T&M and U.K. Subs hand over £4,000 cheque to RNLI
At the U.K. Subs' gig at the 'Talking Heads' music venue in Southampton on Friday 19 May, Time & Matter Recordings and the U.K. Subs made their latest donation to the RNLI, which is Charlie Harper's favourite charity.
The T&M cheque, representing total donations of £4,000 raised since May 2014 via Time & Matter's charity releases, e-Bay auctions as well as Yuko's collections via the band's merchandise desk was handed over to Jez Cronin, the RNLIs Legacy & In Memory Team Co-Ordinator, who is based at the RNLI headquarters in Poole, Dorset.
Time & Matter previously donated £2,000 to the RNLI in April 2014, and you can read that previous news story here.
Jez - who is a massive music fan, has been into punk since 1976, and continues to follow the punk scene and attend all sorts of gigs, of which he has seen the Subs many times - told the T&M website more about his role and what these donations mean for the RNLI:
"My role working as the Legacy & In Memorium Co-Ordinator for the RNLI is dealing with enquiries and offering support to our supporters wishing to leave legacies to the RNLI. These gifts in Wills can vary from cash donations, Residuary of Estates and even specific items being donated to the RNLI. The RNLI has been left gifts as diverse as a Pig Farm, gold teeth and last year two rare Ferraris from the 1960s which raised £8.5 million for the RNLI via auction.
As over 60% of the RNLIs income comes from legacies I really appreciate how generous and unbelievable our supporters are and how important legacies are for the future of the RNLI.
All donations are important, so it was really nice to be able to 'let my hair down' and also enjoy an evening with my favourite punk band the U.K. Subs and at the same time collect a fantastic donation of £4,000 from Charlie and the band in person. The fundraising efforts both financially and personally they have made with Rob and Mark from Time & Matter for the RNLI really is something I cannot thank them enough for on behalf of the RNLI. Of course, the other incredibly important factor to consider is that with Yuko's merchandise desk always having our RNLI Lifeboat donation box on it amongst the Subs merch, and it being carried round so many venues in the UK with the band, this also helps raise awareness of the RNLI.
I was amazed and honoured to personally thank Charlie, Yuko and the band at Talking Heads in Southampton in 2014 for raising over £3,000 for the RNLI at that point in time. So to be able to meet and thank the band again in 2017 at the new Talking Heads venue for this new, latest donation was unbelievable. The efforts Mark, Rob and the U.K. Subs have made over the years for the RNLI is truly humbling.
Then to top it off, after thanking Charlie and the band for their donation, I of course got to see another fantastic gig by the Subs in Mark's company. I know Mark will have passed on my thanks to his fellow T&Mer Rob who was not at the gig and like all of you reading this, I'm once again looking forward to spending many more evenings enjoying the U.K. Subs live and can’t wait for the next gig..."

Cry “Havoc!” and let slip the dogs of war…
They’re back with a bite!
FOUR LUMINARIES OF THE PUNK AND ALTERNATIVE SCENE RE-UNITE FOR A BRAND NEW KILLER LP!
Charlie Harper (U.K. Subs)
Knox (The Vibrators)
Alvin Gibbs (U.K. Subs)
Matthew Best (Psychic TV)
Recorded at ex-Vibrators’ bassist Pat Collier’s London Studio in May 2016, this fi fth Urban Dogs album really is their best yet, featuring a stunning collection of songs that are breathtaking in their variety, both musically and lyrically.
Selected highlights are Charlie’s harmonica-drenched ‘Pawn Shop Special’ and bittersweet ‘Whisky Song’, Knox’s fascinating songwriting skills, encompassing ageing love, crucifi xion and android analogy, two stunning covers; their take on The Monkees and Sex Pistols’ famous cover song ‘Steppin’ Stone’ and Johnny Thunders’ classic ‘You Can’t Put Your Arms Around A Memory’ as well as Alvin’s best ever song yet, the simply sensational punk raucous sweaty-sweet stomper that is ‘Sidewalk Baby’.
All that and we haven’t even barked on about the Knox sung Gibbs homage to Vivienne Westwood - ‘World’s End Apocalypso’ or Alvin’s perfect politician put-down ‘Goddamn Liar’!
Yet more genius to chew on!
Track Listing:
01. Dancing On The Heads Of Snakes
02. The Little Song
03. Sidewalk Baby
04. Pawn Shop Special
05. We Are Machine
06. Trick Or Treat

08. Storm Over Golgotha Tonight
09. You Can’t Put Your Arms Around A Memory
10. World’s End Apocalypso
11. (I’m Not Your) Steppin’ Stone

Brilliant Interview With Charlie In 'Fear & Loathing' Fanzine
You can now read online an absolutely superb interview with Charlie Harper on the 'Fear And Loathing' fanzine website.
Conducted by Andy P, editor and brains behind this ever brilliant fanzine, the interview took place after the soundcheck for the Subs' 100 Club gig on 21 May 2016, a few weeks after the release of the 'Ziezo' album.
Just as this fanzine's superb 2008 Subs interview was (issue 63), this is one of the most infomative and fascinating interviews with Charlie that you will read...
Covering Charlie's early life and musical journey through to the final Subs album and beyond, here are a few example quotes...
"But while we were there, a bomb landed right next to our house, almost a direct hit, and our house collapsed into the harbour..."
"Funnily enough, my Mum and my Aunt actually used to come to the 100 Club to dance to the Jazz bands..."
"...then the Rolling Stones came along. Once I saw them, I was hooked. I loved everything about them and I’d follow them everywhere. I mean, there were times when I’d get to see them three times in a week..."
"I only had a small room, but I painted this big Sixties-style mural on the wall, and added ‘November 17th, 1965’. That was the first time I played music onstage, although at the time I was playing folk music..."
Urban Dogs Album Reviewed by Fear And Loathing 'Zine
The superb brand new album by the Urban Dogs, 'Attack', out now on Time & Matter Records gets yet another superb review on the ever brilliant FEAR AND LOATHING FANZINE website...
"Apart from the fairly recent ‘acoustic’ album, this is the first full-on Urban Dogs album for quite a long time, but it still sounds as confident and natural as a band who were playing and recording on a much regular basis...
It sounds as if the band had a lot of fun making this album. Now it’s your turn to enjoy it!"

Jamie & 'Crew' Charity Skydive For Baby Hospice
U.K. Subs drummer Jamie Oliver is organising a charity skydiving day with his mum and all of the bar staff at the Crew/Queen's Hall music venue in Nuneaton, Warwickshire.
The event will raise money for Zoë's Place, which is a 'local' Baby Hospice based in Coventry.
Zoë's Place is an independent registered Charity providing palliative, respite and end of life care to babies and infants aged from birth to 5 years suffering from life-limiting or life-threatening conditions. Compassionate care is at the heart of Zoë's Place's philosophy and this crucial care is provided to all who access their facilities irrespective of their religious beliefs, colour, race, culture or gender, and there is no charge to the families who use this amazing service.
Jamie, along with ten others will be doing a group skydiving day in March in order to help Zoë's Place open up 2 of their 6 cot rooms which are currently not operating due to lack of funds.
This is an amzing cause to which we hope U.K. Subs fans worldwide can now help by sponsoring Jamie's fundraising plan of action for this incredibly important charity.
Any donation/sponsorship will be gratefully welcomed...
Please get involved by visiting:
www.justgiving.com/fundraising/thecrewbarskydivers
This is what Jamie had to say about the fundraising event...
"On March 2nd (weather permitting) 11 of us will take to the skies and jump out of a perfectly good plane at around 13,000 feet and plummet towards the earth at around 125mph. It must be noted that my nine good friends and my mum have never done this before, so to get all of them on board is pretty damned impressive.
This is a very worthy and noble cause and we would appreciate your support in any way, shape or form. Whatever you can do or spare will be warmly welcomed and will go towards improving the living conditions of many children, many of whom will not make it past infancy.
We have a page at www.justgiving.com/fundraising/thecrewbarskydivers where you can help us to support this most excellent of causes.
Thanks in advance,
Jamie."

Steve Straughan's other bands CDs now in stock at T&M
Ahead of the forthcoming UK winter tour, T&M thought that it would offer Subs fans the chance to purchase some CDs of new guitarist Steve Straughan's previous and side project bands, so you can hear how superb his other work beside the Subs is!
Therefore, we have limited stock now available in the T&M webstore for your convenience and listening pleasure of the following:
LOADED 44: GET READY! CD EP
Loaded 44 are the ass-shakin' punk rock band from the North East of England. Formed in 1996, guitarist-songwriter Dave is joined by Beki (Steve Ignorant's Last Supper European tour 2010) with Steve Straughan and Nelly from The Lurkers.
With a sound that has been compared to "Blondie meets the Ramones", Loaded 44 will blow you away...
>>> GET READY! is their latest CD EP released in August 2016 <<<
"...straight away you’re pulled in by this infectious high tempo buzzsaw guitar punk anthem, this is Loaded 44‘s trademark style and it’s never sounded better..." ThePunkSite.Com
"Loaded 44 are an example of the grassroots DIY attitude at it’s finest, this is an EP that anyone with a love of punk rock should buy..." ThePunkSite.Com
HI-FI SPITFIRES: NIGHTRAID CD ALBUM
Hi -Fi Spitfires are a 3 piece punk rock band, formed in mid 2008, the 'Heart Of A Punk, Soul Of A Rasta' online zine said "Hi-Fi Spitfires... blur somewhere between "Give 'Em Enough Rope" and "Inflammable Material..." Bloody brilliant in other words!
>>> NIGHTRAID is their second CD album released in 2016 <<<
"...their debut album was impressive but Nightraid feels like an altogether more accomplished beast. Hi-Fi Spitfires are unsurprisingly heavily influenced by the likes of Stiff Little Fingers, The Clash and The Ruts, but that’s not to say that they are some dated anachronism, they take their lead from the first wave of punk rock but they have taken it and made it there own, as a result Nightraid is a contemporary slightly harder edged interpretation..." ThePunkSite.Com
"This is a very accomplished album from a band that are grass roots DIY punk rock, that alone would be a reason to support them but forget about that for a moment, just focus on the fact that this is a great album regardless of how it came into being. As long as bands like Hi-Fi Spitfires are keeping the grass roots of punk alive and well then we’ll know our scene is in safe hands..." ThePunkSite.Com

New U.K. Sus DVD Out Now:
'Dance & Travel in the Punk Rock Age with the UK Subs'
Screen Edge, who recently released the U.K. Subs - On The Road DVD, have now released another U.K. Subs DVD.
John Bentham, who is the man behind Screen Edge, also previously issued his footage as 'Jettisoundz', has written the following synopsis for the new DVD, which is entitled 'Dance & Travel in the Punk Rock Age with the U.K. Subs':
"When I started to think about things it was when Charlie told me he was 70 now, and he'd had 50 years on the road already, I thought this sounds like a good story. The beginning few years were captured, and are all out for all to see. I think the story really begins in 1983, which is with Charlie at the helm, stripped of the rest of the band. Then the following year things take off in LA big time, showing what the band can do, and going through the gigs how often the line up changes along the way. For Charlie what does not change is the band, he is always there! There a bit of my own stuff here along with other people's footage, it does make good viewing, particularly some of the interview footage and documentary. I can only hope that these tapes given to me by Charlie Harper, are seen as a testament to a great player. I would say there is another one yet, at least... John Bentham - 2015."
The new DVD compilation - catalogue number JE319D - runs to just over 3 hours and is region free, can be purchased in the UK from Screen Edge on the following link:

U.K. SUBS IN 1977
It's amazing what can turn up after so many years!
Early U.K. Subs drummer Steve J. Jones - who later returned to play on 1983s 'Flood of Lies' LP - sent in this amazing, previously unpublished photo of the Subs, just after Nicky Garratt had joined in early October 1977.
Steve had this to say about this stunning find!
"Here's a picture of the UK Subs from 1977 - playing the Western Counties pub in Paddington. Not sure if it's been published before. I've had a copy in my scrapbook since '77. I'm sure it was one of the first we played after Nicky Garratt joined. We played that particular pub a number of times - often with Rob Harper also in the band. I'm not sure if Rob is with us on this occasion and simply missing from the shot. I've no idea who took the picture..."
T&M contacted Nicky Garratt about the photo and he confirmed for us that the photo was taken on his "...first weekend with the Subs..."

T&M 011: THE TIME & MATTER CAR WINDOW STICKER
The Time & Matter catalogue recently made it in to double figures with our U.K. Subs 2014 calendar, helping to raise £2,000 for the R.N.L.I on the way. So to celebrate this we have produced T&M 011, which is a fabulously fun, limited run, high quality ‘Time & Matter’ Car Window Sticker.
Made from static-cling vinyl so it's easy to fix and easy to remove, the sticker celebrates the artists we've had the pleasure of working with over the last 4 years. Measuring 250mm x 50mm, we hope you agree that this is an essential purchase for any true U.K. Subs fanatic.
So whether you live in your car or if it just sometimes feels that way, you can now brighten things up in your vehicle with this suitably sloganed Subs-sticker; and as usual the proceeds will all go to Charlie's Charitable Cause. Only £2.00 plus P&P.
You can pick up yours via the Time & Matter Recordings Big Cartel webstore HERE!

"People, people, people, get involved. Play your guitar, do your fanzines, take photos BE INVOLVED. One day it could all be worth something because it's not only history but the future too. So live it, don't just be part of the audience, participate."
Charlie Harper, 17 December 1998 - quoted from an interview in Scanner Fanzine Issue 3
"Among the many bands on the bill are some of the veterans of the punk/new wave explosion of the late 1970s including... ...the seemingly indestructible UK Subs. Still fronted by Charlie Harper, who first formed the band as an Elizabethan madrigal quartet sometime in the 1600s, UK Subs were one of the original punk bands from 1976 and are notable not least for the fact of having been through at least 35 drummers in their 35-year history."

" Time don't matter at all..."
1st May 2012: TIME & MATTER IS BACK!
After this U.K. Subs historical archive was hacked and disabled on 12th March 2012, we were forced to move it. WE ARE THEREFORE DELIGHTED TO BE BACK - KEEPING YOU BANG UP TO DATE WITH EVERYTHING TO DO WITH THE U.K. SUBS.
Eternal thanks to both Adam Welsh at Fallen Leaf Design and Chris Boehm at Firebird Information Technology Solutions who salvaged the old site, rebuilt it and are now hosting the new Time & Matter website.
Without their professional, efficient and incredibly friendly service, knowledge and know-how we wouldn't be here today. So if you are having IT / website problems or are looking for a reliable service please show your gratitude for this website's return by utilising their businesses.
Finally, thanks to everyone out there in Subs-land who sent us messages of support and encouragement whilst the website was down. It meant a lot.
Keep spreading the Subs love
