des grilles).
Au-dessus des fontaines se trouvent de grands panneaux calligraphiés, entourés de carreaux rouges et bleus. Saliha Sultan (20 April 1715 - 11 October 1778) was an Ottoman princess. She was the daughter of Ottoman Sultan Ahmed III (reigned 1703-30) and his consort Hatem Hanımefendi. She was the half sister of Sultan Mustafa III (reigned 1757-174) and Abdul Hamid I (reigned 1774-89) and the cousin of Sultan Mahmud I (reigned 1730-54) and Osman III (reigned 1754-57).
Saliha Sultan was born as the daughter of Sultan Ahmed III and his consort Hatem Hanımefendi. She is known for marrying several husbands during her lifetime. She had a brother, Șehzade Selim, who died in infancy. At the age of twelve she was married for the first time on 21 October 1727 to Damat Sari Mustafa Pasha, son of Gazi Deli Husein Pasha. They had a son and three daughters before she became a widow by Sari Mustafa Pasha's death in 1732. Saliha was remarried to Damat Ali Pasha on 30 April 1740, and was once again widowed by the death of Ali Pasha in April of 1744. The same year, in December, she married for a third time to Damat Yahya Pasha, son of Mustafa Efendi. Yahya Pasha would once more leave her a widow upon his death in 1757.
On 28 February 1757 she married again, this time to Damat Koca Mehmed Ragıp Pasha, who was an Ottoman statesman that served as Grand Vizier from 1757 to 1763. He was the son of Şevki Mustafa Efendi. Koca Mehmed Ragıp Pasha had been the provincial governor of Egypt from 1744 to 1748, and previously served as a civil servant before 1744 governorship.
The details of the marriage of Saliha Sultan to Koca Mehmed Ragıp Pasha is described by Hammer. At the Koltk (armchair) ceremony, when the bride and groom first meet upon her arrival at his konak, the princess, following the custom, disdained even to look at him and soon retired from the room. The eunuchs immediately removed the bridegroom's shoes and left them at the harem threshold, a ceremony indicating that he was now the master of the harem. Eventually the bridegroom knelt before his bride and awaited her word in silence. Finally she said, "Bring me water." Having presented to her a cup of water while on his knees, he then asked her permission to raise her veil, which was embroidered and ornamented with pearls.
Meanwhile, slaves had brought in two food laden trays, one with roast pigeon and the other with sweets. He offered her food which she imperiously rejected; then, he produced magnificent presents which assuaged her to the extent that he was able to lead her to the table for the ceremony of feeding one another. Later, when the festivities were over, the eunuch Kıslar Ağası led him to her bedroom where he undressed cautiously, so as not to disturb her. He then sank to his knees beside her bed, and kissed her feet. In 1763, she was widowed for the fourth time at his death. In May 1764 she married, for the fifth and last time, Admiral Damat Ağa Mehmed Pashaun and remained his wife until his death in 1771, leaving her widowed until her death in 1778.

Ahmed III
Ahmed III (Ottoman Turkish: احمد ثالث Aḥmed-i sālis) (December 30/31, 1673 – July 1, 1736) was Sultan of the Ottoman Empire and a son of Sultan Mehmed IV (1648–87). His mother was Mâh-Pâre Ummatullah (Emetullah) Râbi'a Gül-Nûş Valide Sultan, originally named Evmania Voria, who was an ethnic Greek. He was born at Hajioglupazari, in Dobruja. He succeeded to the throne in 1703 on the abdication of his brother Mustafa II (1695–1703). Nevşehirli Damat İbrahim Pasha and his daughter, Hatice Sultan (wife of the former) directed the government from 1718 to 1730, a period referred to as the Tulip Era.
Biography
Ahmed III cultivated good relations with France, doubtless in view of Russia's menacing attitude; in fact, both his wives were Frenchwomen. He afforded refuge in Ottoman territory to Charles XII of Sweden (1682–1718) after the Swedish defeat at the hands of Peter I of Russia (1672–1725) in the Battle of Poltava of 1709. In 1710 Charles XII convinced Sultan Ahmed III to declare war against Russia, and the Ottoman forces under Baltacı Mehmet Pasha won a major victory at the Battle of Prut. In the aftermath, Russia returned Azov back to the Ottomans, agreed to demolish the fortress of Taganrog and others in the area, and to stop interfering in the affairs of the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth.

Ahmad, Ahmed or Ahmet are the principal transliterations of an Arabic given name, أحمد.
Etymology
Ahmad comes from the Arabic triconsonantal root of Ḥ-M-D, meaning "highly praised", which in turn implies "one who constantly thanks God." Several Arabic names are derived from this root word.
The name Ahmad has its origins in a prophecy attributed to Jesus, in the Quran in Surah 61: As-Saff (The Ranks). Some Muslim scholars see the names parallel in the word 'Paraclete' in the biblical text. This view is not universal considering translations, meanings and etymology.

Saliha Sultan
Saliha Sultan (fully Daulatlu İsmatlu Saliha Valida Sultan Aliyyetü'ş-şân Hazretleri; c. 1680 – 21 September 1739) was the consort of Ottoman sultan Mustafa II. She was of Greek descent, and was the mother of sultan Mahmud I. She held the title and position of Valide sultan during her son's reign.
Biography
An ethnic Greek, she was born as Alexandra. She was the adoptive daughter of a family living in the Galata neighbourhood of Azapkapı. On 28 September 1730, Patrona Halil with a small group of fellow Janissaries aroused some of the citizens of Constantinople, who opposed the reforms of Ahmed III. Sweeping up more soldiers, the chief rebel Patrona Halil led the riot to the Topkapı Palace, demanded the death of the grand vizier Nevşehirli Damad Ibrahim Pasha, and the abdication of Ahmed III. The sultan acceded to the demands, had Nevşehirli Damat İbrahim Pasha executed, and agreed to the sultanate of his nephew, Mahmud I (1730 – 1754), who replaced him in the throne. As a result of this incident, Mahmud I's mother Saliha became the new Valide Sultan and held the position until her death. She was buried at the Yeni Mosque in Istanbul, inside the tomb of Turhan Hatice, the mother of Sultan Mehmed IV.

Who Is Fatma Sultan (daughter of Ahmed III)
Fatma Sultan was an Ottoman princess, daughter of Ahmed III and consort to Grand Vizier Nevşehirli Damat İbrahim Pasha. She is considered to have been politically active and exerted influence on the affairs of state during the late Tulip era (1703–1730). Biography At the age of five she was married to Silâhdar Ali Pasha. The paşa symbolically entered her chambers because the bride had not yet reached puberty. In 1713, Silâhdar Ali became Grand Vezir but was unable to exercise his marital rights as in 1716 he perished in the battle at Peterwardein with the Austrians. Saliha Sultan (20 April 1715 - 11 October 1778) was an Ottoman princess. She was the daughter of Ottoman Sultan Ahmed III (reigned 1703-30) and his consort Hatem Hanımefendi. She was the half sister of Sultan Mustafa III (reigned 1757-174) and Abdul Hamid I (reigned 1774-89) and the cousin of Sultan Mahmud I (reigned 1730-54) and Osman III (reigned 1754-57). Fatma Sultan was an Ottoman princess, daughter of Ahmed III and consort to Grand Vizier Nevşehirli Damat İbrahim Pasha. She is considered to have been politically active and exerted influence on the affairs of state during the late Tulip era (1703–1730).
Biography
At the age of five she was married to Silâhdar Ali Pasha. The paşa symbolically entered her chambers because the bride had not yet reached puberty. In 1713, Silâhdar Ali became Grand Vezir but was unable to exercise his marital rights as in 1716 he perished in the battle at Peterwardein with the Austrians. Hatice Sultan was married very young but, as was tradition with Ottoman princesses, did not live with her husband until several years after the marriage.
She was described as having had a large political influence on both her father, who left the ruling to her husband, and on her husband, the Grand Vizier. Some sources regard her as the real ruler of the later part of the Tulip era. She was said to have assisted the Marquis de Villeneuve, French ambassador to the Ottoman Empire from 1728–1741, in favor of an Ottoman policy benefitting to French interests during the Russo-Austrian-Turkish War (1735–1739). She has been referred to as the last de facto female ruler of the Ottoman Empire. The couple spent several happy and affluent years during the notorious for its splendidness and lavishness Tulip Age (Lâle Devri) which became the symbol of the reign of Ahmed III. The yeniçeri mutiny of Patrona Halil (1730) put an end to the family life of Fatma – the yeniçeris deposed her father, Nevşehirli İbrahim was executed and the family property was confiscated. During her lifetime she founded waqfs in the capital bequeathing mülk properties she had received from her father.

Koca Mehmed Ragıp Pasha had been the provincial governor of Egypt from 1744 to 1748, and previously served as a civil servant before 1744 governorship.
The details of the marriage of Saliha Sultan to Koca Mehmed Ragıp Pasha is described by Hammer. At the Koltk (armchair) ceremony, when the bride and groom first meet upon her arrival at his konak, the princess, following the custom, disdained even to look at him and soon retired from the room. The eunuchs immediately removed the bridegroom's shoes and left them at the harem threshold, a ceremony indicating that he was now the master of the harem. Eventually the bridegroom knelt before his bride and awaited her word in silence. Finally she said, "Bring me water." Having presented to her a cup of water while on his knees, he then asked her permission to raise her veil, which was embroidered and ornamented with pearls.
Meanwhile, slaves had brought in two food laden trays, one with roast pigeon and the other with sweets. He offered her food which she imperiously rejected; then, he produced magnificent presents which assuaged her to the extent that he was able to lead her to the table for the ceremony of feeding one another. Later, when the festivities were over, the eunuch Kıslar Ağası led him to her bedroom where he undressed cautiously, so as not to disturb her. He then sank to his knees beside her bed, and kissed her feet. In 1763, she was widowed for the fourth time at his death. In May 1764 she married, for the fifth and last time, Admiral Damat Ağa Mehmed Pashaun and remained his wife until his death in 1771, leaving her widowed until her death in 1778.

Who Is Saliha Sultan (daughter of Ahmed III)?
Saliha Sultan (20 April 1715 - 11 October 1778) was an Ottoman princess. She was the daughter of Ottoman Sultan Ahmed III (reigned 1703-30) and his consort Hatem Hanımefendi. She was the half sister of Sultan Mustafa III (reigned 1757-174) and Abdul Hamid I (reigned 1774-89) and the cousin of Sultan Mahmud I (reigned 1730-54) and Osman III (reigned 1754-57). Fatma Sultan was an Ottoman princess, daughter of Ahmed III and consort to Grand Vizier Nevşehirli Damat İbrahim Pasha. She is considered to have been politically active and exerted influence on the affairs of state during the late Tulip era (1703–1730).
Biography
At the age of five she was married to Silâhdar Ali Pasha. The paşa symbolically entered her chambers because the bride had not yet reached puberty. In 1713, Silâhdar Ali became Grand Vezir but was unable to exercise his marital rights as in 1716 he perished in the battle at Peterwardein with the Austrians. Hatice Sultan was married very young but, as was tradition with Ottoman princesses, did not live with her husband until several years after the marriage.
She was described as having had a large political influence on both her father, who left the ruling to her husband, and on her husband, the Grand Vizier. Some sources regard her as the real ruler of the later part of the Tulip era. She was said to have assisted the Marquis de Villeneuve, French ambassador to the Ottoman Empire from 1728–1741, in favor of an Ottoman policy benefitting to French interests during the Russo-Austrian-Turkish War (1735–1739). She has been referred to as the last de facto female ruler of the Ottoman Empire. The couple spent several happy and affluent years during the notorious for its splendidness and lavishness Tulip Age (Lâle Devri) which became the symbol of the reign of Ahmed III. The yeniçeri mutiny of Patrona Halil (1730) put an end to the family life of Fatma – the yeniçeris deposed her father, Nevşehirli İbrahim was executed and the family property was confiscated. During her lifetime she founded waqfs in the capital bequeathing mülk properties she had received from her father.

La fontaine du sultan Ahmed III ((tr) III. Ahmet Çeşmesi) est une fontaine de style rococo turc, située sur la grande place devant la Porte Impériale du Palais de Topkapı à Istanbul. Elle a été construite sous le règne d'Ahmed III en 1728, dans le style de la période des tulipes. Elle a servi de lieu de rencontre et de réunion durant la période Ottomane d'Istanbul.
La fontaine est un grand bloc carré couronné par cinq petits dômes. Sur chacune des quatre façades, des niches en forme de mirhab, décorées de bas-reliefs floraux, abritent une fontaine pour boire (çeşme). L'eau est fournie par un bassin octogonal à l'intérieur du kiosque, avec des passages de circulation pour l'entretien. Koca Mehmed Ragıp Pasha had been the provincial governor of Egypt from 1744 to 1748, and previously served as a civil servant before 1744 governorship.
The details of the marriage of Saliha Sultan to Koca Mehmed Ragıp Pasha is described by Hammer. At the Koltk (armchair) ceremony, when the bride and groom first meet upon her arrival at his konak, the princess, following the custom, disdained even to look at him and soon retired from the room. The eunuchs immediately removed the bridegroom's shoes and left them at the harem threshold, a ceremony indicating that he was now the master of the harem. Eventually the bridegroom knelt before his bride and awaited her word in silence. Finally she said, "Bring me water." Having presented to her a cup of water while on his knees, he then asked her permission to raise her veil, which was embroidered and ornamented with pearls.
Meanwhile, slaves had brought in two food laden trays, one with roast pigeon and the other with sweets. He offered her food which she imperiously rejected; then, he produced magnificent presents which assuaged her to the extent that he was able to lead her to the table for the ceremony of feeding one another. Later, when the festivities were over, the eunuch Kıslar Ağası led him to her bedroom where he undressed cautiously, so as not to disturb her. He then sank to his knees beside her bed, and kissed her feet. In 1763, she was widowed for the fourth time at his death. In May 1764 she married, for the fifth and last time, Admiral Damat Ağa Mehmed Pashaun and remained his wife until his death in 1771, leaving her widowed until her death in 1778.

Patrona Halil (? in Argos Orestikon - November 25, 1730 in Constantinople), was the instigator of a mob uprising in 1730 which replaced Sultan Ahmed III with Mahmud I and ended the Tulip period.
Halil was an Albanian from Macedonia. He became a Janissary and after joining a Janissary rebellion in Niš and leading one in 1720 in Vidin, he moved to the capital. He was known to have engaged in petty trade and crafts like working as a hammam attendant. He spent much of his time at meyhanes (Bar) of Galata. Halil was known as Horpeşteli Arnavut Halil after his place of birth and nationality but his Albanian compatriots called him Patrona (Vice Admiral).
For weeks after the revolt, the empire was in the hands of the insurgents. Patrona Halil rode with the new sultan to the Mosque of Eyub where the ceremony of girding Mahmud I with the Sword of Osman was performed; many of the chief officers were deposed and successors to them appointed at the dictation of the bold rebel who had served in the ranks of the Janissaries and who appeared before the sultan bare-legged and in his old uniform of a common soldier. A Greek butcher, named Yanaki, had formerly given credit to Patrona and had lent him money during the three days of the insurrection. Patrona showed his gratitude by compelling the Divan to make Yanaki Hospodar of Moldavia. Yanaki however never took charge of this office.

Dimitrie Cantemir (Romanian: [diˈmitri.e kanteˈmir]; 1673 -- 1723) was twice Prince of Moldavia (in March--April 1693 and in 1710--1711). He was also a prolific man of letters -- philosopher, historian, composer, musicologist, linguist, ethnographer, and geographer.
His name is spelled Dimitrie Cantemir in Romanian, Dmitriy Konstantinovich Kantemir (Дми́трий Константи́нович Кантеми́р) in Russian, Dimitri Kantemiroğlu in Turkish, Dymitr Kantemir in Polish, Dimitrios Kantemiris (Δημήτριος Καντεμίρης) in Greek and Demetre Cantemir in several other languages.
Musicology

Some of Cantemir's compositions are part of the regular repertory of Turkish music ensembles. In 1999, the Bezmara ensemble have recorded an album, Yitik Sesin Peşinde ("In Search of the Lost Sound") from the Cantemir transcriptions using period instruments.[4]
In 2000, Golden Horn Records released a CD exploring Cantemir's compositions, European composers of Cantemir's era, and folk music of Moldavia. Featuring solo improvisations on kemençe (Turkish bowed fiddle) and tanbur (Turkish long-necked plucked lute) by famed master Íhsan Özgen and early music ensemble Lux Musica directed by Linda Burman-Hall, the project fulfills an ambitious endeavor by Özgen and Burman-Hall to meld early European music styles and instruments with today's Turkish art music styles and instruments, with Cantemir as their touchstone.[5]
In 2009, Alia Vox published a CD and booklet of music performed by the Hespèrion XXI ensemble and invited musicians under the baton of Jordi Savall. The recording and booklet both pertain to "The Book of the Science of Music" by Cantemir and the Sephardic and Armenian musical traditions. Seven of Cantemir's compositions are included in the recording along with other Turkish, Armenian and Sephardic music. [6]
He had around 40 compositions in the Ottoman music of which few are performed today, but his greatest service to the Ottoman music is the fact that he helped survival of 350 instrumental pieces by recording them in a certain notation (the ebced) script he developed in his work Edvar which he presented to Sultan Ahmed III.
