Erdogan said the initiative by the Iraqi Kurdish regional government to hold a referendum on independence at the end of September was wrong and imperil the territorial integrity of Iraq- and that Turkey had conveyed his discontent to the local authorities. He emphatically denied that such a move could insispre a similar drive among Kurds in Turkeyn, saying the country was clearly united and that those who are willing to try know they stand no chance.

On Wednesday leaders of the autonomous Kurdistan Regional Government announced plans to hold the vote in September.
Many Kurds in northern Iraq support the move towards an independent state. But some have their doubts about the timing.

Turkey has the largest Kurdish minority in the region and also has the most complex relationship with the Kurds. This makes Turkey particularly sensitive to the Kurdish issue in the region and the United states and Donald Trumps open backing of the YPG. . Kurds have a long history in Anatolia and It is estimated that around 14 Million Kurds live in Turkey, mostly in the South East of the country.

Kurds
The Kurds (Kurdish: کورد Kurd) are an ethnic group in the Middle East, mostly inhabiting a contiguous area spanning adjacent parts of eastern and southeastern Turkey (Northern Kurdistan), western Iran (Eastern or Iranian Kurdistan), northern Iraq (Southern or Iraqi Kurdistan), and northern Syria (Western Kurdistan or Rojava). The Kurds have ethnically diverse origins. They are culturally and linguistically closely related to the Iranian peoples and, as a result, are often themselves classified as an Iranian people.Kurdish nationalists claim that the Kurds are descended from the Hurrians and the Medes, (the latter being another Iranian people) and the claimed Median descent is reflected in the words of the Kurdish national anthem: "we are the children of the Medes and Kai Khosrow". The Kurdish languages form a subgroup of the Northwestern Iranian languages.
The Kurds are estimated to number, worldwide, around 30–32 million, possibly as high as 37 million, with the majority living in West Asia; however there are significant Kurdish diaspora communities in the cities of western Turkey, in particular Istanbul. A recent Kurdish diaspora has also developed in Western countries, primarily in Germany. The Kurds are the majority population in the autonomous region of Iraqi Kurdistan and in the autonomous region of Rojava, and are a significant minority group in the neighboring countries Turkey and Iran, where Kurdish nationalist movements continue to pursue greater autonomy and cultural rights.

"It's not about religion here. We protect all sects", says a Kurdish soldier. Made up of enclaves across Northern Syria, Rojava, a Marxist PKK affiliate, provides sanctuary to a spectrum of minorities as well as refugees on the run from ISIS. Described by Aldar Xalil, member of the Rojava Government Council, as a "consensus based, democratic way of life", the state enjoys a political liberty unfamiliar to other areas of the Middle East. But an association with the PKK, a Turkish militant group, has earned Rojava members the "terrorist" label . As YPG spokesmen Redur Khalil explains, however, Syria's Kurdish fighters could be key in the fight against ISIS: "for the American and European plans to succeed, they will need allies on the ground".

Many Kurds in northern Iraq support the move towards an independent state. But some have their doubts about the timing.
